Banana Peel

...the Study Bananas are among the most widely consumed fruits on the planet and, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Americans' favorite fresh fruit. The curvy yellow fruits are high in "potassium and pectin, a form of fiber," said Laura Flores, a San Diego-based nutritionist. They can also be a good way to get magnesium and vitamins C and B6. "Bananas are high in antioxidants, which can provide protection from free radicals, which we come into contact with every day, from the sunlight to the lotion you put on your skin," Flores added. Hawaii is the only place in the U.S. where bananas are grown commercially, although at one time they were also grown in southern California and Florida. The overwhelming majority of the bananas Americans eat come from countries in Latin America and South America, including Costa Rica, Ecuador, Colombia, Honduras, Panama, and Guatemala. Bananas were first found in New Guinea and spread throughout the Philippines nearly 4,000 years ago, and from their diversified around the world. They became a popular item in India, Indonesia, Australia, and Malaysia and were even used to make clothes and other fabrics in Japan. It wasn’t until they hit colonial plantations in America that they were used for inter cropping plants such as coffee, cacao, and pepper plantations. Their leaves provided the perfect shade for the more valuable plants, which was only the beginning of their endless environmental uses and health benefits. Bananas are rich......

Shoe Polish Out of Banana Peel Extract

...Shoe Polish out of Banana Peel extract An Investigative Project Presented to: Mr. Paul Keenan C. Butt At Philippine Women’s University Jose Abad Santos Edsa QC In Partial fulfilment of the research in Chemistry By: Gabrielle Balanon III-Newton March 2014 Abstract The product of my research is a shoe polish made out of Banana peel extract. Tannin, an astringent that is an important ingredient in the process of tanning leather, can be found in Banana peels. This makes it an efficient ingredient for making shoe polish. I also decided to use Banana peels because there is a significant amount of banana peel waste being generated all around the world, so instead of just throwing them away and letting them rot, it’s better to put them to good use. The materials and ingredients needed for my research are very easy to get a hold of and doesn’t cost much as well. The process of making the product won’t take long either. It is a very affordable and effective product. It goes to show that Banana peels are more than just a part of the classic physical comedy slapstick visual gag, the "slipping on a banana peel" because it can actually make your shoes shine. Acknowledgement In the making of this research, I have a number of people who I would like to acknowledge for their unending patience and their big help. Firstly, I would like to acknowledge my parents. For all the patience they have given me. They have put in the effort......

...Literature Citation When writing a research paper, literature citation is important for the following two reasons: (1) to avoid plagiarism (which is against the student code of conduct and is grounds for failing the course) and (2) to assign proper authority to a statement (this adds weight to your paper). You may use any style of literature citation as long as the proper authorities are cited in the text and full references are provided at the end of your paper. Here is an example of a style that is common in the biological literature. In-Text Citations Whether you are directly quoting or paraphrasing, your reference is cited in the text, before the end of the statement. The in-text citation consists of the author(s) last name(s) and the year of publication. For example, Drosophila magnaquinaria, fruit flies that are only found on skunk cabbage, prefer other hosts for feeding, egg-laying, and larval development than they do skunk cabbage (Courtney and Kibota, 1990). If there are more than two authors, then you may list the first author’s name followed by et al. For example, Mutational studies of Daphnia, Drosophila, Caenorhabditis, and Escherichia all provide estimates for the genomic deleterious mutation rate (Lynch et al., 1999). If you don’t know the name of the author (if the information comes from a website, for example), then you may list the website title or URL in place of the author’s name). Example Literature Cited Section The Literature Cited Section provides......

Abd El-azeem3 1: Holding Company for Potable Water and Sanitation, Fayoum, Egypt 2: Instrumental Analytical Chemistry, University of Duisburg-Essen, Essen, Germany 3: Chemistry Departement, Faculty of Science, Fayoum University, Fayoum, Egypt Introduction Water is one of the vital necessities for the survival of human beings. Wastewater reclamation, recycling and reuse are vital to meet the water requirements for irrigation, industry and domestic use due to increasing population and development in many parts of the world. Industrial wastewaters largely possess organic and inorganic materials such as dyes, phenols, aromatic compounds, and heavy metals [1]. Phenols cause bad taste and odor of drinking water and can exert negative effects on different biological processes. Phenol and its derivatives also show mutagenic effects by unbinding of the DNA helix, inhibition of DNA synthesis in human, induction of gene mutations, chromosome aberrations and a neuploid formations (phenol, catechol) [2]. Because of this increased awareness and concern about environmental pollution, stringent national and international legislation has been set up, generating more efforts of research work in this area, especially in finding better and more efficient techniques to treat wastewater bearing these organic pollutants [3]. Bio-sorbents are......

The fruits grow in clusters hanging from the top of the plant. Almost all modern edible parthenocarpic (seedless) bananas come from two wild species – Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana.
