Have you ever passed someone on the street who looked different from everyone else? Did you sneak a couple of looks? It doesn’t seem like a big deal, but imagine being on the receiving end of those stares. The book Wonder by R.J. Palacio is about a ten year old boy named Auggie Pullman. Auggie is going to a new school called Beecher Prep. Auggie’s experiences at Beecher Prep has a positive impact on his life. When Auggie was born, he was born with a, “previously unknown type of mandibulofacial dysostosis” (page 104). Auggie’s face looks very different from most kids. Auggie lives with his mom, dad, and sister Via. Via described his face by saying, “His eyes are about an inch below where they should be on his face...He doesn’t have eyebrows or eyelashes. His nose is disproportionately big for his …show more content…
One example of Auggie being bullied is on the tour of the school by a kid named Julian on page 29, “‘What’s the deal with your face? I mean, were you in a fire or something?”’ Kids like Julian directly were mean to Auggie. Other kids were mean without really meaning to be. An example of this is, “Every new class I had was like a new chance for kids to “not stare” at me. They would sneak peeks at me from behind their notebooks or when they thought I wasn’t looking” (page 61). All these problems were nonexistent by the end of the year. Julian was no longer a bully to Auggie at the end of the year because his two friends who always had his back started showing kindness towards Auggie. Everyone stopped sneaking looks at Auggie by the end of the year because everyone was used to seeing his face. Although people might argue that Beecher Prep had a negative impact on Auggie’s life; Auggie’s life was positively impacted by his experiences at Beecher Prep because of kids who showed him
