Don’t the hard workers that are the fuel to America and others comfortable way of life deserve an enjoyable life too? If not even that far, at least a livable life? That might sound crazy, but for many lower class citizens their life is almost unlivable on the salary they receive. Barbara Ehrenreich went first hand into the belly of the beast by committing to a life of lower class living, and although she is an intelligent well acclaimed writer one of the biggest things she learned is, ‘[no job] no matter how lowly, is truly “unskilled”’. Even with her high education and healthy lifestyle she struggled in the minimum wage world. So what does that say for those that never had a higher education or healthy way of life available to them? Cultural Baggage Rhetorical Analysis

...In her essay “Cultural Baggage,” Barbara Ehrenreich attempts to convince readers that having no culture is better than continuing the culture of their ancestors. Ehrenreich is prompted into writing this essay because she was asked about her connections to her heritage. After searching and being unable to find a strong connection, she comes to the conclusion that the culture of none is better and then tries to convince her readers of that. However, “Cultural Baggage” is ineffective because Ehrenreich fails to fulfill her purpose of convincing readers of her claim. She fails to do so because of a lack of logos, ineffective ethos, inconsistencies in her structure, and the alienation of her readers who are proud of their culture. Because of these...

Serving Ehrenreich's On Dumpster Diving

...The credibility of the speaker is an essential element of any argument, and credibility is derived from one or more of several factors, including a relationship of trust between speaker and audience, or a recognized personal authority on a certain subject, derived subsequently either from personal experience or extensive education. A podiatrist is credible when talking about feet because he has both the education and personal experience to back his claims. A soldier has credibility when discussing war because she has lived it. A writer has credibility on the subject of language because it flows in his veins. From these examples it can be surmised that credibility must be earned, and that this is not a task rapidly achieved. In the essays Serving...

Preface This isn’t really a teacher’s manual, not, at least, in the sense of a catechism of questions and correct answers and interpretations. Because the questions provided after each selection in Rereading America are meant to stimulate dialogue and debate — to generate rather than terminate discourse — they rarely lend themselves to a single appropriate response. So, while we’ll try to clarify what we had in mind when framing a few of the knottier questions, we won’t be offering you a list of “right” answers. Instead, regard this manual as your personal support group. Since the publication of the first edition, we’ve had the chance to learn from the experiences of hundreds of instructors nationwide, and we’d like to use this manual as a forum where we can share some of their concerns, suggestions, experiments, and hints. We’ll begin with a roundtable on issues you’ll probably want to address before you meet your class. In the first section of this manual, we’ll discuss approaches to...
