Brian Wells Case Study

...Was Brian Wells a Victim? Christopher Seymour Professor Ann Burgess Victimology November 19, 2012   Seymour 1 INTRODUCTION Early on the morning of August 23, 2003, Brian Wells walked into the Erie Pennsylvania PNC bank and calmly handed over a note to the teller –‘Gather employees with access codes to vault and work fast to fill bag with $250,000, you have 15 minutes.’ Wells picked up a dumdum lollypop and casually waited. He was armed with a shotgun disguised as a cane and had a large collar brace under his t-shirt that he claimed was a bomb. Quickly apprehended by Pennsylvania State Police, Wells claimed that three African American men forcibly attached the bomb to him, and he was ordered to rob the bank. Though a bomb squad was called, the bomb attached to Brian Wells detonated while he sat handcuffed surrounded by police. The FBI investigation that followed sought to uncover who was involved in the planning, and whether Brian Wells was a victim or conspirator. While the facts of the case suggest that Wells was involved in the bank robbery, the actions of three others – Marjorie Diehl Armstrong, Ken Barnes, and Bill Rothstein caused the plan to spiral out of control and left a deceased Brian Wells as a victim in this tragedy. SUMMARY OF THE CRIME On the morning of August 23rd, Brian Wells was working his shift as a pizza deliveryman, the same job he had held since dropping out of high school 30 years prior. According to initial statements by Wells, he was...

...A motorcycle is more than just a machine. The shape of the motorcycle is how the expression the bike gives off. The color of the motorcycle makes a difference. The motorcycle moves very fast. This bike would cause a person to feel like they were free. The smooth lines that the bike has, is like art, it defines the attitude of the motorcycle. The smooth lines on this bike show a sense of freedom. The position of the seat is to make it comfortable and enjoy the ride. The long handle bars make them easy to grab. The large motor gives the idea of speed. All the chrome shows the style of the rider. The sharp edges on the exhaust show that edge that the rider has. TRAVELLING BY MOTORBIKE IS EASIER AND SAFER THAN TRAVELING BY CAR In my opinion, there are both advantages and disadvantages in owning a motorbike compared with owning a car. I will describe the advantages of having a motorbike first. A motorbike is quicker in heavy traffic, you don’t have to wait in line with the cars. It uses less petrol and is more fun and exciting to use than a car, especially in summer. Furthermore, you can easily go anywhere, even off-road. So, I’d say there are several advantages to owning a motorbike. On the other hand, motorbikes are definitely more dangerous than cars; you don’t have any protection in an accident. Secondly, it can be very cold in winter and you don’t have any protection from rain, snow, wind or the sun. You need to wear special clothes, which can be uncomfortable....

...social sciences and life sciences, a case study is an implementation of a research method involving an up-close, in-depth, and detailed examination of a subject of study (the case), as well as its related contextual conditions. Although no single definition of the case study exists, case-study research has long had a prominent place in many disciplines and professions, ranging from psychology, anthropology, sociology, and political science to education, clinical science, social work, and administrative science.[1][2] The "case" being studied may be an individual, organization, event, or action, existing in a specific time and place. For instance, clinical science has produced both well-known case studies of individuals and also case studies of clinical practices.[3][4][5] However, when case is used in an abstract sense, as in a claim, proposition, or argument, such a case can be the subject of many research methods, not just a case study. Thomas[6] offers the following definition of case study: "Case studies are analyses of persons, events, decisions, periods, projects, policies, institutions, or other systems that are studied holistically by one or more method. The case that is the subject of the inquiry will be an instance of a class of phenomena that provides an analytical frame — an object — within which the study is conducted and which the case illuminates and explicates." According to J. Creswell, data collection in a case study occurs over a "sustained period of time...

Discuss Research Into Privation

...Privation of attachment means failure to form an attachment. Privation usually occurs when children have been kept in extreme isolation and therefoe have never had the opppurtunity to form an attachment. There are 3 main types of evidence regarding privation and those are longitudinal studies of children in instituational care; case studies of children raised in extreme isolation; and studies of reactive attachment disorder which is a category of mental disorder attributed to a lack of early attachments. A longiudinal study of ex-institutional children was done by Hodges and Tizard in 1989, to investigate the effects of privation by following the same children over a long period of time to collect reliable information linking early experiences to later outcomes for the same individual. The participants were 65 children who had been placed in an instituation when they were less than 4 months old. There was an explicit policy in the institution against caregivers forming attachments with the children. This would suggest the children experienced early privation. By the age of 4, 24 of the institutionalized children had been adopted, 15 had returned to their natural homes and the rest remained in the institution. Assessment at the age of 8 and 16 years old involved interviewing those children who were adopted and those who had returned to their original homes. Their parents, their teachers and their peers were also interviewed. Data was also collected from a control group...

Appendix – Used for exhibits such as pro-forma income statements and other detailed analyses. The Case Analysis Framework The case analysis framework presented here is a synthesis of the frameworks used by your professor and other marketing professors who use case analysis in their courses. It will provide a solid structure to organize the diverse information presented in a case. As you work your way through this framework, or a similar approach to case analysis, we offer the following hints to increase your probability of success: 1. No one can analyze a case after reading it only one time, or even worse, doing the analysis during the first reading of the case. You should read through the case once just to get an understanding of the nature of the case. During the second reading, you can begin to structure and classify the issues as they appear. A truly comprehensive case analysis will probably require at least three readings. 2. Don’t get trapped into thinking the “answer” to the case is hidden somewhere in the case text. There is never a single answer to a case just as there is never a single marketing strategy that is...

Case Study Method

...Case Study Method The case method of teaching is widely used in business and science education today. By definition, a case is a written account of an actual condition that has occurred. This account is used as a real life example of a situation that can be analyzed by the students to teach concepts related to course study. Most often teaching with the case method requires facilitation and discussion of the account by the students (Foran, 2002). The aim is to analyze and apply the various course concepts as they pertain to the events in the case study. Some of the tools used by the teacher in the case method may be debate, or collaboration by placing students in groups. William Perry is a psychologist professor at Harvard and has commented on what is known as the Perry model for student learning. During early education students learn in what is called the dualist mode, where educators are the authority figures that students model and accept as 100% accurate in everything they say (Herreid, 2004). These authority figures lecture them on what is right and wrong and the students do not question this authority. The answers given by the teachers are the only correct ones and so the student learns to memorize these answers. During tests these answers are the only ones accepted as correct. Perry notes that this lecture mode only emphasizes the dualist mode where students are not allowed to think for themselves. He also makes the point that this is not how science works (Herreid...
