Gigs with Benefits

...In the July6, 2015 New Yorker article “Gigs with Benefits,” Surowiecki presents some attitudes toward the transportation industry. To begin with, a California labor commissioner ruled that “ a Uber driver who had filed a claim against the company was,… an employee.” Surowiecki believes if all the states followed this rule, then the U.S. transportation industry would be influenced, not just Uber. For companies, hiring independent contractors is less expensive than hiring employees since laws protect the benefits of workers. For Uber, one thing is that it covers its employees as contractors. Uber is able to monitor its employees by checking the customers’ ratings to drivers. Much worker-protection legislation declares that companies like Uber should prioritize workers’ benefits. However, Surowiecki thinks it is too early to say that employees who work several hours a week will benefit since most Uber drivers nowadays do not work for a long time every week. A study shows that 10 percent of workers were miscategorized and the real issues for Uber drivers is that they do not fit in any category. Hence, for those people, they cannot enjoy benefits. Surowiecki argues since “work is changing,” the protection for workers should also be changed. I think the appearance of Uber brings many benefits to the transportation industry, such as lower fees for customers and effective competition in the market. I believe that diversity improves the quality of the market. I use Uber a lot when...
