Midterm Essay 18OCT15 “The Legality and Morality of Autonomous Drone Strikes” My initial thought when I had heard I would be considering the legal and ethical implications of the use of autonomous drone strikes was that these strikes would be a bad thing. However the articles I have read about this have convinced me otherwise. Not only do these strikes provide a significant tactical advantage for the user but also they are cost efficient. The strikes made by these autonomous drones are allowed within the U.S. law and the Law of War. Additionally there is no moral obligation to limit your fighting power in a war to what your enemy has so there are no moral or ethical issues with these strikes. The use of these drones …show more content…
The use of these drones will help save friendly lives and assist in fighting against the threats that come to our nation. So the only way a person could be against these strikes is if they are unlawful or cause the party who is employing these drones the give up their own morality and ethics. I firmly believe that the use of these autonomous drones is fully legal and will not comprise anyone’s morals or ethics. The pentagon has already stated what they think is a go and what is a no go in the eyes of the law in 2012 before this because an issue of contention. DOD directive 3000.09 states: “Autonomous and semi-autonomous weapon systems shall be designed to allow commanders and operators to exercise appropriate levels of human judgment over the use of force.” This policy gives leniency to those who want to develop a fully autonomous weapon. The only requirement is that the pentagon has to closely supervise the development of any type of weapon. There is one large part of this policy that will help prevent “unintended engagements” or the killing of civilians and other non-combatants. Anyone who directs the operations of semi-autonomous or autonomous weapons are required to use “appropriate care and in accordance with the law of war, applicable treaties, weapon system safety rules and applicable rules of

...intelligent agents, where as an intelligence agent is a system that checks out its environment and takes the necessary actions that maximizes the chances of success(Artificial Intelligence, A.G. Cohn, R. Dechter). Now, this person John McCarthy, who coined the term in 1955, defined it as the science and engineering of making intelligent machines. Artificial intelligence research is very highly technical and specialized, and is deeply divided into sub fields that usually often fail to communicate with each other. Some of the division is due to social and cultural factors meaning that it will or will not function because of our multicultural race. Some sub fields have grown up around particular institutions and the work of individual researchers. Artificial intelligence research is also divided by several technical issues. Some sub fields focus on the solution of specific problems. Others focus on one of several possible approaches or on the use of a particular tool or towards the accomplishment of particular applications(Artificial Intelligence, A.G. Cohn, R. Dechter). The central problems, or goals of AI research include reasoning, knowledge, planning, learning, communication, perception and the ability to move and manipulate objects. Self-Driving Taxis - Uber

...Ana Gordina Application Paper - BUAD 307 April 20, 2015 Self-Driving Taxis (Uber): Secondary Market Research Proposal Description: Self-driving taxis will be provided by Uber and would create an additional type of transportation offered to consumers. These taxis will not require a human driver to be present at the wheel. The car will include the latest technology, including GPS systems and smart traffic control, which will get the customer from point A to point B upon request and with minimal delays. The concept of self-driving cars has become very popular in the recent years. About 10 years ago, people were suspect about the safety and overall feasibility of the self-driving machines, let alone self-driving taxis. Today, as more tech companies, like Google, are coming up with these cars and testing their performance, people become more willing to give up their seat at the wheel (Emarketer). Whenever new technology comes out in the market, marketers manipulate on how a specific customer segment will react to the product. Take for example, personal computers or internet and how nobody could have predicted that these products would become a commodity. Yet, today, people can’t picture living without them. Knowing what are the benefits and costs of the product make it easier to create a marketing plan for the product. Thus, this report will cover the following subtopics: 1. Benefits and costs of self-driving taxis 2. Potential pricing strategies and costs to the...

Vannevar Bush

...Vannevar Bush (/væˈniːvɑr/ van-NEE-var; March 11, 1890 – June 28, 1974) was an American engineer, inventor and science administrator, who during World War II headed the U.S. Office of Scientific Research and Development (OSRD), through which almost all wartime military R&D was carried out, including initiation and early administration of the Manhattan Project. He is also known in engineering for his work on analog computers, for founding Raytheon, and for the memex, a hypothetical adjustable microfilm viewer with a structure analogous to that of hypertext. In 1945, Bush published As We May Think in which he predicted that "wholly new forms of encyclopedias will appear, ready made with a mesh of associative trails running through them, ready to be dropped into the memex and there amplified".[1] The memex influenced generations of computer scientists, who drew inspiration from its vision of the future. For his master's thesis, Bush invented and patented a "profile tracer", a mapping device for assisting surveyors. It was the first of a string of inventions. He joined the Department of Electrical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1919, and founded the company now known as Raytheon in 1922. Starting in 1927, Bush constructed a differential analyzer, an analog computer with some digital components that could solve differential equations with as many as 18 independent variables. An offshoot of the work at MIT by Bush and others was the beginning of digital...

Resource Revolution

...M A R C H 2 014 Are you ready for the resource revolution? Stefan Heck and Matt Rogers Meeting increasing global demand requires dramatically improving resource productivity. Yet technological advances mean companies have an extraordinary opportunity not only to meet that challenge but to spark the next industrial revolution as well. Most cars spend more than 95 percent of their time sitting in garages or parking lots. When in use, the average occupancy per vehicle is well below two people, even though most cars have five seats. Roads are likewise extremely inefficient. Freeways can operate at peak throughput (around 2,000 cars a lane per hour) only when they are less than 10 percent covered by cars. Add more, and congestion lowers speeds and reduces throughput. Most roads reach anything like peak usage only once a day and typically in only one direction. For a visualization of these dynamics, see Exhibit 1. The story is similar for utilities. Just 20 to 40 percent of the transmission and distribution capacity in the United States is in use at a given time, and only about 40 percent of the capacity of power plants. The heat-rate efficiency of the average coal-fired power plant has not significantly improved in more than 50 years—an extreme version of conditions in many industries over the past century. Automotive fuel-efficiency improvement, for example, has consistently lagged behind economy-wide productivity growth. Underutilization and chronic inefficiency cannot...

...17. Disruptive Innovation by Clayton M. Christensen. How to cite in your report.   A disruptive technology or disruptive innovation is an innovation that helps create a new market and value network, and eventually goes on to disrupt an existing market and value network. The term is used in business and technology literature to describe innovations that improve a product or service in ways that the market does not expect. Although the term disruptive technology is widely used, disruptive innovation seems a more appropriate term in many contexts since few technologies are intrinsically disruptive; rather, it is the business model that the technology enables that creates the disruptive impact. The last generation to be unaugmented. The last generation to be intellectually alone. The last generation to be limited by our bodies. We are the first. The first generation to be augmented. The first generation to be intellectually together. The first generation to be limited only by our imaginations. We stand both before and after, balancing on the razor edge of the Event Horizon of the Singularity. That this sublime juxtapositional tautology has gone unnoticed until now is itself remarkable. We're so exquisitely privileged to be living in this time, to be born right on the precipice of the greatest paradigm shift in human history, the only thing that approaches the importance of that reality is finding like minds that realize the same, and being able to make some connection with them. Would that I could, flip the script and get you a hot seat on some fascinating new experience limited only by imagination, but alas we are here making sense of the good old bullshit that is clogging our everyday lives. Whatever you deem to be relevant is directly tied into it. Every topic or endeavour you can think of is covered with a thick armoured wall of bullshit and the few exceptions just affirm the rule. You can pretend it doesn’t exist or write it off as a topic you dislike and subsequently avoid.
