Auto Navigation Systems are for Work, Play, and Everything in Between

Back in the dark ages, it was nearly impossible to navigate the shark-infested waters of Main Street or big city USA without the assistance of a road map or some other major navigational aid. Back then if you found yourself lost you either had to stop and ask for directions at a convenience store along the way or drive along until you found a payphone you could use in order to call for better directions. This process became a little easier once cell phones became prominent and affordable to the masses. Today it has become even better if you can believe it.

Gone are the days when you drove around in circles hoping to find a place to stop and get directions to take you back to the beaten path before your gas tank uses the last of its fumes. Now you can simply use GPS tracking to find out where you are and then get directions to the nearest destination of choice or simply find your way back towards your destination. You can actually go on vacation now without taking a massive road atlas or a half dozen maps of a half dozen states along for the ride. Gone are the days of needing a tour guide in order to fold your maps back into their former positions.

Vacations are now much more relaxed as a result of the lack of stress involved in merely getting there. Not only is getting there easier with the use of auto navigation systems, but getting around once you reach your vacation destination is much easier to handle. This makes the entire vacation experience much more enjoyable to all involved and helps build memories that aren't marred by serious adult conversations about the lack of road signs and a few expletives about the fact that armadillos seem to be the only ones around to ask for directions.

Beyond the vacation factor, business meetings were always a step away from potential disaster before the advent of auto navigation systems that exist to help you find your way in the jungle that has become corporate America. The good and the bad of corporate America is that it isn't only on one coast or another but scattered throughout the country. This means that there are times when you will find it absolutely necessary to take drives in places you may have never considered visiting at any other time in your life. Cornfields, I assure you, begin to blend together and all look alike after a while. Only the most keen of observers can tell at any given time one cornfield from another. This is one of those times when it is almost necessary to have an excellent tool to assist you in navigating throughout the countryside en route to your business destination, particularly if it is in the Midwest.

Many times being late is not an option and being lost in the middle of nowhere is even less of an option. An excellent auto navigation system will help you avoid this possibility all together while also helping you in other instances where weather, road construction, and general traffic delays could cause you to be late for those oh so important meetings.

You will also find that even when your job isn't on the line there are plenty of reasons to make use of your auto navigation system. Work and play aren't the only reasons to make use of systems such as this. Getting to your daughters big day at school or your son's big soccer game even when traffic is snarled to a standstill is another great reason to use this type of technology. In fact, there are situations almost every day in which this technology will prove quite useful if you are of the mind to utilize it. It doesn't really matter what you are using your auto navigation system for as long as you are using it widely and faithfully you are getting your money's worth.

Technogenesis/Integrative Project

...2005). The Auto driver is a creative project that aims at converting a simple human activity, driving a vehicle into a computer technology aided activity. Sharma (2006) notes that humans are intricately bound up with technology. With that in mind, creativity combined with technology can perform a simple task as driving a vehicle. The Auto driver is a technology project to develop a self-driving vehicle. Using GPS (Global positioning system) and other relatively new driving technologies, and combining them into one functional unit able to drive a car. A GPS system currently in use for driving involves indicating available parking spaces (Hsu 2010). Auto driver will take this idea further and use the GPS system to navigate cars through highways and city streets, without getting lost or losing control. By combining technology that is in place, it is possible to develop this car. By use of low cost sensors, the car will be able to recognize other cars in front and behind it while on the road. Similar technology developed by researchers at Rutgers University is helping in parking cars (Joentz 2010). Overview Edmonds et.al. (2005) Point out that the cutting edge in the digital arts is a highly fertile ground for the investigation of creativity and the role of new technologies. In this project, the idea is to research develop a car with an onboard computer system named Auto driver. A system that combines an automated engine to drive the car and an automated navigation system to guide...

...radar plotting system, which can perform radar plotting manually or automatically according to the operators' choice. RADAR Plotting - Modern radar now-a-days are equipped with an electronic plotting feature known as ARPA this feature makes plotting directly on the radar display very convenient and replaced the need for the reflection plotter or plotting sheet. “Principal ARPA System” • Computer based radar system have been used on board naval vessels since the 1950’s but not until the end of the 1960’s did systems for merchant maritime use come onto the market • These systems were well received because of new, more economical technology and good business conditions for shipping. • It is not by chance that the transition from conventional radar to ARPA has been compared to the pre- and post-radar era onboard ships. We can expect some of the same problem as in that first transition if proper and thorough training is not received. • When it works properly, ARPA is a fantastic tool in the hands of a qualified navigator with proper training. In the hands of untrained personnel, it is a dangerous tool, which can add to the cause of collision. • One main requirement for all users of ARPA is to have good knowledge of the principles of manual plotting in order to understand the information given by the instrument. On the same principles, it is necessary to obtain maximum usage of the equipment in a safe and responsible manner. • Since the first computerized radar system was introduced...

Navaids in Aviation

...easily without the help of navigation aides? Navigational aides have been around for almost as long as aircraft have been flying in the skies above us. The first navigation system was composted of just a high intensity-flashing beacon. These beacons were placed on the flight routes that were popularly flown in the mid 1920’s. With more time more of these technologies that help us navigate the world will be even simpler than today. This paper will explain how some navigational aides work and how some of them came into existence. Flight Management Systems Flight management systems are one of the best navaids in commercial aviation. The flight management system (FMS) is made up of four systems in an aircraft, the FMC (flight management computer), the autopilot and flight director, the auto throttle, and the IRS’s. According to Boeing the FMS could be defined as, being capable of four dimensional area navigation (latitude, longitude, altitude, and time), while optimizing performance to achieve the most economical flight possible. The flight management system can give you gross weight of the aircraft, and the best speeds (i.e. holding, approach, climb, cruise, descent, etc…) by taking inputs from the fuel summation unit when it is given the zero fuel weight and the MACTOW (mean aerodynamic cord at takeoff weight). The position of the aircraft can also be determined by referencing the IRS, along with GPS and the radio position updating. Global Positioning Systems GPS is a navigational...

This gives us a good view of what happened in the car and on the road at any given point in time”. An example of the data transformation is when the central locking information is being taken for the use of the vehicle and then conveyed via the cloud back to Volvo. “Through the cloud Volvo is massing large amount of rich data and this is providing them with the opportunity to “turn that resource into something that no only helps build better cars, but also helps the customer have a better experience”.  The real-time system point outs the vehicle’s present location, and displays some or the complete route to a pre-determined destination, depending on the driver’s settings.   Furthermore, if a driver needed...

Auto

...is a mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic system used to guide a vehicle without assistance from a human being. An autopilot can refer specifically to aircraft, self-steering gear for boats, or auto guidance of space craft and missiles. The autopilot of an aircraft is sometimes referred to as "George", after one of the key contributors to its development HISTORY OF AUTOPILOT MECHANISAM: In the early days of aviation, aircraft required the continuous attention of a pilot in order to fly safely. As aircraft range increased allowing flights of many hours, the constant attention led to serious fatigue. An autopilot is designed to perform some of the tasks of the pilot. The first aircraft autopilot was developed by Sperry Corporation in 1912. The autopilot connected a gyroscopic Heading indicator and attitude indicator to hydraulically operated elevators and rudder (ailerons were not connected as wing dihedral was counted upon to produce the necessary roll stability.) It permitted the aircraft to fly straight and level on a compass course without a pilot's attention, greatly reducing the pilot's workload. Lawrence Sperry (the son of famous inventor Elmer Sperry) demonstrated it two years later in 1914 at an aviation safety contest held in Paris. At the contest, Sperry demonstrated the credibility of the invention by flying the aircraft with his hands away from the controls and visible to onlookers of the contest. This autopilot system was also capable of performing take-off and...

...Institute of Management Studies and Research INDIAN AUTO CO’S GREAT CAR CALL BACK – REASONS & IMPACT ON INDIAN ECONOMY Production Management Assignment by Bharat M Patil – MFM 15-18-33 Reasons for Car CALL BACKS…. Every manufacturer need to produce a products that are, safe to use and must achieve all the specifications as specified to customer. This aspects is not only essential to build long-term brand value and corporate success, but it is also required by laws. Every manufacturer develops and implements various robust systems & processes to achieve goal of perfection. However due to some errors which occurs during manufacturing processes, defects occurs. This is very much possible in advanced products such as automobiles. In the event of defects noticed, by taking a responsibility & showing a maturity if action is initiated by manufacturer to fix the issue in favour of the customers, such events are called as CALL BACK. The main reasons for CALL BACKS are, 1. If auto manufacturer discovers safety-related defects, he must initiate some form of CALL BACK to address the problem. e. g. Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL), CALL BACK 64K units of diesel variants of Honda City manufactured from Dec. 2013 to Jul. 2015 to voluntarily replace the fuel return pipe. 2. The product reliability issues aren’t always related with CALL BACK but customer expect the need for CALL BACK for reliability problems also. e. g. navigation system malfunctions would be reliability issue 3. If...

...Deep Space 1 Introduction: Deep space 1 was an extraordinary historic launch with fascinating new discoveries for the innovative world. The successful launch took place on October 24, 1998 and lasted for roughly three years. The objective of the mission was originally an engineering test flight for a dozen new high-risk advanced technologies. Such technologies included SCARLET II, xenon ion engine, solar concentrator array, autonomous navigation plus two other autonomy experiments, small transponder, Ka-band solid state power amplifier, and experiments in low power electronics, power switching, and multifunctional structures. Deep Space 1 also encountered Comet Borrelly and returned the best images and other science data ever from a comet. The Deep Space 1 was the first of a series of technology demonstration probes developed by NASA’s New Millennium Program. Its primary mission was to prove innovative new technologies for future spacecraft. The project manager for Deep Space 1 was Dr. Marc Rayman of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. While the spacecraft accomplished a planetary-class mission, the asteroid encounter was not a required aspect of the mission. The encounter was only a bonus in the primary mission. NASA approved the extended mission to Comet Wilson Harrington in August 1999. Then the spacecraft’s sole star tracker failed in November 1999. A seven-month rescue effort succeeded in recovering the capability to operate the spacecraft without the star tracker, but the...
