Beautiful Observations

There are many objects we look at every day, but have you ever stopped to really look at the meaning behind these objects? Recently, I did just that. There is a shadowbox picture that hangs in my sisters bedroom that I covet. I say covet because my mother gave it to my sister Tracy on her 21st birthday and I was jealous. Why not me, I thought. Inside its beautifully carved wooden protected home is several gorgeous details that captured my attention and made me wish I was the possessor of this breathtaking collage. Before I talk about the inside, I would like to talk about the carved frame. I enjoy touching it with my hands because of the beautiful carvings etched into the wood. It makes me think about a bible because it has thick edges. On these edges, there are indentions that make me think of little angel wings. If that isn’t stunning enough, let me tell you about the inside. There is a glass case inside the wood. On the inside of the glass is a big bronze heart that is shaped perfectly and has a rose running through it. Beneath the heart is an inscribed poem entitled “Daughter”. It’s a beautiful poem. The poem is written in calligraphy and it explains how a daughter is kind, loving and delicate like a rose. It also speaks on how a daughter is remarkable, beautiful inside, always thoughtful and considerate. You can look at this frame and tell it wasn’t the most expensive frame, but its beauty and meaning makes it seem like it cost a million dollars. Although it was a gift to my sister for her birthday many years ago, I always took a liking to it. It makes me think of beauty. Its chocolate cover makes me think of a Butterfinger candy bar. It smells like pledge and Windex because my mom cares for it and has always made sure it kept a look of elegance. It sounds hollow and if you could imagine what heavy sounds like it would

Classroom Observation Paper

...For the participant observation project I chose to do Chapters book store, which was located at Orchard park mall. The dates I went were; first 26th of July around 1.00 pm, second day was on the 31st of July around 4.00 pm, and finally on the 3rd of August around 11.00 pm. Through critical thinking and deep observation this article’s focus will be; rituals, gender codes, and consumerism (Schultz et al. 2012). Chapters book store is about selling books: the concept of consumerism is deeply tied to selling books. People buy books they prefer and due to consumer demand more books are brought in and sold. Furthermore, this repeated process of buying and selling has become some sort of ritual. There is a repeated process of consumerism at play here, this book buying process is out of daily routine, then there seems to be a schema which is buying books, all of these fits very well with the definition of ritual (Schultz et al. 2012). The people working at chapters and its customers are performing this ritual on a daily basis. There were other rituals such the process of buying of books as well. The customer has to always head to the cashier, the...

Just Swinging by

...Rhys Young Michelle Britt English 100 12, September, 2012 Just Swinging By I was just swinging by the bench swing near the amphitheater when I remembered sitting there not too long ago and that I was going to write an essay about that spot. Our class was journaling in the blistering heat writing about that specific area’s feel, noises, sights, smells and even the tastes. Whether these observations were physical or metaphorical it did not matter. This spot is one of the most beautiful and relaxing locations on campus in my opinion and has more meaning than one might imagine. A few of my observations can be related back to the demanding and lavished American culture that we live in, environmental issues, and the modern world as a whole. These connections might seem cryptic but they are important connections nonetheless. This spot on campus is beautiful. Sitting and swinging on the bench swing overlooking the small lake with the sun beaming and reflecting off of the still water is quite a sight. The smell of the grass, water, and plants is nice. There are plants and bushes surrounding this lake but the opening in front of the swing is just enough to enjoy the entire area. I was fortunate enough to see various wildlife in the area. I saw a turtle poking its head out of the water for some air. There was some type of bird going for a swim and various insects crawling and flying around the area. They definitely know that this is the place to be. However, There is much...

Observation

...different experiences. When this happens, the opportunity becomes available to observe his or her surroundings. I wanted to do the observation experiment at a place I find to be very interesting, it was a Tattoo Shop. This was a place that I felt was on the same standers as a mall and it was also a place that I visited and thought that it would be interesting to observe the people in my surroundings. At the tattoo shop, people of all walks of life come for different personal reasons. Some people came to get a tattoo because they lost a love one and wanted to honor his or her memory. Some came to get a tattoo because he or she loved the art, and some people were there just to support some one else. As I sat in my chair doing this observation, I listen to a young lady who came to the Shop with her friend. She stated that she was there to get a sleeve done on her arm. If you are unfamiliar with what a sleeve is, it is when a person gets a tattoo that goes from the shoulder area down to the wrist area of the arm. This young lady was there getting something that she felt meant something to her. She was getting a picture of a clock with the saying “Only Time Will Tell” drawn on her arm. As I listen to her talk with her friend I could see the sadness in her eyes as she tried to joke with her party. After she was serviced, the picture on her arm was beautiful. The Tattoo Artist really out did himself with her drawing. As she walked out, many stopped to compliment her on her new piece...

A Story of Love and Courage

...A Story of Love and Courage Love is a very powerful emotion. It provides people with courage and causes them to act bravely. To have someone to love, and therefore someone to act bravely for, makes one capable of more than expected. Love leads to bravery and can get people through terrible times. In the movie Life is Beautiful, director Roberto Benigni shows the quality of bravery through the experiences of the main characters as they attempt to survive a concentration camp during World War II. When Guido Orefice, an Italian Jew, arrives in Arezzo, he meets Dora, who comes from a wealthy Italian family. Even though she is engaged, she falls in love with Guido, and they marry and have a son, Giosue. At Giosue’s fifth birthday, Guido and Giosue are taken by Nazis to a concentration camp, and Dora insists on voluntarily going with them. At the camp, Guido convinces Giosue that everything is just a game, and he will earn points towards winning a tank. Unfortunately, when Guido goes looking for Dora, he is caught and shot to death by a Nazi soldier, but Giosue and Dora survive. Love is a powerful emotion which leads to acts of bravery, that people perform, even when they are scared. This is shown by Dora’s love for Guido and Giosue, by Guido’s love for Giosue, and by Guido’s love for Dora. Undoubtedly, Dora loves her husband and her son with all her heart; she shows courage when she runs away with Guido, and later again when she volunteers to join Guido and Giosue at the concentration...

Generation Views

...Generation Views Around the world what sport do you think has become the most popular over the years? If you guessed racket ball then you’re probably wrong. It’s Called” The Beautiful Game “, and yes its soccer. They call it the beautiful game because of how one is able to manipulate the ball and make it do whatever they want it to. My dad taught me this meaning one day when we he was training me around the age of 8, and told me that if I kept working hard and stayed committed I would soon understand what he meant. From his generation to mine, soccer has increasingly become a much harder sport and because of that its popularity has increased heavily over the years. Why? Because the level of intensity soccer is played in today’s game, the merchandise big brands are producing, and the one and only World Cup. If you were to attend a professional soccer game without ever playing I’m sure it would change your perspective on the sport for certain. It’s not as easy as it looks on TV, believe me. Modern day soccer is so intense it’s almost insane. If you don’t know what I’m talking about go out and look for some team you could randomly join and play a whole game. Bet most of you wouldn’t last. It’s not just some sport you can just join in now to pass time. It’s either give it your all or go and play another sport because soccer is that serious now. Everyone at the high level is fast, strong, smart, and determined to take the ball from you. It’s nonstop running for...

Yolo

...have a make out session of our own. Surprisingly, it worked. The power of YOLO, you guys! 2. One night recently I went to an ex-boyfriend’s birthday party and waited around until everyone left so I could seduce him. My plan backfired, however, because by the time everyone left, I was so wasted that I ended up just passing out on the couch. The next morning, my ex was like “…” and I was like “…” and we both were like “YOLO.” 3. Anytime I eat after 4 a.m., it’s predicated upon the excuse of “YOLO.” There should be a sandwich at the deli just named “YOLO.” “I’ll take the YOLO to go and, no, I prefer not to talk about it.” 4. Last month, I stayed up till 6 a.m. with a beautiful boy I just met. He was so gorgeous but so, so dumb. I don’t ordinarily do things like that. I don’t just go home with beautiful boys and stay up till 6 a.m. I am a lady, dammit! But, I swear it was the YOLO taking over me. Okay, and maybe like a little bit of the MDMA I ingested earlier in the evening, if you want to be honest, WHICH I DON’T. That night, as he was bringing me to climax, I wanted to scream “YOLO YOLO YOOOOOOO-LOOOOOOOOO!” but I didn’t. Missed opportunity, for sure. 5. Ordering delivery three times in one day. #YOLO. 6. Crying in a dressing room because you went up a size. #YOLO. 7. I quit my job six months ago because I hated it and the florescent lighting was hurting my eyes. Sunrise on the Beach

...after she took a teaching position and continued to paint in Eskimo and Aleut villages in Alaska. It was in Alaska that she took a watercolor workshop from the internationally known artist, teacher, and author Zoltan Szabo. Virginia went on to earn a Master’s Degree and Ph.D. at the University of Arizona in Tucson. She has works in private, public and corporate collections worldwide. Virginia has also won juried awards in visual art and in video production. Virginia now resides in Port Isabel and many of her “local” pieces can be found at the Art Gallery in the lighthouse square. “Sunrise on the Beach” with out a doubt shows an outdoor setting with images in relation to a beautiful sunrise walk on the beach. The imagery used is from a personal perspective of an actual sunrise on the beautiful South Padre Island. A person, water, sand, a seagull, waves, clouds, and the vivid colors of the sunrise are all imagery that brings this painting to life and making the painting realistic. Being a surfer and enjoying sunrise surfing on South Padre Island, this painting brings a calming, peaceful, and happy feeling to me. I also think that the images are vague enough that just about anybody that has been to the beach can be taken back to their own memories of that time the experienced. These feelings lead me to believe that this seascape is an impressionistic...

Italy

...In Italy, the population is 58 million. More of these people live in the North of Italy. I believe that this is because the industry growth has been very rapid. It is now the 7th richest nation and the industry triangle is the wealthiest region out of the whole country. The industry triangle has become so rich because goods are able to be exported and sold in Germany, France and Great Britain as it is located near. However, the South of Italy is a very poor country. Standard of living must be pretty tough as people live on hilltop town’s rustic areas. The South is not developing as a country and has a little industry so therefore; it will not attract many people. Many people from the South migrate to the North or to other European countries. In the rest of my assessment I will tell you differences and similarities about the north and south of Italy. The climate in Italy has a big range, from the north to south, and highland to mountain tops. Some days in the north when its winter it can be snowing and -2’C and some occasional rain. The middle region is slightly hotter reaching 12’C and the South is even hotter up to a temperature of 18’C. So therefore, the range is 20’C which is three completely different ways of living. In summer it is quite the opposite, it is not such of a great change of temperature between north and the south of Italy. The North has a high humidity yet some rainy days. This hot weather is coming from Africa and the hot dry wind travels...

Compare How the Poets Present Ideas of Time in ‘to His Coy Mistress’ and One Other Poem.

...At the start of ‘to his coy mistress’ the poet describes how the voice would love his mistress if he had all the time in the world. This is represented in the first line which says ‘had we but world enough, and time,’ This immediately gives the reader a sense of urgency as it creates the image of time being limited and constricted. The use of the word ‘if’ suggests that time is imperative in order to be able for love to reach it’s full potential and that there is an absence of time so it is impossible to patiently enjoy love without rushing it. Alternatively, the language used in the first stanza could be seen as making a mockery of the idea of taking love slowly as it is referred to as ‘vegetable love’ that grows slower than empires. This guides the reader to view the idea of a love that is drawn out as boring and undesirable. This is emphasised towards the end of the poem when the voice describes the love that he wishes for with similes like ‘instant fire.’ This creates a contrast to the idea of a ‘vegetable love’ and makes the voice’s idea of a love sound much more favourable. Therefore, one of the ways that the poet presents ideas of time is that it is necessary for love to be savoured but at the same time it makes love boring. Another way that the poet presents ideas of time is in the first paragraph. This is because the voice says ‘but at my back I always hear, time’s winged chariot hurrying near.’ This creates the idea of time being powerful and ruling over love because...

Cliches in Football

...Why are there so many clichés in football? Every football fan would probably say that they're fluent in the "language of football". From the pragmatics of it, knowing that, in a footballing context, a brace is neither a device fitted to something to provide support or a pair of straps that pass over the shoulders and fasten to the top of trousers at the front and back to hold them up, to knowing the names of all the high potential, young gems that you've ever found on all the popular football management games you've ever played, football is a very broad and hard language to learn. One of the staples of the football language is the cliché. A phrase that is do overused that it loses its original impact, they're are hundreds of these phrases that are usually peppered in the post match interviews of players and managers and the commentaries of former players as former managers. A big question of those who are not fluent in the language of football is "what do all these clichés mean?" and "why are they used so often?" Some clichés are blatantly obvious, for example "A game of two halves" describes the structure of a football match perfectly, it has two sections of 45 minutes each (both sections are equal therefore they are "halves"). The cliché isn't meant to be a description of the structure of a game though, because a match can really have two juxtaposing halves, therefore a usage for the cliché. A great example of this is the 2005 Champions League final between AC Milan and...
