Mother’s New Job and Her Child’s Illness
Introduction
When a mother delivers a health baby and then starts a new job in a manufacturing plant her once healthy baby becomes ill after a few months after starting work at the manufacturing plant. After some discussions with coworkers she is alarmed to find out that another female coworker’s child has had a similar signs of illness. Is there a connection between the mother’s new job and her child’s illness? What factors may have to be addressed and what test would prove this connection if there was one. Secondly, if there was a connection would the mother have a case if it was taken to court. If so why or if not, why not?
Discussion
Chemical and physical agents may affect the conceptus. The effect may result in one or more manifestations: death and/or various types of malformations. Shortly or later after birth several other effects can be observed such as; growth retardation, functional disorders, and certain other effects. These effects are referred to as developmental toxicity (Kacew and Byung-MuLee, 2013). Agents that can be considered teratogenic in humans; radiation, certain infections, nutritional imbalance, and certain drugs, metals and chemicals. Because of the effects of teratogenic toxicants, the history of the mother’s pregnancy would need to be annotated and address during the analysis of the mother and infant. It’s possible the mother could have been exposed to a developmental toxicant prior to the delivery of her child and her new job. As stated some developmental toxins can

Bike Lanes

...even to run everyday errands. Lafayette has a big problem with biking accidents due to a lack of bike lanes around town. Being a college town we are very far behind on being bicycle friendly. We need to add more bicycle lanes around town, add barriers between the cars and bicycles, and spread bicycle awareness. Biking around Lafayette can unfortunately be very dangerous. As of right now there are only two main roads in Lafayette that have a bike lane. Saint Marry Street and Johnston Street and on those two roads the bike lane does not even span the whole road and instead just little parts of the road. When there are not bike lanes on roads, bikers are forced to ride in the motor vehicle lane obeying the same laws as a large car or truck. This can cause many problems to both cars and bicycle riders. Even the fanciest race bicycles cannot keep up with the 45-mile per hour speed limit on most Lafayette roads. When there are no bike lanes, bikes are expected to ride in the regular lane and obey regular traffic laws. This causes a problem due to the amount of vehicles that pile up behind the slow moving bicycle. Once the motor vehicle traffic starts to build up the drivers get very angry and start to drive aggressively. Aggressive driving does not only put other cars in danger, but it especially puts bicycle riders in danger since they are so unprotected from collisions. Besides the fact of the lack of bike lanes, Lafayette’s bike lanes are too small and close to regular traffic...

Cycling

...patient health all at the same time. Together, they may have discovered their answer in a simple piece of engineering able to resolve all of these issues; the bicycle. However, research suggests that American society is not cyclist friendly due to drivers and/or cyclists not always being properly trained. Also, there is a need for bike lanes and laws that require road sharing. For the last five decades, only motorized vehicles have been considered in street designs throughout our country. Driver focused polices, education, and behaviors are an important part of the cycling safety encounter. Revolution in road and cycling infrastructure design is also needed as our population keeps growing. Care needs to be taken and investments made to ensure that everyone has a safe place to travel. In many ways, there has never been a better time to be a bicyclist. If you thought there were more bicyclists on the roads lately, you’d be right. Biking is thriving. The number of cyclists are growing vastly. More and more, people are using bikes to commute to work, schools and stores or simply for the enjoyment and the health benefits that make it fun. It’s cheaper than the price of fuel. The bike should be incorporated by people as a no-nonsense way of getting around in swarming cities. “According to Bill Wilkinson, director of the Bicycle Federation of America, roughly two million people...

Neighborhood Public Policy Assignment

...University of Phoenix I believe that the scenario involved is a public safety issue. In this scenario Marcus Young was hit by a car that was speeding and driven by a teenage boy named by Charles. Marcus rode his bike out form between two cars and was hit by a car. With bicycles being associated with many childhood injuries it fits with being a public safety issue. After this incident the teenager that hit Marcus was let off with what Angie Young felt was a light punishment. It included a loss of his licenses until age 20. Angie felt something more needed to be done to increase the safety of the children in the neighborhood so she wrote a letter to her congress women complaining about the speed limit around her neighborhood. She asked what could be done to lower the speeding cars that come through the neighborhood and it was suggested that she campaign petition to have speed bumps installed on her street. This is a demonstration of how the legislative process can influence public health when a citizen complaints or voices their concern to law makers about an issue that means something to them. Mrs. Young rounded up 500 signatures for the petition which shows that the speeding in this neighborhood is a public safety concern to the Neighborhood citizens. Bicycle and pedestrian safety comes under public safety and many communities have laws that require children to wear personal safety equipment when riding bikes. The role of government in public health care...

Bike Riding

...Sean Mooney TV FILM Bicycle Safety 4/3/12 In making a video on bicycle safety I would start out the video with an example. I would show a reenacted scene of a bicyclist in a dangerous situation, and just what can happen. The example I would use would be one of a bicyclist running a red light. While I am driving I see this happen almost every day, especially in residential neighborhoods. The bicyclist looks around quickly and proceeds through the crosswalk even if the light is red. If we could reenact a similar situation to this I believe it would be effective. I see not only the danger of a direct hit coming from a car that has a green light, but also that of a car turning right. For instance, a car may be behind the bicyclist turning right as soon as the biker decides to dash through the red light resulting in a collision. In a blindsided collision like that the biker could be seriously injured as the car would be accelerating into him. I believe by showing this kind of example to start our video it would not only capture the attention of bicyclists, but that of drivers as well. After a one to two minute reenacted example, we could display some alarming stats on the number of bicyclists hit by cars every year, and the injuries that come with such a collision. We would be drawing their attention in with the example of a biker running a red light and then by showing our audience the stats, we would make them think about how truly dangerous riding a bike incorrectly and...

Diabetes is the leading cause of death for many people. Bicycling will also prevent people from getting cancer. ...worldrenowned Spanish brand “Orbea” bikes and their own design bike models, which are manufactured in China under the firm’s brand-name and sold in the Asia Pacific region. During 2008-11, the firm doubled its sales, even though the global financial crisis had dramatically eroded consumer purchasing power. Vincent Hong, the 25 year old owner of the business, learned from reading a popular magazine (Business Review Weekly) that much of the firm’s recent success may be attributable to cycling becoming a trendy and popular sport in Australia. Browsing the Internet, he decided to briefly cross-check the article with the Retail Cycle Traders Australia Website (RCTA, 2008), from which he found that the trend has continued for at least a decade and that: “Bicycle sales in Australia averaged 795,000 per year for the four years 1998-2001. In the four years since then, bike sales averaged 1,133,000 per year. By comparison, car sales have never reached one million in a year”. This information raised 1 Vincent’s interest in researching the trend further. Perhaps, the car dealer next to his store may cast more light on the trend, he thought. Discussions with the car dealer confirmed the website...

The Use of Bicycles as a Form of Public Transport Should Be Encouraged by the Hong Kong Government

...Even though centuries have passed since the very first bicycle was invented, the popularity of bicycles does not seem to decline with the lapse of time. Not only are they the indispensable means of transportation in most parts of the world, but they also evolved into a recreational sport which plentiful health benefits come along. However, the need for using bicycles for travel in a modern transportation system, especially that of an urban area, has been questioned in recent years with respect to its cost-effectiveness. In this essay, I examine both the benefits and drawbacks of the use of bicycles in public transport and form a brief conclusion based on my stance on this issue. Some advocates argue that cycling can greatly reduce the air pollution in Hong Kong. The air quality in urban areas of Hong Kong is worsening each day due to detrimental emissions and pollutants produced by the heavy traffic volume, which mainly consists of motor vehicles. Hitchcock and Vedrenne (2014) consider bicycles to be promising alternatives for motor vehicles in an effort to improve the air quality of urban areas, since they are low-carbon and human-powered vehicles that produce zero emissions when ridden. Indeed, bicycles are more environmental-friendly than motor vehicles, but its effectiveness in making a difference to the general air quality remains questionable. The findings from the research conducted by Rakowska et al. (2014) imply that reducing the portion of motor vehicles in...

...Issue: breach of contract. Colorado Bicycle Tours & Rental, LLC (CBTR) ordered 75 standard touring class bicycles from BIKE, Inc. (BIKE). The terms and conditions of the purchase are set forth in the contract and accompanying purchase order. Due to a work stoppage over a labor dispute, BIKE’s production of standard touring bicycles was seriously deficient in the months following CBTR’s order placement. Because BIKE was aware of CBTR’s immediate need for bicycles (the contract stated that “time is of the essence”), BIKE shipped 23 discontinued model bicycles, 20 standard touring bicycles and 12 deluxe touring bicycles. While the discontinued bicycles were not to specification, the deluxe bicycles exceeded specifications, although they were invoiced at the same price as the standard bicycles that met specifications. After shipment, but prior to receipt of the bicycles by CBTR, the president of BIKE, Barbara Wilson, personally called Donna Dufresne, CBTR’s purchasing manager, to explain the situation and asked whether the substituted bicycles were acceptable. Dufresne reluctantly ok’d the purchase in a telephone conversation with Wilson. The contract indicated that any material changes to the agreement had to be in writing and agreed to by authorized representatives of the parties. Charlene Smythe, CBTR’s CFO, was the authorized representative of CBTR, while Wilson was BIKE’s authorized representative. When the bicycles were unpacked at CBTR, Smythe was alerted...
