In order to discuss the relationship that consists between ethics and law, first, we must first define what ethics and what law is. This will give an individual a better understanding on how ethics and law can virtually go hand-and-hand. Then, we will explain how the relationship exists between ethics and law. Lastly, give an example and explain how an action can be unethical yet illegal for better understanding.
Ethics can be defined as an individuals inner-feeling or as we all know to be our “gut” feeling. This feeling plays a vital role alongside with one’s values to evaluate a situation and making a decision on what’s right. There are indicators of what ethics is, such as what is consider an inappropriate behavior. Another indicator is how an individual should behave to prevent bodily harm to another individual (Jones, 2007, p.141). Ethics are more so standards by which how an individual should act based on their values. One’s actions, attitude, and how one seems to be motivated is an individuals core beliefs based on their values. Ethics is one of the stepping-stones and sets the foundation on how society helps members know what is and is not acceptable. Most importantly, ethics enlightens society and helps us understand that we have a responsibility to boost the morale and well being of others. Ethical values take precedence over non-ethical values. Living a good life is the central point of ethics and one’s values.
Laws are implemented to specify what people can and cannot do. Laws also specify what sanctions or punishments will follow if laws are broken (Jones, 2007, p. 141).
There are also many controversies when ethics and laws linked together. But we must understand that once the law is passed, how we behave in any given situation alters from the personal realm to a more social determined realm. Some actions are opened to discussion whether they
