“This is definitely your worst idea ever”,
“Just trust me Bryan,” said Chris.
“You’ve almost got me killed so many times, why should I trust you?”
“Because this one is different”
“How?’, asked Bryan.
“This will be completely life changing. Don’t you want something different?”
“Not really, I think we are fine here.”
At that moment Chris walked through the door with three backpacks John had instructed him to get. Inside the backpacks were food, water, and flashlights in case their plan went poorly. “Alright we are ready to go, are you in or not?”, John asked Bryan.
Bryan nervously scratched his blue ball cap. He was wearing his usual jeans and sweatshirt. He always felt pressured into bad situations by John and Chris, despite being much taller …show more content…
John had recently read an article describing how traveling at the speed of light could slow down time for those onboard. This would mean that when they returned it would be a much later year but they would still be young. Hearing this peaked John’s curiosity and he wanted to try it out himself. He was also able to find out where the rocket was being held. His idea was to steal his Dad’s badge and use it to get into NASA’s headquarters. He had been there many times before and he knew the layout very well. He knew once he got into the room there would be a backdoor to let Chris and Bryan in. He would then use his Dad’s badge to get into the controls room to retract the roof then get into the …show more content…
I’m basically a pro”, John commented back.
“But you’re not”, remarked Bryan.
“Come on man you're thinking too far into it, just live life and quit worrying”, Chris added. After a long argument Chris and John eventually convinced Bryan to get in the car and go with them. They arrived at NASA headquarters and everything went as planned. John was able to get to the room using his Dad’s badge, where just as he remembered there was a backdoor and he was able to let in Chris and Bryan.
After letting them in John went to the control room door and scanned the badge. He searched for thirty minutes through the sea of buttons until finally he found the one that opened the retractable roof. The three of them strapped themselves into the rocket. To the surprise of Bryan and delight of John the rocket was just like the simulations that John had experienced.
“5...4...3...2...1”, said John excitedly.
“No don’t, it’s not too late to go back now”, exclaimed Bryan.
“Calm down everything is going to be fine. Once we come back to earth we will get to live a new life, everything will be great. Technology will be much more advanced. We will have a better life, I promise.”, said Chris trying to reassure

PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...

...‘ THE BUSINESS OF MASS MEDIA Advertising and Commercial Culture 345 Early Developments in American Advertising 351 The Shape of U.S. Advertising Today 359 Persuasive Techniques in Contemporary Advertising 366 Commercial Speech and Regulating Advertising 374 Advertising, Politics, and Democracy Back in 1993, the trade magazine Adweek wrote about “The Ultimate Network”— something called the Internet: “Advertisers and agencies take note: It has the potential to become the next great mass/personal medium.”1 The prediction was correct, if not understated. The Internet has become a huge medium for advertisers, targeting audiences more precisely than any medium before it. Yet, none of the venerable ad agencies at that time could have guessed that an Internet start-up—Google— would become bigger than the leading multinational advertising holding companies like Omnicom, WPP, Interpublic, and Publicis. Nearly 99 percent of Google’s $16.6 billion revenue in 2007 came from advertising. THE BUSINESS OF MASS MEDIA B 343 ‘ ADVERTISING However, Google is different from the Madison Avenue agencies. It doesn’t design witty, slick ad campaigns. Instead, it facilitates the dull but effective text-based sponsored links that appear in Google searches or on affiliated sites. “We are in the really boring part of the business…the boring big business,” Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt says.2 What Google’s ads lack in creativity, they make up in precision. Google’s AdWords advertising...

For Isabella and Calista Stone When you are eighty years old, and in a quiet moment of reflection narrating for only yourself the most personal version of your life story, the telling that will be most compact and meaningful will be the series of choices you have made. In the end, we are our choices. —Jeff Bezos, commencement speech at Princeton University, May 30, 2010 Prologue In the early 1970s, an industrious advertising executive named Julie Ray became fascinated with an unconventional public-school program for gifted children in Houston, Texas. Her son was among the first students enrolled in what would later be called the Vanguard program, which stoked creativity and independence in its students and nurtured expansive, outside-the-box thinking. Ray grew so enamored with the curriculum and the community of enthusiastic teachers and parents that she set out to research similar schools around the state with an eye toward writing a book about...

Cooperative Learning       "Cooperative learning is the instructional use of small groups so that students         work together to maximize their own and each other's learning." WHAT IS IT? Cooperative learning is a successful teaching strategy in which small teams, each with students of different levels of ability, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject. Each member of a team is responsible not only for learning what is taught but also for helping teammates learn, thus creating an atmosphere of achievement. WHY USE IT? Documented results include improved academic achievement, improved behavior and attendance, increased self-confidence and motivation, and increased liking of school and classmates. Cooperative learning is also relatively easy to implement and is inexpensive. HOW DOES IT WORK? Here are some typical strategies that can be used with any subject, in almost any grade, and without a special curriculum: Group Investigations are structured to emphasize higher-order thinking skills such as analysis and evaluation. Students work to produce a group project, which they may have a hand...

An FBI agent examines a potentially contaminated letter during a white powder training exercise. 2012 The FBI Story I A Message from FBI Director Robert S. Mueller, III For the FBI and its partners, 2012 was a year that reminded us once again of the seriousness of the security threats facing our nation. During the year, extremists plotted to attack—unsuccessfully, thanks to the work of our Joint Terrorism Task Forces—the U.S. Capitol, the New York Federal Reserve Bank, and other landmarks on U.S. soil. Tragically, on the 11th anniversary of 9/11, a hateful attack in Benghazi took the lives of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya and three other Americans. In the cyber realm, a rising tide of hackers took electronic aim at global cyber infrastructure, causing untold damages. High-dollar white-collar crimes of all kinds also continued to siphon significant sums from the pocketbooks of consumers. And in Newtown, Connecticut, 20 young children and six adults lost their lives in one of the worst mass shootings in American history, ending a year of violence that saw similar tragedies around the country. Working with its colleagues around the globe, the FBI is committed to taking a leadership role in protecting the nation. As you can see from...
