Thus, back then basketball had thirteen rules. The first rule was that the ball was allowed to be thrown in any direction with one or both hands. The basketball could be batted anywhere with only your hands and not a fist. Secondly, an athlete could not run with the ball and must throw it from the spot which he catches it. The ball must be held in the arms or between the hands. Other body parts must not be used for holding the ball. As a matter of fact, there was not allowed to be any shouldering, pushing, striking, holding, or tripping an opponent. If this were to happen it would be a foul and if it happened twice the player would be disqualified until the next point was made, or if there was a deep injury. In addition, no substitutions

Basketball for 30 Days

...“Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game.” This quote is from the best basketball player in the world, Michael Jordan. I kept this quote in my mind while I did my 30 day challenge. It took me many days to think of what to do for my 30 day challenge, I changed my mind many different times. When I finally thought of something that I was actually excited about, I stuck with it and decided to do it. For the 30 days I am going to play basketball every day, so I can try and improve my basketball skills. I am not only going to work on just shooting; I am also going to work on my athletic ability, jumping, passing, leadership, foul shots, and shooting. For the 30 days I will be trying many activities to improve the areas I have just listed. My research question will be: In 30 days can I improve my athletic ability, jumping, passing, leadership, foul shots, and over all shooting? I will try to improve my skills over the next 30 days by doing many things that I have done my research on and found drills and practices. While I try and improve my overall basketball skills I will also improve my overall health but I will not record it because that is not my main goal. Playing basketball for 30 days will not be hard for me because I use to play basketball every day when I was in high school however when I came to Ball State I have maybe played three times all year. I have played basketball for most of my life and I want to get back into the routine. For many people going to the gym and hitting the...

Basketball

...were living in Virginia and my mom put me in my first basketball camp. It was fun to get on the court and practice and play with the other boys. I could not wait to get to practice each day. Some days I was tired and I realized that sometime you have to push yourself and work hard when you are a part of a team. There is no better feeling than after you have worked hard in practice and the coach calls your name to go on the court and play in a game. Touching the ball for the first time makes you nervous but when you hit the first shot the excitement takes over. Since I was a little boy I have watched basketball games with my mom. Seeing how exciting it is and how the fans go crazy when a player makes a basket made me want to become a basketball player when I grow up. I have watched Kobe Bryant play and I have dreamed of being a great player like he is. Kobe works hard and competes with his heart each night. He seems to enjoy his job and I want to enjoy whatever job I choose for my future. I have followed Kobe throughout his career and have his posters and jerseys. I look at them sometime and tell myself that I will be a great player like him someday. I know that it will take a lot of hard work and long practices to become great. I know that I will be forced to train and keep my body in the best condition. Sports are about being physical, athletic, and strong. Physics In Basketball

...Research Question How does the height of dropping a basketball affect the time it bounces? Aim I have played a lot of basketball in my life, however, never before thought about the physics behind the sport. When I was given the opportunity to plan and prepare my own investigation, I tried to seize the chance as much as possible by combining it with my hobby. I was curious if this experiment would give me new knowledge and improve my skills, or just confirm the information I have already gained during basketball practice. Background information That most balls bounces are something we learn from an early age, but why is that a universal phenomenon, why doesn’t the ball just stay on the ground when dropped? Physics, and especially the field...

College Athletics

...College Athlete Compensation: Primary Research Review Phillip Richard Cross Oakland University Rochester, MI Abstract This primary research paper explores the topic of college athletics, and if student athletes receive fair compensation for their sporting services. As to how this question was answered, it was conducted with two separate interviews. One of them was with Ben Anderson, my former varsity basketball coach, and also Matt Okaiye, a close friend who plays college football at Michigan State. The main findings of this research was that college athletes receive a great deal of fair compensation, as scholarships and publicity are the primary focus to why. For athletic scholarships, we see that the student athletes receive numerous amnesties and benefits that compensate them extremely well. Publicity is the same way, as the athletes have a large amount of attention on them which leads to economic and compensated value. This research will ultimately lead to the final project which will be on the argument that college athletes should not be paid. College Athlete Compensation The notion of paying college athletes has been an ongoing debate for decades. With college sports continuing to gain popularity and revenue increasing for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), people have questioned whether college athletes should be benefited beyond their athletic scholarships. The question is, do college athletes receive fair enough compensation for their services...

...Austin Lawton 6/17/14 English 101 “Austin Lawton goes for the shot and hits. Oh no, he seems to be hurt. This is a horrific scene.” What if this is said? What if basketball isn’t there for me anymore? What will I fall back on? That is why I plan to get my degree in computer engineering. If basketball doesn’t work out, my fall back plan will be put to use using my degree. I’ve been around computers for as long as I can remember. My mom was a middle school principal so she was a little computer savvy. We had a computer and she used to put me on the internet and let me play games. When I got done playing the games I tended to roam around the computer. Not knowing that while I’m doing so it helped me get comfortable with a computer. I used to explore the settings, the internet, and almost any program my mom had on the computer. In elementary school I got enrolled in a summer program that was dealing with computers. We made PowerPoints, typed papers in Microsoft Word, and even searched the web. This is when I got interested in computers and felt like I knew everything I could about computers. Oh was I wrong, this was nothing but it was pretty impressive that a kid of my age was so advanced. My mom eventually got a new computer and needed help hooking it up. It was funny because she went to use the bathroom before we started. Me being impatient and curious, I wondered if I could hook it up by myself. So I tried and surprisingly I hooked the whole computer up before my mom could...

Rlat Task 5

...University Insufficient Sleep: The Silent Enemy of Fitness 2 It can be seen on television, read in the paper, and heard on the radio that it's time for America to get into shape. Obesity is up and engaging in healthy exercise is down. The obvious thing to blame is poor food choices and if that's coupled with working long hours then it's no wonder. Nevertheless, despite those issues people are finally deciding to make fitness a priority in their lives by watching what they eat and exercising more. However, they may find that the weight's not coming off, physical performance is going down, or they can't seem to put on any muscle. The culprit behind these issues may be surprising: sleep. A lack of sleep, which is becoming the norm in our society, is being proven to negatively effect several key areas of one's physical fitness. First, studies show a connection between sleep deprivation and weight control including less fat loss, changes in metabolism, and increased hunger. Next, research conducted on sleep restricted athletes resulted in less stamina, slower reaction times, and changes in mood. Finally, tests on sleep deprived subjects showed lowered testosterone, growth hormone (GH), and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels which all play major roles in building muscle. Getting enough sleep every night is more important to your fitness than you may think. Research suggests that an inadequate amount of sleep is detrimental to weight control, physical performance...

Crossfit

...Abstract In this paper, I will explain what CrossFit Training is and what the benefits are compared to a typical exercise program of isolated muscular training combined with a cardio workout. I will also examine the impacts that CrossFit Training has had on college athletes and athletic teams as a whole at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford (UPB). I will look into what teams have the most athletes with experience with CrossFit training, how many UPB athletes have used it on their own time or during the offseason, and the general feeling towards CrossFit Training and its effectiveness in improving fitness. Introduction In the physical fitness realm, there are many different kinds of exercise programs. There are programs that focus on dancing, ones that focus on stretching, and ones that focus on core strength and conditioning. CrossFit Training is an example of a core strength and conditioning program. It was developed to enhance an individual’s overall ability to complete physical tasks by incorporating many different forms of exercise, from gymnastics to weightlifting (Glassman, 2002). CrossFit Training is different from the popularly accepted idea of a workout because it’s not just situps, curls, leg press, and a half an hour of cardio. CrossFit is all about combining movements and shorter, high intensity cardiovascular sessions (Glassman, 2002). For every long distance effort, a CrossFit athlete will do five or six at a short distance. This is implemented...

Critical Thinking

...personality and social responsibility was believed can and should be taught and learned in a sport and physical activity setting (Omar-Fauzee, 2012). An active involvement in sports can help individuals to learn skills, sportsmanship, strategies, commitment, respect and disciplines. In sports, while training hard mentally and physically, the traits referenced above reflect heavily upon the developmental process of having good character. Given an in depth analysis on why participating in team sports helps to develop good character, the strategies of these traits will be suggested throughout this paper. If you take great athletes such as Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant, these basketball players had to prepare themselves mentally and physically before every game that they have played and by displaying self determination and discipline they were able to lead their teams to multiple National Basketball Association (NBA) Championships. Without good leadership qualities and good character, you cannot play a role of this magnitude and go the distance with fellow teammates and expect them to trust you merely off of skill alone. Being skillful or labeled the best at any sport won’t earn you your teammates trust, but to show that you are committed in making players around you better is a winning attitude that will give them that same drive, determination, and...

Essay On Job Shadowing

...For my career development research project I decided to shadow Candice Jackson (College of Charleston Women’s Basketball Head Coach), Amanda Taylor (Athletic Trainer for Women’s Basketball at the College of Charleston), and Marc Pronto (Strength and Conditioning Coach for both Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams at the College of Charleston). I selected job shadowing because it is a very useful activity that allows a person to explore a career that they are interested in by spending time with a professional working in that field. It provided me more insight rather than just reading a job description or even asking an employee to describe what they do. While job shadowing, I was able to ask questions and experience the trials, triumphs, and normal day-to-day activities that Marc Pronto, Candice Jackson, and Amanda Taylor might experience while working in their jobs. I was able to experience how the professional approaches the job, the necessary social cooperation, standard operating procedures, and the tools that I need in order to perform the job successfully. Normally, job shadowing usually lasts only a day, but in...

The Japanese were allotted a few days to pack whatever they could and bring it with them. Many families had to sell off their homes, businesses and their belongings at a much lower price they had purchased it for. Team Work , Collaboration and Conflict Resolutions

...21st Century Reflection Paper Team Work, Collaboration, and Conflict Resolution My experiences working with teams have varied. I have worked on group projects for school, and with teams at different jobs. While I was working on a school PowerPoint group project presentation, team work was important. Our group met to discuss what information we would need on the presentation. Next we choose who could do best on what part. When I was younger I worked as a manager at a fast food restaurant. When preparing fast food, team work and great communication were a must. Without effective team work it’s easy to fall behind. All persons on the shift had a job to do, be it cashier, cook, or filler bagger. These jobs working together insured a productive day. My experiences working with teams have been positive because I was able to learn from them. I learned how to talk to people with respect. On my present job I am a car sales consultant. In the auto sales business you have sales consultants, sales managers, and credit/finance specialist. There is also advertising to bring in customers. We all work as a team to move from one step to the next. The customer comes in looks around with a sales consultant. Once the customer picks out a car the sales consultant or sales manger completes the initial paper work. The finance specialist reviews how the car will be purchase and what type of credit or finance may be needed. Teams are...
