Being an American

I am proud to be an American because of the many brave men and women we have in our armed forces ready and willing to fight for our freedom at any time, against any opposing force. We as Americans exemplify courage. We work together in hardships; whether it being a natural disaster, a terrorist attack or our own fellow Americans fault in damaging the United States economy. We work as one. Especially in any branch of the armed forces they continually cooperative with one another all are striving for one goal, to protect our freedom. This struggle has been ongoing since America’s forefathers first sat down to write the Declaration of Independence in order to break free from the hands of the smothering British rule. They all understood that freedom would never come free. They knew there would be a never-ending battle for what they desired. And the Constitution states that we will always be in fight as one because of the first 3 words written, “We the people…” One American who illustrated the most courageous acts in the middle in distress and confrontation was General Patton. Even though he was not the most appropriate with his choice of words at times, he showed his courage with his persistence of pushing the horrible Germany Nazi army line further and further into a corner of Europe and saved us from the dictatorship of Adolf Hitler. With his audacity and vicious mentality made it perfect for him to inspire the troops he lead with grace yet fierceness into battle to shelter our freedom, and his freedom of speech. Even the forces who are stationed here at home in the United States demonstrate their courage. Some by diving into ground zero at the 9/11 attack while others were running away. The brave firemen and New York police department rumbling through broken glass, fractured steel poles, and ashes from the building burning down looking for survivors; they never gave up hope even if they discover only one survivor all day, they sprinted toward the maybe goal on finding them. And recently, the brave woman and man who lunged at and took down the shooter at the Fort Hood base showed how far they would go in order to save lives. She unselfishly put her own life on the line of fire in order for the possibility of stopping one or fifteen more people being shot and killed. All of the brave men and women today who are now fighting against terrorist in Iran and Iraq, attempting to maintain the peace and assist the government there to establish a new way of working situations out without gun fire or dictatorship. Though not all Americans are supporting the reasons of those men and women being there we all stand together and pray for their health and safety so they may return back home to us. Through all of the horrible situations thrown at us, we together as Americans have stood united and stayed true to our morals and beliefs that every person has the right to at least attempt at the opportunity of pursuing life, liberty, and happiness. The United States armed forces include the Marines, Navy, Coast Guard, Army, Army Reserves, and etc. with different names and titles all contain the same courage and prove it by fighting to maintain our freedom daily. In honor of each and every one of their bravery in the face of battle we as a country founded Armistice Day, Veteran’s Day, in appreciation of their dedication to the protection of freedom.

Love Is Never Silent

...Ballin Believes Sign Language should be a universal Language for anyone to grasp and obtain. He believes the barrier between the deaf community and hearing is a lack of communication. He has a very specific way conveying the education of the deaf. He Prompts the teaching of Sign Language rather than the techniques of teaching the deaf to speak and learn to read lips. Throughout the first few chapters, I've noticed how far the deaf culture has grown. People have accepted the culture and learned to communicate by using Sign Language. Ballin’s ideas still apply to the Deaf Community today. Sign Language, which is Ballin’s preferred method of communication, is valued far over the usual practices of teaching to read lips and speak using their vocal chords. Today, technology has been modified making communication easier. In one part of the book, Ballin Recounts an argument he had with Alexander Graham Bell and his interest in the field of motion pictures. This is one example of technology being modified and communication barriers...

The Pros And Cons Of Nazi Medical Experiments

...Despite the unethical nature and questionable scientific validity of the nazi medical experiments, the results should still be accessible for scientific gain. During the Holocaust the medical experiments that were conducted were unethical. One reason being is that, the scientists hired to conduct the various medical experiments made an oath in the beginning of their career. This was called the Hippocratic oath, arguably the most important parts of the medical profession. At the time of graduation, doctors recite this oath as a promise of what they will give back to the practice of medicine. One particular part of the oath that the doctors have to recite is that “[they] will use treatment to help the sick accordingly to [their] ability and judgement, but never with a view to injury or wrongdoing” (The Hippocratic 1). By conducting horrific experiments such as internal irrigation where “the frozen victim would have water heated to a near blistering temperature forcefully irrigated into the stomach, bladder, and intestines” (Medical 1), the doctors violated the trust placed in them by the medical profession and humanity, making their data unethical. Also, the people chosen to be test subjects were treated no more than objects at the doctor’s disposal. Eva Kor, a Holocaust survivor, states that her among thousands of others were “being treated like human guinea pigs” (I was 1). The Nazis dehumanized them by constantly treating like animals. In a different interview Eva Kor...

Jay Z Paper

...Michael Boulos Mrs. Matson Imaginative Literature October 11, 2013 Letters to the Government The song “Open Letter” by Jay-Z is a response to the criticism he has been faced with on his recent trip to Cuba. He released this song within 24 hours after the uproar of government officials. Jay-Z talks about political issues that are occurring today and tries turn the criticism on them by pointing out economic flaws. He also mocks the government by saying that he is above them because of the amount of money that he generates. The overwhelming theme in this song is his message of being untouchable to government and how he is above the law. Jay-Z talks about his invincibility because of his ties with the President Obama. Jay-Z starts his first verse with “I done turned Havana to Atlanta.” This is referencing his recent trip to Havana the capital of Cuba. He is implying that he walks the streets of Cuba the same way he does in Atlanta with confidence and a sense of control. Jay-Z does this calmly even though it is illegal for Americans to visit Cuba. He totally disregards government laws and visits anyway because he knows the consequences won’t be too harsh. This is because he has such a close connection with President Obama and thinks he will not be incarcerated for his crime. Jay-Z is also trying to make a statement that he can do whatever he wants no matter what the law says. Jay-Z is a multimillion dollar man and can afford to go anywhere in the world no matter the cost...

African American Dance History

...At the point when blacks were continuously moving, starting with one area then onto the next, one of their first acts was to discover a juke joint and display the new dance steps they had gotten the hang of amid their ventures. “Dances like the Charleston, ballin' the jack, and the jitterbug came of age under the fleet-footed theatrics of average social dancers at house parties. Adding a spin here and a dip there, these social dances would reinvent themselves consistently and effortlessly into "new" dances that everyone was certain they had seen somewhere before.” (¶ 10. The History of Black Dance in America). More and more of the current acception of dance was being constructed by African Americans as they brought their talents and ideas to new places in America. Their concepts and movements were fresh and new so they were easily adopted and able to be transformed into many more possibilities. By the creation of these different dances, American culture was able to progress and devise new notations...

DNA Ligase: Annotated Bibliography

... Lig1 null mutants can even repopulate hematopoietic systems after receiving lethal doses of radiation. On the other hand, Lig1 null mutations are fatal to embryos as they fail to switch erythropoiesis from yolk to liver. DNA ligase I also plays a significant role in V(D)J recombination. These experiments suggest that it may fill a niche within eukaryotic cells, ligating DNA in certain events where there is high demand on repair mechanisms. Its quantitative role in situations with rapid DNA replication and cell division are supported by the fact that when enough Lig1 null fetal liver cells are transplanted, they can repopulate the hematopoietic system as effectively as the normal amount of non-mutant liver cells. Chen, Xi, Jeff D Ballin, Julie Della-Maria, et al. 2009. Distinct kinetics of human DNA ligases I, IIIα, IIIβ, and IV reveal direct DNA sensing ability and differential physiological functions in DNA repair. DNA repair 8: 961-968. There are three human genes that encode DNA ligases, LIG1, LIG3 and LIG4. LIG1 and LIG4 encode a single DNA ligase polypeptide, while LIG3 gene encodes nuclear and mitochondrial versions of DNA ligase IIIα by alternative translation initiation and a germ cell-specific version, DNA ligase IIIβ, by alternative splicing. Steady-state fluorescence of AF488-labeled DNA oligonucleotides was measured in 1 cm × 1 cm quartz cuvettes. fluorescence emission was measured at 518 nm. thermal denaturation assays were performed using 20 nM DNA in 10...

Katherine Dunham Influence On Dance

...the caribbean islands aforementioned for eighteen months(1934-35) to observe and learn the choreography. In her writings described dancers as being in low squatting positions and pressing knees against the knees of another dancer. A photograph of Dunham and two other dancers , shows the three posed in a position derived from the knee-to-knee style of the cultural dancers. She was able to popularize her very own recitals in New York and Chicago. She herself performed on Broadway, reforming her work to fit a bigger stage. In her dances, Trinidadian religious rituals and “plantation dances” were reproduced on stage using the Cakewalk, which was one of the first African American dances to become popular among white audiences, the Juba, and Ballin the Jack, giving them a tribal twist. In 1963 to 1964 she worked at the Metropolitan Opera and was the first black choreographer to do so. Later she opened the Dunham School of Dance and Theater in New York which taught “basic principles of African movement”. Isolation of different parts of the body was a defining aspect of her style. Along with the Graham technique, the Dunham technique was a “lasting achievement of twentieth-century dance”. In 1965 her company made its last professional appearance, but Alvin Ailey’s company reperformed some of her productions. The difference between Dunham and other people who gave dance a new look is the fact that she was an African-American women. During the early decades of the 20th century segregation...
