...saying (what they didn’t yet know) their last goodbyes. I walked slowly and anxiously to the ship. A sudden chill of anticipation washed over me as I became just a few steps away from entering the ship. I was going to New York to visit my older sister who was soon to be married. The next thing I heard was my mother calling for me to hurry up onto the ship. I didn’t realise that I had stopped half way up the stairs daydreaming, and was holding up all the contented passengers. I was inside now and I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was incredible, like something I’ve never seen before! Everything was so clean and tidy. I could even see my own reflection in the floor! I looked up and it seemed as if there was no ending to the ceiling. The bellboy escorted us up to our deluxe suite, shortly along with our luggage. The room was astounding, far beyond anything I’d ever expected. My four-poster bed sat in the middle of my room with the bathroom and living room on each side. As my mother turned her back, I jumped onto the humungous bed in joy. That’s when I became aware of how comfortable the bed was. Unfortunately my mother turned back around before I could get off and sort out my dress again. She stared with an evil glint in her eye and then went over the same lecture she tells me nearly every day: “You are a young lady now Elizabeth, you cannot be going around acting the fool. That’s not upper class behaviour…blah blah blah!” I was only fifteen; I didn’t want to be like...

Helping Distressed Ofws Bounce Back

...Helping distressed OFWs bounce back TO WHAT extend are you willing to earn a living? Ronald Espiritu, a 33-year-old oversea Filipino worker (OFW) based in Miami, Florida endured hunger, fatigue, and worse, a measly salary—way below the minimum wage—just to make a living, according to a report in Pinoy-OFW.com. Along with a group of fellow Filipino workers, Espiritu may have had never seen daylight outside W South Beach hotel, Lincoln Road’s Quattro Italian restaurant, and Admiral’s Cove country club in Jupiter where he worked 100 hours weekly as a waiter and bellboy. His nights weren’t any better. As if there was enough time for a recommended eight-hour sleep, Espiritu always returned to a small barrack, where he and several other Filipinos were compressed like solid molecules, organized by the employment agency which brought him in Miami. But did money make it all worth while? Not really. Espiritu was paid only $6 per hour, which is below the minimum wage of $7.67. And sometimes, according to Espiritu, they weren’t paid at all. Espiritu and his fellow countrymen abroad was a clear victim of human trafficking, which is common to Filipinos. One million Filipinos migrate abroad every year for work opportunites, while 10 million Filipinos currently live and work abroad, according to the International Labor Organization. Meanwhile, a report commissioned by U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton titled “2011 U.S. Department of State Trafficking in Persons Report” placed...

What I Know Now

...Truly Not a Dummy If William Ellsworth Hoy were playing today, he would not be called "Dummy"--not by players nor by fans nor by the media. He'd be "Bill" or "Billy," perhaps "Will" or "Willie," maybe even "Ellie." He wouldn't be a deaf mute, either. He'd be "aurally and vocally challenged." But back when Hoy was playing, nicknames were descriptive, often to the point of cruelty. To Hoy, his condition wasn't an excuse; it was what it was. Indeed, he referred to himself as "Dummy" and politely corrected those who, for whatever reason, called him "William." Hoy would have been an exceptional man with or without his handicap. After his baseball career was over, he used his celebrity status to foster the needs and concerns of the deaf. He had a zest for life and once walked 72 blocks at the age of 80 to see his son, Judge Carson Hoy preside in court. At that advanced age he also danced the Charleston and pruned trees on his farm. William Ellsworth Hoy was born in Houcktown, Ohio, on May 23, 1862. His parents, Rebecca Hoffman and Jacob Hoy, were of English-German and Scottish stock and had a farm in Houcktown. William had three brothers, Smith, Frank, and John, as well as sister Ora. Contracting meningitis when he was three years old left William deaf and mute. Hoy entered the Ohio School for the Deaf in 1872, graduating in 1879. Highly intelligent and hardworking, he was valedictorian of his high school class. In those days many deaf people were either employed or self-employed...
