It has 741 stores nationally, including 45 BI-LO Supermarkets that also stock Coles private label brands, and more than 100,000 employees. Coles was founded by George James (G.J.) Coles when what was called the "Coles Variety Store" opened on 9 April 1914 in Smith Street in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood. Expansion to more stores occurred and the chain was regarded as leaders in providing value to Australian shoppers (G. J. Coles learned the retail trade working for his father's "Coles Store" business at Wilmot, Tasmania between 1910 and 1913). Coles' interest in food retailing was spurred in 1958 when it acquired 54 John Connell Dickins grocery stores. It then acquired the Beilby's chain in South Australia in 1959 and 265 Matthews Thompson grocery stores in New South Wales in...

...Looking Beyond The Boundaries – A strategy to gain competitive advantage for the Coles Group of Australia By Aruna Kulatunga MGG9352 Management Processes and Systems. Semester 1, 2007 Looking Beyond The Boundaries – A strategy to gain competitive advantage for Coles Group Executive Summary The Coles Group of Australia has allowed its competitive advantage to slip away to rival Woolworth by failing to differentiate its core strategies and by failing to articulate well the strategies that could have been differentiated. In a bid to gain competitive advantage, this report suggests that the Coles Group should look beyond the company boundaries, extending its value chain to suppliers, partners and customers in a seamless manner, employ process like Total Quality Management and Business Process Reengineering in extending the value chain, bedded in a well structured change management programme and look towards globalisation and franchising along with such counter-intuitive, yet innovative, location strategies such as competitive clustering and saturation marketing to regain its competitive advantage. Page 2 23/10/07 Looking Beyond The Boundaries – A strategy to gain competitive advantage for Coles Group Introduction Strategy gurus Porter (1998, p. 2), Mintzberg (1994), Hamel (1998), Hamel and Prahalad, (1994) Champy and Nohria (1996) and Hammer (quoted in Champy and Nohria, (1996)) agree in principle that in order to meet business needs, specific actions need to be...

Data Collection

...Instrument of Data Many methods exist to collect data, such as questionnaires or surveys, interviews, or tests. Ballard Integrated Managed Services (BIMS) is using the survey approach. The human resources manager devised a survey containing 10 scale-based questions ranging from one to five with one as very negative and five as very positive. Employees circle the answer that closely matches his or her feelings towards the question. Additionally, the human resources manager added four demographic questions that include division, length of employment, gender, and a yes or no response if the employee is a manager or supervisor. BIMS employees 449 people who each received a survey along with his or her bi-weekly paycheck. The survey is anonymous and optional for the employees to participate. The survey is not without flaws. The human resources manager did not consider that one of the 10 questions does not fit into the scale-based method of answering. Inserting a question that asks employees to note number of sick days within a month requires a definitive answer. However, employees are not allowed to write in an answer, they can only select a number between one and five. A question of this nature is confusing and could lead to incomplete data. Because the human resources manager made the survey optional, only 17.3 percent of employees completed the survey. The small percentage of returned surveys will not provide BIMS with a clear understanding of how employees feel or...

Evaluiation of a Geography Fieldwork Study

...Evaluation My results told me basic information about how attractive Stratford is to tourists, but the information we collected was not as informative as I would have liked them to be. The results I got were fairly accurate, but not all of them because a lot of them were based on our opinions which meant that they were subjective. The effect of having incorrect results could effect on how I answer and analyse my main question. If I got the wrong amount of pedestrians for example then, my result for the average amount of people to visit Stratford would be incorrect. So to change how accurate my results were, if I was to do it again I would have more than one person doing the pedestrian and then getting an average from that then doing it two or three times more in the same spot then get another average or we could have compared it with another groups piece of work and get an average from that. Another thing wrong with the pedestrian count was you may miss or double count some of the people walking past us. When we counted people we probably counted people as workers or locals meaning we counted people who weren’t tourists, meaning that our results was correct for our hypothesis.. A way to improve the way we did this to more accurate results is if we went on a day (like a Saturday) then there would be more people there for us to count because then people wouldn’t be at work. We may have also used a digital method to get more accurate results. We could have also recorded which direction...

Comprehension Lesson Plan

...appear to have a solid scientific basis for students to increase comprehension. The first strategy is Comprehension Monitoring which involves students reading text with an aggressive awareness of when they do and don’t understand something. The second strategy is Cooperative Learning, which involves students working on clearly defined reading tasks in small groups or as partners. The third strategy is the Use of Graphic Organizers or Story Maps. This helps display concepts and interrelationships among concepts in text through the use of diagrams. The fourth strategy is Question Answering, which involves students answering questions posed by the teacher, and includes immediate teacher feedback. The fifth strategy is to Generate Questions. This involves teaching students to ask their own questions prior to reading by scanning the text and then having students read the text to answer their questions. The sixth strategy is...

Tv Interview Essay

...Television Interview Report: A Reflective Essay The interview I selected was conducted by Oprah Winfrey (interviewer) of Joel and Victoria Osteen (interviewees) on January 8, 2012 via the Oprah: Next Chapter show. I selected this particular interview as I am a fan of Joel Osteen and typically enjoy Oprah’s interviewing style. While this interview was very entertaining, this was not what I would consider to be a “hard hitting” journalistic interview that delved into any one particular subject. There were really no conflicting views, controversial opinions, or original insights that you could not have learned by either reading one of the many books written by Joel Osteen or observed in prior interviews. This was, however, more of a “feel good” piece that continued the examination of Joel Osteen’s belief’s and character. It is worth noting that while Victoria Osteen is part of this interview, she plays more of a corroborative role by giving additional insight into Joel Osteen as the person. This essay will show Oprah’s safe approach at interviewing and Joel Osteen’s non-controversial response still. The interview was conducted at the Osteen’s home in Houston, Texas. This set a casual and comfortable tone for the interview, but the attire was Sunday formal which maintained the gravity of the subjects. It is unlikely that the Osteen’s would have allowed a risky interviewer to come into their home and by allowing Oprah to do so, helped establish a positive rapport...
