Bad Eating Habits

...have a few bad eating habits, whether it be munching on a bag of potato chips when you talk on the phone or scarfing down a doughnut during break time at work. You may think that it's the taste of that chocolate doughnut that keeps your hand dipping into the doughnut box. Not necessarily so. Surprisingly, some bad eating habits persist even when food tastes bad. Bad Eating Habits Persist Even When Food Tastes Bad Researchers gave groups of people attending a movie a bucket of freshly popped popcorn or a container of stale popcorn to munch on during the show. Moviegoers who didn't regularly go to the movies ate very little of the stale popcorn because they didn't like the taste. On the other hand, those who regularly purchased popcorn at the movies ate the same amount of the crunchy snack whether it was freshly popped or stale. The habit of eating popcorn at the movies was so firmly ingrained they ate it even when it didn't taste good. Even a stale, flavorless bag of popcorn wasn't enough to change their eating habits. This study suggests that once you've formed a bad eating habit, it's likely to persist even when the experience is no longer pleasurable. Outside environmental cues such as being in a movie theater or talking on the phone can be a trigger for some eating behaviors, even more so than the taste of the food itself. How many times have you found yourself mindless munching on something without really tasting it? These automatic eating habits can become...

...wrench into your body's works. For example, studies show that a sleep debt lowers levels of the hormone leptin, which helps keep your appetite under control. Implication: Sleep too little, and there's a good chance you'll be soon overeating. Sleep deprivation also boosts levels of stress hormones, which prompt your body to send more glucose into your bloodstream. Too little sleep also makes your body less sensitive to insulin.  But that's just the beginning. Research shows that sleeping too little shuts down production of certain chemicals in the immune system that defend your body against germs. Shortchange yourself on shut-eye and you may want to have a box of tissues and cough medicine handy: A 2009 study found that people who sleep less than seven hours a night are up to three times more likely to develop a cold.  Other studies show that even modest sleep deprivation - cutting back from your usual eight hours a night to six hours, for instance - can turn up levels of chronic inflammation, which increases the risk for many conditions, including heart attacks, strokes, and osteoporosis.  Then, there are the immediate effects. When the alarm clock blares you out of a deep sleep, you're apt to start the day in a sour mood. As the day passes, you're also likely to feel dull witted and foggy. Some neurologists believe that one purpose of sleep is to give your brain a chance to build and strengthen the wiring between neurons. Studies show that well-rested people learn......

How to Break Bad Habits

...Bad habits interrupt your life and prevent you from accomplishing your goals. They jeopardize your health — both mentally and physically. And they waste your time and energy. So why do we still do them? And most importantly, is there anything you can do about it? I’ve previously written about the science of how habits start, so now let’s focus on the practice of making changes in the real world. How can you delete your bad behaviors and stick to good ones instead? I certainly don’t have all of the answers, but keep reading and I’ll share what I’ve learned about how to break a bad habit. What causes bad habits? Most of your bad habits are caused by two things… Stress and boredom. Most of the time, bad habits are simply a way of dealing with stress and boredom. Everything from biting your nails to overspending on a shopping spree to drinking every weekend to wasting time on the internet can be a simple response to stress and boredom. But it doesn’t have to be that way. You can teach yourself new and healthy ways to deal with stress and boredom, which you can then substitute in place of your bad habits. Of course, sometimes the stress or boredom that is on the surface is actually caused by deeper issues. These issues can be tough to think about, but if you’re serious about making changes then you have to be honest with yourself. Are there certain beliefs or reasons that are behind the bad habit? Is there something deeper — a fear, an event, or a......

The Bad Habit

...The Bad Habit The early years of my life consisted of not being very productive. Many of the kids around my age were reading books or even studying for big test during the school year. I, however, was focusing on mastering video games or doing physical activities such as play a pickup game of football or basketball. This is why I sometimes struggle with understanding a book or taking a test. When I was around the age of 10, a new video game came out, making me very excited. All I could think about was how great it would be to have it. The game was a football game called Madden NFL 2006, and not a day went by without me thinking about playing it. My mother was very supportive of me throughout my childhood years and often asked me what I wanted for my birthdays and Christmas. When the question came out, “What would you like for your birthday”, I knew exactly what to say. Without hesitating I told her Madden NFL 2006. Looking back now I should have asked for a more interesting product, such as a dirt bike, but being ridiculous, I choose this game instead. Once I received it, I couldn’t wait to play it, not even the birthday cake or the homemade ice cream my aunt made could stop me. Taking the plastic off of the case was the biggest problem; I mean it was like the producers wanted you to struggle before you experienced the greatness. After I had taken the plastic off, I slipped the game in the system and explored through the many new features of the game. ......

Good Habit, Bad Habit

...Taylor Daily U0677774 11/04/14 Article #3 “Good Habits, Bad Habits” The article I choose to read researched the neurological effects of habits on our brain and if it was possible to change our habits. We all struggle with habits that make us less productive or less efficient but that said we also have many habits (actions we don’t think about) that help us get through a day without wasting time with extra thinking. It is interesting from the article that our brain can make habits but cannot seem to forget them. They are stored even when not being used for a later date and time when needed. Our brains are working and thinking even if we aren’t aware of it. In the Infralimbic cortex of our brain, habits are stored and the actions that go along with them. That part of our brain is active when we go pour a bowl of cereal, or make a cup of coffee in the morning. It is the same routine and our brain isn’t wasting time or energy thinking about things we do everyday, these routines are habits. From an evolutionary standpoint it makes sense that our brains would create habits to help us only focus on the most important parts of the day, and let us focus of figuring out how to stay alive. It comes in handy in a tight situation to not have to think when a quick decision is demanded. Brains in humans and animals have habits that are stored for our safety and helping us get by day to day. A good example of a habit most people learn is driving a car. There is a lot of thinking......

...better academically than their counterparts, who are neither disciplined nor focused on their studies. There are several bad habits which may hinder children from performing at their optimal level. They include: Procrastination Putting off homework and projects for the last minute may seem to be a good idea for some children, but it does adversely affect the outcome of their academic performance. Waiting until the last minute to do assignments increases the possibility of making more errors and submitting a mediocre paper. Excellent papers and projects go through several drafts and editing; rarely are they completed in one draft. Encourage your children to develop a schedule for studying and working on assignments, and help them to stick to it.
