Autumn Leaves Turn Red

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Daylight time and temperature decrease during autumn as a warning for trees –and many other organisms- that winter is coming. Many trees lose their leaves; but before that is done the green color of the leaves turns into yellow, red, and orange. These changes do not happen randomly; behind it there is a transformation of the pigments in leaves.

One of the main pigments in leaves is chlorophyll and it absorbs the red and blue light from sunlight that falls on leaves; hence, the leaves reflect the "green light" and that is why leaves appear to be green. The chlorophyll is part of a bigger structure called chloroplasts. Photosynthesis, a process in which plants transform solar energy into chemical energy, takes place in the chloroplast; furthermore, it is thanks to this chemical energy that plats produce seeds, grow and flower. However, chlorophyll is not a stable compound because sunlight causes it to decompose; hence, plants have to synthesize it continuously. Nevertheless, this "synthesis" requires sunlight and warm temperatures and that is the reason why it is scarce during autumn.

Carotene is another pigment found in plants; it absorbs blue and blue-green light and hence the light reflected from it appears to be yellow. Carotene is found in the chloroplasts of many plants and when it is paired with chlorophyll both absorb many "lights" and therefore the plant looks green. The light carotene absorbs is transferred to chlorophyll which uses it during photosynthesis. This compound is a lot more stable than chlorophyll and it remains in the plant eve after chlorophyll is absent. At this point the plant appears to be yellow.

Anthocyanins is pigment that absorbs blue, blue-green, and green light and the light reflected by it causes for the plant to look RED. Anthocyanins, unlike chlorophyll and carotene, are not attached to the cell membranes but are dissolved in the sap. The pH of the cell's sap influences the color produced by this pigment; for example, under very acidic pH a bright red color is reflected, and under less acidic conditions a purple color is reflected. The red skin of ripe apples and the purple of ripe grapes is caused by the pigment found in anthocyanins. This pigment is produced after a series of reactions between certain proteins and sugars in the cell sap take place.

Why do leaves in trees turn red during autumn?
The conditions during summer are ideal for chlorophyll to synthesized and hence the leaves of trees act as factories producing sugar from water and CO2 after light hits on chlorophyll (the reactions that take place). In trees that contain carotene the color is not green but a bright green (carotene reflects yellow light). The water and many nutrients enter the plant via the roots, then to the branches and finally to the leaves. The CO2 enters through the stomata on the leaves. The sugars –product from photosynthesis- are translated to other parts of the tree were it is used for a variety of purposes (growth) and another portion is stored. HOWEVER…

During autumn the amount of light is reduced (days are shorter) and temperature drops and this causes changes in the tree. One of the things that happens in that a membrane between the branch and leaves of a tree grows and it impedes the flow of nutrients into it; hence, chlorophyll production declines and with it the green color in leaves. If the leaf contained carotene, the leaf would turn yellow. As the concentration of sugar in the leaves decrease, it reacts to form anthocyanins and it is this pigment which turns the leaf red. Trees like red oaks, red maples, and sumac produce this pigment in great amounts and that is why during autumn they display the brightest red and purple colors.

The variety of colors in autumn is greatly influenced by the weather. For example, low temperatures destroy chlorophyll and if the temperature is above 0°C it stimulates the formation of anthocyanins; the same happens with bright sunshine. Furthermore, dry weather increases the sugar concentration in the sap and thus the amount of anthocyanins. In conclusion, the brightest autumn colors are produced in leaves when dry and sunny days are preceded by cool and dry nights.

Amazing Autumn

...Amazing Autumn The most amazing season of the year is autumn, or as most southerners call it fall. Fall is the time of year when football comes on, the leaves change, bonfires are in full swing, and anything pumpkin and apple is selling. The anticipation of all the little trick-or-treaters, and knowing that family will be around in just a few short weeks makes the heart warm from the inside out. Fall brings Thanksgiving, Halloween, and much more, it also starts to bring everyone’s heart out. Everyone has a bigger heart it seems when fall comes and makes it appearance for a few months, after that it leaves one longing for it until it comes back around. Fall is full of wonderful things that make the season what it is. At the beginning of an East Tennessee fall, all which is heard is “Go big orange!’ All people want to see are the mountains’ trees changing from the bright green and dull green colors into reds, oranges, yellows, and some deep purples. The changing of the leaves’ color and the yelling of Tennessee Volunteer fanatics are how one will know the wonderful season fall is upon us. When fall arrives, Starbucks starts to sell pumpkin spice lattes, and Wal-Mart sells pumpkins to carve. Some will start to see women and men drinking the hot and delicious pumpkin spice lattes and children planning what to carve on their pumpkins. With children planning to carve pumpkins, people will start to see the pumpkins with rather menacing, and some humorous, faces carved into them...

Poetry Analysis

...9 August 2010 A Season of Changes In “To Autumn” by John Keats, the narrator uses visual imagery and personification to emphasize autumn’s progression towards winter. By using visual imagery, the narrator captures the season of autumn not only as a time of maturity, abundance, and warmth, but also as a time of death and dying, the cold desolation that becomes winter. The narrator personifies autumn as a woman, allowing the grace and beauty of the season to emanate from the words on the page. Autumn is a season that delights the senses with all of its colorful grandeur, yet autumn is also a season of gray, melancholy days that beg for quiet reflection as winter’s decay invades its existence. Autumn’s passing is gracefully mourned with the knowledge she will return to delight us again the following year. The first stanza uses visual imagery to appeal to the senses of sight and taste. The “seasons of mists and mellow fruitfulness” (1) captures the atmosphere of autumn in England. Autumn is a time for the cool fog that often permeates the morning dew as the sun rises. The richly colored leaves of yellow, orange, and red and the cornucopia of the harvest symbolize the maturation of autumn. An abundance of apples on “mossed cottage-trees” (5), “fruit with ripeness to the core” (6), and “plump...hazel shells” (7) tempt the taste buds with an array of succulence that cannot compare to any other season. Autumn is a time to savor the colors, the crisp morning air, and...

...end. Shakespeare makes use of the lyrical I to express the content and the feeling which are connected to this subject. In the three quatrains there are three prevailing images. In the first one it is the change of seasons, passing times of the days in the second one and in the last quatrain it is the development from fire to ashes. In the first quatrain there are symbols which refer to the change of seasons. "When yellow leaves, ¦.. (l.2) for example symbolizes autumn, "cold and the "bare ruined choirs (l.3/4) refer to winter and " ¦where late the sweet birds sang (l.4) stands for spring and summer. In the last quatrain "glowing (l.9), "fire (l.9) and "ashes (l.10) are part of the prevailing image: a fire which is dying down. Spring/summer, morning/noon and the fire symbolize youth. You are still active, strong and your soul is carefree and not burdened by many memories of things you have lost in your life. Autumn, evening and the glowing of fire refer to becoming/being old. You lose your beauty and your passion, you are not that active anymore and you have a lot of hurting memories of beloved things and persons you have lost. Winter, night and the ashes refer to death. Life is over now and you can not change anything anymore. The couplet at the end has the function of a resume. The lyrical I says that you will love "things more strong...

Nature's Beauty

...Nature is an integral part of our lives. But even while we appreciate the blessings she bestows on us, we forget that we are plundering her treasures and thereby denying our children the pleasure of enjoying nature in all her abundance and variety in the future. The beauty of nature has been extolled in the works of poets and artists. When Wordsworth describes the daffodils dancing in the breeze or when our eyes alight on a painting by William Turner, our hearts are filled with an indescribable emotion. If a mere representation can move us so much, imagine the power of the real thing. If you have seen Massachusetts during fall season when the leaves turn yellow, ochre, and red, you can never forget it in your lifetime. Nature has myriad facets. It keeps changing from season to season, from minute to minute. If the sea was a bright blue in the morning, by noon it has become an emerald green hue. The colors of the sky keep changing throughout the day, from pale pink at dawn to a dazzling blue at mid morning and a bright orange by sunset and purple by twilight. Nature reflects our moods. When the sun shines, we feel happy and hopeful. When the skies cloud over and the rain falls in torrents, we feel pensive. A balmy moonlit night can awaken the lover in us. Such is the transformative power of nature’s beauty. In the movie, ‘The Silence of the Lambs’, the cannibalistic psychiatrist Hannibal Lector who is in a maximum security prison tells Clarice Starling, the FBI officer...

...that moves towards a general/ universal statement throughout the play. The poem is about the inevitability of change and the passing of time. In the poem the main characters are mothers who are now living after the peak of their lives where their only objective is to look after and satisfy their children and husbands. Larkin shows the reader this through the play by using various poetic techniques in each of the stanzas. In stanza one Larkin talks about how the mothers are getting much older and have left their glory days behind them: “summer is fading”. This is metaphorically telling the reader that they are more than half way through their lives as the good years are now fading away and leaving them. They are now fading into autumn which shows that they are getting older. “Young mothers assemble” shows us that the older mothers have now been replaced by these “young mothers” who are still in the peak of their lives or as Larkin would say, their summer. The theme of the inevitability of change and the passing of time is made clear through this stanza, especially in the first line. Larkin shows this as he talks about the seasons being stages in life as there isn’t anything the mothers can do to stop it happening just like someone getting older. He also shows that there is change in the mother’s lives as they have been replaced by younger mothers. In the second stanza Larkin talks about the memories that the mothers have had of the good old days and how that life...

...with all areas of middle Tennessee. For example, I had a job interview in Lebanon, which is a smaller city outside of Hermitage, Tennessee about 30 minutes from Nashville. I wasn’t familiar with the area but had traveled through there on several occasions. I got the address from the receptionist and located the place almost instantly in time for my interview. Tennessee weather is sporadic at best. I can remember one year, it was 60 degrees when I woke up to get the kids ready for school and by 2 o’clock that afternoon, it was snowing. The seasons change very abruptly in Tennessee. It has one long hot spell and one long cold spell. There is not a “fall” or “spring” really. You wake up one day and all the leaves are gone off of the trees and it is very cold outside. Leaves hardly get a chance to turn before falling to the ground. Summertime is the worst season of all in Tennessee. The heat is not real bad, it’s the humidity that that makes you feel miserable if you have to be outside. My family went to a family reunion down there in the middle of July last year. It was at Cedars of Lebanon Park. These policies, legislations, and regulations help to improve existing or developed new effective fall prevention programs based on researches. Therefore, the policies can play a pivotal role in preventing falls and falls-related injuries, and reducing risk for falls among older adults. Some of the legislations that were identified are as follows: Safety of Seniors (SOS) Act of 2007 The Safety of Seniors Act of 2007 is a deferral law, which was introduced to senate on March 17, 2007. Before, the enactment of SOS Act of 2007 there was not any kind of national legislation that focused on falls and falls preventions. Our Great Adventure

...Our Great Adventure Jeanna Zentgraf DeVry University, ENGL 112 Professor Hale March 6, 2011 Our Great Adventure When some friends of ours offered us a piece of property in Tennessee, we jumped at the prospect of moving to the mountains. For us, moving to the Tennessee Mountains was to be a great adventure for my family, but with all of the problems that we would encounter; it turned out to be something that we wanted to forget. We were moving to the mountains to start a family adventure. We were looking forward to being able to see the seasons change with the vivid fall colors and seeing snow for the first time. My son was thrilled about living in the woods and being able to see the wildlife, such as deer, come into our backyard. We just knew we were going to enjoy living in a small town where everyone knows everyone. The town was so small, that it only had 600 residents. This was going to be a new experience to build our new home ourselves, with the help of a contractor. Right from the very beginning we started having problems; we couldn’t seem to get anyone who wanted to work with us. There were so many things to have done that we didn’t even know where to start first. We had to have the land cleared, have a septic system installed, to build a 20 x 20 metal garage and have a well dug. By now with the weather getting colder our tiny camper wasn’t sufficient for the winter, so we decided to order a manufactured home. Since it was starting to get cold...

Scene Narrative

...Task: Write a fictional narrative with one scene The grass beneath his paws was cold, as it was always this time of year. Autumn's refreshing draft of cool air filled the valley, kissing the river in front of the Husky. The shades of orange, red, and brown around him were typical of course, but there was no harm in hoping these colors would not accompany the fall season this year. The feeling of vibrant energy with dull decay had always struck a chord in his chest. "Is this really necessary Jack?" he shouted further down the river bank, glaring down a red fox pawing softly at the river's current. "Calm down pup, this'll only take a minute if I can just lay a paw on a single fish," Jack shot back quickly with obvious frustration stemming from his voice. His fur was already drenched at his previous attempts, but this did not stray him from his persistence. The Husky had already begun lying down on the bank's shore, paying little attention to Jack's assurance of success. He let out a sigh and licked his front paws. He'll never learn, why does my closest friend have to be the only fox around who can't even catch the smallest of fish? The sound of a splash rang out down the bank. He rolled his eyes knowing this couldn't possibly be the sound of a fish having been caught, but the sound of Jack slipping into the stream. Frustrated at the sound of Jack's obvious failure, he stood to his paws once again, bitter his rest was interrupted so soon. The pack had ordered them...

Halloween

...The Halloween Festival Halloween is a time of celebration where people wear costumes and party while in masks every once a year. It is a traditional holiday that takes place in most countries around the world. Halloween’s tradition began in Northern Ireland and Modern Britain, and it has spread to most of the countries all over the world. To some countries, Halloween is a formal holiday while to others it is still an informal break. The popularity of this festival continues to increase year after year. Media outlets such as radio, television, and movies have helped the festival to grow into America’s second largest commercial holiday. This growth contributes to bringing in an estimated revenue of around $6.9 billion dollars annually. Most people spend the day watching horror movies, visiting important attractions, theme parks, and having snacks at Halloween theme restaurants. I interviewed an American citizen who has quite a lot of information concerning other countries and his country’s Halloween parties. His name is Trevor A. Jonathan, and he was born in the year 1976 in California, United States of America. He joined Harvard University in the year 2002 and undertook a Bachelor of Arts in Development Studies where he graduated in the year 2005 and joined the United Nation’s travel team. The days are slower, the sun is hotter, and the air is thick and saccharine like molasses, slowing down the traffic of our thoughts and of our discourse. The season’s circular shoegaze marks for us a lens of the mind with which we are familiar; in our youth and not, between chores and shifts, our minds hang, freely detaching themselves from the surrounding world as they see fit.
