Assignment No.3
“Better a consistently applied mediocre strategy, than a series of ad hoc brilliant strategies.”
Introduction to strategic planning
To achieve certain strategically valuable results, specific actions are required to be planned and acted upon by an organisation or an individual. What inputs are made by the management of an organisation define the expected outputs. Steiner, George A. (2010) in his book explains that strategic planning is indissolubly mixed with field of management these days and is not regarded as a separate process. Managers focus has largely shifted from ‘operations only’ to ‘strategize and operate’ philosophy (Steiner, 2010).
However, organisations are in a state of dilemma over the concept of effective strategy implementation (Grimshaw, et al., 2004). Some believe in single strategical approach that is consistent with one pre-planned scheme which slowly adapts to the environment; is most effective, while others point of view is that; to survive in this competitive market environment one has to adopt to series of ad hoc brilliant strategies because it can provide their business cutting edge over the others (Pietersen, 2002). I believe that both the strategies has a role to play in achieving desired strategical outcomes. What is important is that they fit right in the current environment and are implemented in a risk free manner.
Changes in theories of Strategic planning
When strategic planning was modernised in 1950s, large scale companies were the ones that adopted it first (Godet, 2000). They were not part of the current strategies but were running in the background and were known as long term plans. As the idea matured, smaller companies started to adopt them as well and with time it became of part of the plan for most of the companies. Nowadays market is different, it is fast paced and quickly changing, hence strategic

...NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FACULTY OF COMMERCE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS EMBA MARKETING MANAGEMENT Prepared by Mrs O Gwate-Hall 2012 EMBA MARKETING MANAGEMENT MODULE 1. THE MARKETING CONCEPT Business philosophy has experienced three major shifts during the history of commerce in the United States. It has moved from a production orientation to a sales orientation to the current consumer orientation. Each of these philosophies has reflected the economic environment of its time. From the early years of the country into the late 1920s, businesses had limited production capacity and continuous demand for their products. Under those circumstances, it was inevitable that the prevailing philosophy would be "produce as much as you can and it will sell." Business goals based on that belief naturally focused on production. Marketing concerns were limited to order taking and product distribution. With the introduction of mass production in the late 1800s, the gap between production and the demand for goods and services began to narrow. By the 1930s, production capacity had caught up with and, in many areas, exceeded demand. In order to maintain or regain production and sales levels, businesses adopted a sales oriented philosophy. This philosophy held that "if...

Momentum Effect

...the impression that everything they undertake succeeds effortlessly, as if they’re being carried along by a tailwind that increases their efficiency and propels them on to exceptional growth.1 Some hold on to it. Most don’t. Slowly, imperceptibly, the tailwind turns around and the momentum disappears, without anyone quite realizing what has happened. The company is still growing, but not as strongly as before, not as efficiently. Everyone’s maxing out, but it seems like there’s molasses in the works. Sound familiar? Sooner or later, it hits you in the face. Imagine you are meeting up with a senior analyst whose opinion counts with some of your company’s biggest investors. You think you’re on safe ground—after all, your company is doing better than the competition. But the analyst is in full gimlet-eyed, illusion-killing mode. “That’s nothing to crow about,” she says. “Yeah, you’ve got reasonable growth, but it’s nothing exceptional. You’re a safe bet, nothing more. Okay, I might tell my mom to buy, but 3 The Momentum Effect then she’s happy with inflation plus one. The way we see it, you’re really grinding it out. We reckon the strain’s getting harder, too. There’s no impetus—no momentum.” Words like that can really take the gloss off a day. The next time you gather your team, you don’t congratulate them on beating their targets—you want more. Sure, our results are up, you say, but that’s not enough—where’s the impetus? When are we going to do something exceptional? With...
