A Man Is a Man

...A Short Essay A Man is a Man, A Woman is a Woman Tabitha Ponder Ashford University ENG 125 Introduction to Literature Professor Carla McGill February 4, 2013 A Man is a Man, A Woman is A Woman Some may say that a man is a man and a woman is a woman; and they should stay in there prospective places at all costs. Gender roles can sometimes be reversed. Specifically, I am going to address the gender reversal in marriage. Several factors may contribute to role (gender) reversal. It depends on the personality of the individuals involved, and how they learn to interact with one another (or not). Also, a change in circumstances or a chain of events can force a gender role reversal. For example, the husband may get hurt on the job and now the wife who is accustomed to staying home with the kids now is forced to go out and provide for the family. Let’s define gender roles within a traditional marriage between a man and a woman. Traditionally, the husband is the one who provides for the family financially. He is the bread winner. Because he is the bread winner, normally he is the final voice of authority in the home concerning any issues that may arise. The wife is the one who is the caregiver. The wife is the nurturer; she takes care of the children and the husband too! She is also takes care of the affairs of the home. The depth of most people’s belief in gender-role stereotypes is often overlooked. A husband may have the need...

A Man

...A shirtless young man stares out past the camera as if he is looking at the logo above his head. He needlessly clings to the rock to further accentuate his impressive body structure. The logo above his head reads “DOLCE & GABBANA” in a bold semi-transparent font. A small bottle of something is juxtaposed to his left. It is the item they are trying to sell, a sports cologne. This advertisement is very effective because of the use of ethos and pathos. Although those two parts are heavily used in this ad, logos is not present as much. Even with that being said many people are going to buy this particular cologne based on ethos and pathos. This is true because Dolce and Gabbana is a very well-known company, which plays a huge part in ethos with credibility and authority. Pathos is also used heavily with people wanting to look like that or women wanting their men to look like that; this makes the reader believe that if they wear this cologne women will be more attracted to them, and that they, too, can look as good as the model in the ad. This advertisement was featured in Muscle & Fitness magazine. This particular magazine is aimed towards classy young to middle-aged men who are professionals. This can be seen through the contents in the magazine. The magazine has lots of ads that are of watches, cologne, and nice cars. With that being said we do not believe that this magazine is geared toward younger teenage men because of what ads, pictures and articles in the magazine...

...Moose and the Sparrow Hugh Garner From the very beginning Moose Maddon picked on him. The kid was bait for all of Maddon's cruel practical jokes around the camp. He was sent back to the tool-house for left-handed saws, and down to the office to ask the pay cheater if the day's mail was in, though the rest of us knew it was only flown out every week. The kid's name was Cecil, and Maddon used to mouth it with a simpering mockery, as if it pointed to the kid being something less than a man. I must admit though that the name fitted him, for Cecil was the least likely lumberjack I've seen in over twenty-five years in lumber camps. Though we knew he was intelligent enough, and a man too, if smaller than most of us, we all kidded him, in the good natured way a bunkhouse gang will. Maddon however always lisped the kid's name as if it belonged to a woman. Moose Maddon was as different from Cecil as it is possible for two human beings to be and still stay within the species. He was a big moose of a man, even for a lumber stiff, with a round flat unshaven face that looked down angrily and dourly at the world. Cecil on the other hand was hardly taller than an axe-handle, and almost as thin. He was about nineteen years old, with the looks of an inquisitive sparrow behind his thick horn-rimmed glasses. He had been sent out to the camp for the summer months by an distant relative who had a connection with the head office down in Vancouver. That summer we were cutting big stuff in an almost...

...unhappy, God's unjust; If man alone engross not Heav'n's high care, Alone made perfect here, immortal there: Snatch from his hand the balance and the rod, Rejudge his justice, be the God of God. In pride, in reas'ning pride, our error lies; All quit their sphere, and rush into the skies. Pride still is aiming at the blest abodes, Men would be angels, angels would be gods. Aspiring to be gods, if angels fell, Aspiring to be angels, men rebel: And who but wishes to invert the laws Of order, sins against th' Eternal Cause. V. Ask for what end the heav'nly bodies shine, Earth for whose use? Pride answers, " 'Tis for mine: For me kind Nature wakes her genial pow'r, Suckles each herb, and spreads out ev'ry flow'r; Annual for me, the grape, the rose renew, The juice nectareous, and the balmy dew; For me, the mine a thousand treasures brings; For me, health gushes from a thousand springs; Seas roll to waft me, suns to light me rise; My foot-stool earth, my canopy the skies." But errs not Nature from this gracious end, From burning suns when livid deaths descend, When earthquakes swallow, or when tempests sweep Towns to one grave, whole nations to the deep? "No, ('tis replied) the first Almighty Cause Acts not by partial, but by gen'ral laws; Th' exceptions few; some change since all began: And what created perfect?"—Why then man? If the great end be human happiness, Then Nature deviates; and can man do less? As much that...

In the case of the blunt rod, the lesser emissions provided a desired path for the lightning to travel down. A lot of research was put in to find the ideal tip shape for lightning rods, and it was determined that the increased surface area directly correlates to how strong the electric field is at the tip of the lightning air terminal (LAT). Introduction: It is a beautiful and deadly natural occurrences. With a shock of several million volts per strike, and the capability to reach temperatures between fifteen-thousand and sixty-thousand degrees, lighting is one of the most powerful forces known to man. With all of that power lightning can cause a lot of damage. In North America lightning damage to equipment results in losses exceeding twenty-six billion dollars annually. Lightning strikes the ground around 8.6 million times a day making it nearly impossible to avoid, no matter where you live. A great deal of effort is put into protecting people and property from lighting strikes. One of the simplest and best known devices developed for lightning protection is the lightning rod. A lightning rod is a small metal rod that is normally attached to a...

...Lady Gaga Lady Gaga right now is one of the hottest music artists on the entire planet. Her songs, music videos, the way she dresses, and even the way she acts keeps everyone interested and guessing on what in the world she is going to do next. She is famous not only because her songs and her music is so good, even though it is, but also because she is so interesting to follow as a person and she really tells it how it is. In a recent interview Gaga was asked if she does do illegal substances at all and she stated that she had to be honest and come clean to the fact that she does smoke Marijuana on occasion because she feels it helps her connect on a deeper level with music and that she doesn’t want to lie to her fans about it, and she also doesn’t want to condone the use of the drug. Besides being a great singer, stylist, and dancer Lady Gaga also does more than her fair part of community service. Gaga partnered with Virgin Mobile offering VIP tickets to fans who volunteer their time to homeless youth organizations, which raised more than $80,000 to support homeless kids, and created 30,000 hours of community service for hundreds of charities across the country. She also is partnered with the National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH) where she always volunteers time to talk with and hang out with kids. So not only does her music stray from the mainstream pop music culture but the way she used her music and shows to inspire people to volunteer there time to charities...

...Week1 I think that it truly depends on the person and that person alone. Anyone can learn something, but then he or she will have to be willing to take the step to actually make that change.  I feel that you can send anyone to a class to learn how to emotionally intelligent, but it is the matter if they actually take what they learned back into their jobs. I feel that it does start with our supervisors who have to teach us the right way. In order for us to do our job correctly we need to be taught and molded the right way. So yes we can learn it, it is just the matter of taking it all in and really using it in ways that we work. I also think that everyone is emotionally intelligent in their own way and how we decide to use it or when is entirely up to us as adults. What are the personal characteristics that you believe would contribute to the success of leaders? I feel that in order to be a successful leader you have to want to be in that particular position. I think that in order to be a good leader you have to have listening skills, be fair, and know what you are doing. I have seen too many people in leadership positions that cannot handle the pressure or their own employees. I think that being a good listener is something that employees want so that if they have any problems they can express them and be heard. Being fair to all employees is something else that you have to do. You cannot show favoritism because you like one person better or be mean to someone that you do...

And Man

...English and Literature Recent Advances in Technology Are Ruining the English Language In this modern era, technology is dramatically developing and evolving at an astounding rate. The advancement in technology affects almost every aspect of today’s society. The English language is a prime example of this. Linguists from different universities have begun noticing changes in the modern English language; most of the alterations tend to be significant. The English language has been negatively affected by the rise of the Internet, smartphones and social media. To begin with, the Internet has had a significant impact on the teenagers’ lifestyle. This in turn has brought about a dramatic change in the level of English used. Firstly, adolescents in schools have recently created new acronyms to be used on the Internet such as in discussion boards or blogs. Examples of acronyms contain: ‘FYI’ (which stands for ‘for your information’), ‘TMI’ (which stands for ‘too much information’), ‘BRB’ (which stands for be right back) and ‘TTYL’ (which stands for ‘talk to you later’). As a result, these new acronyms have caused students’ English proficiency to deteriorate. The spread of the recently created acronyms have been incorporated into students’ writings which therefore gives the teachers a harder time of ‘reiterating’ the importance of being able to distinguish between the ‘social networking language’ and ‘academic writing’ This means that the students might later suffer in university when...

The Young Man and the Old Man

...the Bible, David was a young man who, using only a slingshot and five rocks struck down the giant Goliath and saved his people. David has been a symbolic figure in art throughout history. Two men who lived nearly a hundred years apart both sculptured the famous biblical figure of David through the lens of his own times but they were both influenced by many of the same things. Michelangelo showed David as a symbol of courage in the face of the enemy while Donatello depicted David as a symbol what can be accomplished by even the smallest entity. His character and story have been interpreted and re-interpreted by many artists in different mediums. Donatello was was born in Florence in 1386. He was an early Renaissance artist who lived at the end of the Dark Ages. He is known as the artist whose work officially began the Italian Renaissance (“David”). Donatello was first introduced to Roman sculpture when he visited Rome with his master, Brunelleschi (“Donatello”). It was there that he carefully studied classical Roman sculptures. The studies he preformed in Rome greatly influenced him the rest of his life. He is known for making the first sculptures with classical influence after the Dark Ages. The influence of his Roman studies is shown in the natural flow of the statue, something which is not seen in any art of the Dark Ages. Michelangelo was born to a middle class banking family on March 6, 1475 in Caprese, Italy. When he was still a young man, his mother become deathly...

Androgynous Man

...The Appeal of the Androgynous Man “Androgyny is a term derived from the Greek words andros, meaning man and gyné, meaning woman, referring to the combination of masculine and feminine characteristics. This may be as in fashion, sexual identity, or sexual lifestyle or it may refer to biologically inter-sexed physicality, especially with regards to plant and human sexuality.” What makes a good relationship? Is it healthy for two people in a relationship to be exactly alike? In my opinion two people that are exactly alike won’t last in a relationship. In the article “The Appeal of the Androgynous Man” written by the editor in chief of “O” magazine Amy Gross, she talks about what kind of man should appeal to women? Amy Gross feels that an “all man’s man” is an insensitive, lazy, man who would only does things when needed. She compares the qualities and characteristics between an “androgynous man”, and the “all man’s man” Amy goes in to describe her views on an all-man’s man by saying “for one thing, never walks to the grocery store unless the little woman is away visiting her mother with the kids”. “All-men men don’t know how to shop in a grocery store unless it is to buy a 6-pack and some pretzels”. She then starts describing her first encounter with an androgynous man as him being “more self amused, less inflated, more quirky, vulnerable and responsive” as to an all man’s man who she says is a “chauvinist” “who has no taste in food, art, or how to live”. Based on Gross’s encounters...

Man of War

...Portuguese man of war Anyone unfamiliar with the biology of the venomous Portuguese man-of-war would likely mistake it for a jellyfish. Not only is it not a jellyfish, it's not even an "it," but a "they." The Portuguese man-of-war is a siphonophore, an animal made up of a colony of organisms working together. The man-of-war comprises four separate polyps. It gets its name from the uppermost polyp, a gas-filled bladder, or pneumatophore, which sits above the water and somewhat resembles an old warship at full sail. Man-of-wars are also known as bluebottles for the purple-blue color of their pneumatophores. Most people can be attracted by its purple-blue color, its like the color of the clean ocean, however, never being interested in touching them. Its venomous tentacles can deliver a painful sting. The gelatinous consistench and open-ocean lifestyle of pertuguese man of war make it especially difficult to study the creatures. And man-of-wars don’t do well in captivity. Researchers can only keep them for a limited time but haven’t yet been able to raise them throughout their entire life cycle in lab. The portuguese man of war is mainly distributed in the warm waters, Although it can be found anywhere in the open ocean it is most commonly found in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans. The Portuguese man o' war has been found as far north as the Bay of Fundy and the Hebrides. It is...
