Archetypal Development of Spock

...Composition II Section 006 2/15/2015 Archetypal Development of Star Trek’s Spock Spock, at first glance, is simply logical, unemotional and to an extent, without much personality. However his character is significantly developed through the course of episodes 1-14, as well as the rest of the series. Spock has elements of the archetypes of The Seeker as well as The Sage. He, along with the Enterprise crew, explores the unknown, and embraces learning. He also avoids the support of others, contributing to The Seeker archetype. His character contains numerous components of The Sage archetype as well, such as seeking truth and knowledge, intelligence, and being the unfeeling judge; cold, rational and heartless. However, as the show progresses more of his character is revealed. We not only see more of his half human side, but realize that this side of him, part of his heritage and genetics, is his Unhealable Wound. It will always be a part of him, though it’s something that he clearly sees as a flaw. Furthermore, throughout these episodes we see the alternation of Spock and Captain Kirk’s relationship as Mentor-Pupil. Depending on the episode, and in some cases depending on the situation within an episode, their roles in this relationship change. On certain occasions Spock is the mentor towards Kirk, providing him with logic and advice. While on other occasions the roles are reversed, Kirk offering Spock insight into the human psyche as well as appealing to his human side. They have...

A Case for Student Communication in Online Classes

...Read-Only Participants: A Case for Student Communication in Online Classes Robert Thierfelder Grand Canyon University Read-Only Participants: A Case for Student Communication in Online Classes The notion of an online community for learning is a relatively new concept. Understanding of this phenomenon is the essence of this article. The exploration of the interaction between the students has an interesting conclusion. According to Nagel, L.; Blignaut, A. S.; Cronje, J. C. (2006) Beaudoin 2006 says, “The establishment of an online community is widely held as the most important prerequisite for successful course completion and depends on an interaction between a peer group and a facilitator. Online students sometimes engage and learn even when not taking part in online discussions.” (p. 15) It shows that quality interaction between individuals is essential to the success of the student. The article Nagel, L.; Blignaut, A. S.; Cronje, J. C. (2006) concluded that, “Read-only participants disrupt the formation of a virtual community of learners and compromise learning.” (P. 15) this, is an intriguing conclusion. One can now conclude that somewhat absente students, who are not real contributors, interrupt the student body. It can be therefore concluded that student participation by all students within the community, is essential. It would seem that even though the community is on-line and there is no physical interaction, a community developed. In...

Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin

...Name: Instructor: Course: Date: Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin An autobiography is the life history of a person that is written in a book and the history is written by the same person. Autobiography mainly centers its focus on the times and life of the person writing it. The autobiography nature is very subjective and therefore the writer should be able to recall memories promptly so that incorrect and false information should be avoided. Some autobiographies are fictional whereby people write the autobiography as if it were them as seen in some novels. Benjamin Franklin was born January 17,1706 in Boston. He attended school for only 2 years despite his passion for reading. When he was 12 years old, he joined his brother James to become an apprentice at the print shop. He wrote his first newspaper in Boston when he was 15 years. He wrote several letters and finally announced that he was the writer when the letters became a hit. He ran away to Philadelphia at 17 when his brother was furious about his writing (The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin 1). He was amongst the naissance fathers of the United States. He was an inventor, a representative, a scientist, a principal writer and above all, he was a theorist. He loved doing experiments and this was well shown in the experiments he did regarding power and lightning after experimenting on kites in an event of a lightning storm. He also published “Poor Richard’s Almanac’’ and the Pennsylvania Gazette...

His father, Josiah Franklin, was a tallow chandler who married twice, and of his seventeen children Benjamin was the youngest son. His schooling ended at ten, and at twelve he was bound apprentice to his brother James, a printer, who published the "New England Courant." To this journal he became a contributor, and later was for a time its nominal editor. But the brothers quarreled, and Benjamin ran away, going first to New York, and thence to Philadelphia, where he arrived in October, 1723. He soon obtained work as a printer, but after a few months he was induced by Governor Keith to go to London, where, finding Keith's promises empty, he again worked as a compositor till he was brought back to Philadelphia by a merchant named Denman, who gave him a position in his business. On Denman's death he returned to his former trade, and shortly set up a printing house of his own from which he published "The Pennsylvania Gazette," to which he contributed many essays, and which he made a medium for agitating a variety of local reforms. In 1732 he began to issue his famous "Poor Richard's Almanac" for the enrichment of which he borrowed or composed those pithy utterances of worldly wisdom which are the 2 basis of a large part of his...

Colonists and the Revolutionary War

...But once they started fighting in the war for independence from Great Britain, once again as I said in the beginning, some of those feelings probably went away. Which in cases war sometimes does that, for example; the bombing of Pearl Harbor (I know it’s not a war, but it was the start of one) And even though during that time we were struggling, it created an immense unity. Just like the revolution did for the colonies. That struggle they endured helped their dream of being free from great Britain strive. And since none of them could have done it alone, it was imperative that the colonies worked together, forgetting about their differences and any hatchet (just like in the French and Indian war). So to get the colonies more united Benjamin franklin created a cartoon named “join or die” which was published in Philadelphia in 1754 (doc. a). Granted the cartoon was made specifically for the French and Indian war, im pretty sure they used it for the revolution too. The cartoon depicts the thirteen colonies as a broken snake. This in some way, got people to join the war; and lead them to victory. As a result of being victorious in the French and Indian war, colonists felt as if they could start their own nation and also expand territory. Since Great Britain was three-thousand miles away, and the American colonies had somewhat of a lax British rule for an extended period of time. The colonists started to experiment with their own form of democracy. All of this combined gave...

...Dear Neville Longbottom, Chicago is much different from North Dakota, I have never seen this many buildings before and riding on a train for the first time was very exciting. The buildings are so tall and gigantic its hard to picture it in my head but also difficult to describe. I am currently staying at an hotel located at 63rd and Wallace. I was able to attend the opening ceremony of the Chicago World's Fair, and boy it was crowded. I have never seen this many people gathered in one place. President Grover Cleveland was also at the fair and pressed the button signaling the opening of the Chicago World's Fair. The one thing that surprised me the most was this ride called the Ferris Wheel. I have never seen anything like it before, it is like a big wheel that spins in a circle and you can ride in it. For every person that road in the Ferris Wheel they received a free sample of Cracker Jack, which was weird version of popcorn. The second day of the fair I was interested in seeing a show called Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show which was located right next to the fair. A lot of people attended the show, and it was worth the money I spent. I also visited the Manufactures and Liberal Arts Building which had many sorts of art. The ones that really caught my attention were the exotic art which seemed to be very popular. I also got to visit a very unique invention called the clasp locker. It is suppose to change the way we close things like on clothes. Their were far to many extraordinary...

An Analysis of the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin

...An Analysis of the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin This analysis will strive to show that, this work by Benjamin Franklin was a unified work even with the disjointed parts of it. The span of time in which it was written was interrupted . Which meant that important aspects of his life was missing. Many feel that this detracts from the effectiveness of the book, just as many feel it adds to the overall theme. This is a work of memories put to paper, for this is Franklin’s life. This analysis aims to show clearly, that this work is effective and relevant today as it was when it was written. Benjamin Franklin wrote his own epitaph when he was but twenty-two years old, he often wondered what his legacy would be. He wrote that after his death his body would be like, “Like The Cover of an Old Book / Its Contents torn Out” the “Contents will Appear once More / In a New and More Elegant Edition, Revised and Corrected By The Author”. (Benjamin and Deborah Franklin; 1790) Franklin was taking measure of his life, by comparing his life to books and his body to the binding, To think that he is talking about his Autobiography and not Heaven would be a logical assumption. He claims to be recollecting his life because he can not relive it. He fully intended to leave the world a work that was unified. Life itself had a say in this work in progress, and this proved to be the disjointing factor to the unity...

Benjamin Franklin

...Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17, 1706, in Boston, Massachusetts, into a devoted Puritan household. (The Puritans were a religious group that stood against the practices of the Church of England.) In 1683 his family had left England and moved to New England in search of religious freedom. Franklin's father was a candlemaker and a mechanic, but, his son said, his "great Excellence lay in a sound Understanding, and solid Judgment." Franklin also praised his mother, who raised a family of thirteen children. Young Franklin was not content at home. He received little formal schooling and by age eleven went to work making candles and soap at his father's shop. However, he hated this trade—especially the smell. Franklin eventually left his father's shop and went to work for his brother James, who was the printer of a Boston newspaper. While learning the business Franklin read every word that came into the shop and was soon writing clever pieces that criticized the Boston establishment. He loved to read and even became a vegetarian in order to save money to buy books. When authorities imprisoned James for his own critical articles, Benjamin continued the paper himself. In 1723 at age seventeen Franklin left home and moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By this time Franklin had begun to embrace the ideas of such Enlightenment thinkers as the physicist Sir Isaac Newton (1642–1727) and the philosopher John Locke (1632–1727). The Enlightenment, which began in the sixteenth century...

Road to Revolution

...Another example of unification during the road to revolution was the Boston Tea party. The Boston Tea party was a significant event, because it was one of the first times the colonists rebelled as one. When the tea act was passed, many people became belligerent. A tax on tea and other regulations caused this rebellion. So colonists boarded ships and dumped out the tea from the boats and trashed them. This sent a message to Great Britain that the colonists are very angry with what has been going on. The colonists started to become stronger after this. These events easily aided the fact that colonists tried to unite. On the other hand, loyalists played a major role in holding back unification. In 1754 The Albany Plan of Union was mad by Benjamin Franklin, a well known patriot. This plan of union was proposed during the French and Indian war, it stated that all the...
