Case Analysis and Problem Identification

Business Database Company (BDC) possesses a bureaucratic organization structure with at least five levels of hierarchy, through which BDC's business tasks and responsibility are allocated and activities are coordinated and controlled. Meanwhile, BDC is a highly centralized organization, authority for decision making power is held in the hand of managers at the top the hierarchy. In the case of BDC, it could be revealed that the rigid structure with multi-layer hierarchy and centralization of power and authority has inhibited cross functional or inter-departmental teamwork and stifled business innovation, and become the major obstacle for encouraging initiative.

There are three key problems that I have identified, which consist of organizational inflexibility, resistance to change, culture and motivation. Each problem is examined in details as following:

Organizational Inflexibility - A computer-based business analysis system as an innovative product can enable customers to undertake their own database interrogation, and generate internal analysis reports. Such innovative product or service is aligned with company's strategy to promote the widespread use of computer within company, and offer customized product with a far better profit margins than conventional one. But as it can be perceived that BDC is a highly bureaucratic system of formalization with emphasize on rules and procedures to control and coordinate the activities of implementing a new idea; and more importantly, BDC's senior staffs are used to current work style and feel comfortable with time-consuming procedures to getting the approval for a new idea through a centralized and multi-level decision-making process. From the complaint of BDC's finance director, it is revealed that BDC is featured with a 'Mechanistic Structure' to stress 'proper channel' to

Ecotour

...Conceptual Framework of Ecotourism Ecotourism is defined as a “purposeful travel to natural areas to understand the culture and natural history of the environment, taking care not to alter the integrity of the ecosystem, while producing economic opportunities that make the conservation of natural resources beneficial to local people” (McCormick, 1994). Based on this definition, the conceptual framework was formulated. The operationalization of the framework included an assessment procedure, the ecotourism standards and its corresponding management guidelines. and a communication plan. These tools were guided by the principles presented by Jeffries (1997) on biodiversity and conservation, Kersten (1997) on Community Based Ecotourism and Community Building, Kusler (1991) on Strengthening Resource Conservation through Ecotourism, and McCormick (1994) on how ecotourism can save a rainforest. Furthermore, the experiences gained by Regis et al. (2000) from the Ecotourism project for the two municipalities of Sorsogon reinforced the management guidelines put together based on the Philippine situation. Characteristics of ecotourism According to Chesworth (1995), Ecotourism has six characteristics. These are: a) ecotourism involves travel to relatively undisturbed natural areas and/or archeological sites, b) it focuses on learning and the quality of experience, c) it economically benefits the local communities, d) ecotourists seek to view rare species, spectacular...

Cetane Number Effect on the Diesel Engine

...which are not turbine. An engine which was first introduced perhaps used a hot air which expanded on top of a piston. It was steam at high pressure which was then used against the piston which was pushed and moved in a cylinder linearly. The engine piston was connected to a crank through connecting rod caused the crank to rotate about its axis. Thus rotary motion is generated. An engine would definitely need an expanding medium which will push the piston when expanding. The expanding medium will have to be at higher temperature and pressure. The heat required for increasing the temperature and pressure of expanding medium can be given to the medium outside the cylinder in which the piston moves. In such a case the engine is called external combustion engine. The steam engine and hot air engine are examples. Fuel is burnt out of engine and heat is supplied to working fluid which enters the cylinder of the engine with high energy due to temperature and pressure. In internal combustion engine the fuel is burnt in the cylinder in confined space between walls and top of the cylinder. The heat causes the gases, which become...
