Unemployment a Societal problem February 14, 2012

Unemployment is a societal problem that needs to be address or improved. It has become a family issue where parents are unable to maintain their family both financial and morally. Divorce rates are high and children are growing more rebellious. Youth are resulting into gang involvement and drugs peddling to meet that need. For example, Juvenile correctional facility where I presently work consists of kids that are from these broken homes and families due to unemployment. These kids attitude toward educational interest for genuine qualification to our society has decrease.

Unemployment comes with low self esteem, loss of benefits and access to healthcare. Most unemployed individuals are not qualified for unemployment benefits therefore, leaving the parent that is employed responsible for both health benefits and financial support. Employers pay rates are so low nowadays thus, requiring a second job to sustain the family. For example, I’m a full time student with two full time jobs and an unemployed husband. I have to maintain my job not because I love what I do. I do it because of the present situations that I’m faced with. This leaves me burnout with no family time. These are just few of the problems we are faced with as spouses of unemployed individuals. But there is still hope to remove unemployment from our society. Firstly our educational system must be reformed. Vocational subjects must be taught to our students. Stress must be given on manual labor and self employment. In conclusion, the government should place more emphasis on vocational and technical training such as plumbing, mechanics, landscaping and training on how to open and maintain small businesses. Individuals should also be willing to adjust to society demands by enriching his / her knowledge and study new skills. Despite of high rate of unemployment, many jobs go unfilled largely because many of the unemployed lack the skills needed today as a result of technological progress. Therefore, training unemployed citizens become highly motivated and self sufficient will alleviate one of the greatest problems we are faced with today. Knowing that there’s life and hope after unemployment.

Benefits of Children Playing Sports

...Benefits of Children Playing Sports Eng/147 Encouraging children to play sports will enhance their team building skills, understand what commitments are, and will build a child’s confidence. The biggest and most important things that children learn about playing sports are team building skills. It has been generally agreed upon by researchers that sports can promote healthy development. (Holt, Kingsley, & Tink, 2011). It has been been seen through out the years that the majority of jobs in the workforce are looking for people who both know how to lead and follow. When children grow up playing team sports they grow up with the understanding of the importance for teamwork. Commitments are a very important part of not only playing team sports, but also in anything that want to do as they get older. One of the biggest problems that can be seen by the children of today is that when things get tough they just quit. When children grow up with a thought process like this it only hurts them when they get older. Yes, these athletes did use Performance Enhancing Drugs (PED), but a debate has raged on about just how right are we to scrutinize them for those actions and just how inappropriate their actions were? With baseball professionals on both sides arguing how much of an impact they really had on the game. More so, I'd like to ask the question of whether what they had done was actually in a way good for baseball, and whether Performance Enhancing Drugs should even be banned from baseball? Which, I believe they shouldn’t be for numerous reasons. In order to understand just how “not as out of the ordinary” as they were deemed to be the actions of athletes were, we must look into the history of performance enhancement in sports. ...Let Them Play! : Benefits of Sports Briana B. Western Governors University WGU Student ID #: ************ Let Them Play! Childhood sports have been proven to provide multiple developmental benefits to all children involved in such programs. The best way for kids to reap all the benefits of sports participation is to submerse them into a program which offers a positive environment with encouraging coaches who instruct with constructive criticism and work to “minimize negative experiences” (Seefeldt & Ewing, 1996, p.3). Research has shown that children who participate in frequent physical activity, such as sports, experience improved academics, have better mental health, and are less likely to take part in risky health behaviors than their less active counterparts. Dr. Daniels, author of “Interscholastic Sports and the Middle School Student”, finds six main points of interest pertaining to the benefits of and liabilities for children who get involved in sports. Out of the six, four are beneficial, and only two are considered to be liabilities. The four positive characteristics of sports are scholastic achievement, competency, fitness, and self-esteem. Whereas the two negative characteristics are sports injuries, stress and anxiety (as cited by Daniels, 1999, p.2). Although Dr. Daniels doesn’t talk about it in her dissertation, one more benefit of kids getting active is their likelihood to avoid the appearance of evil, in other words they are unlikely...
