Judge how Volvo Car Corporation integrated the cloud infrastructure into its networks.

The Volvo Car Corporation integrated the cloud infrastructure into its networks to capture data from Volvo vehicles to help build better cars and to help the customer have a better experience. Data is now being captured for use within the vehicle itself, and increasingly, for transmission via the cloud back to the manufacturer. At Volvo, those huge volumes streamed into a centralized analysis hub, the Volvo Data Warehouse, alongside data from customer relationship systems, dealership systems, and product development and design systems (Global Intelligence for the CIO, 2011).

The Volvo Car Corporation wanted to create an effective marketing strategy to tie in with the movie trilogy Twilight franchise by creating an interactive game that would engage the global community. The idea for the game was that users could play to win a new Volvo XC60 car. However, the company's existing technology infrastructure could not provide the scalability required to fulfill the vision, and expanding it would be cost-prohibitive. After consulting with Microsoft Gold Certified Partner LBi to evaluate options, Volvo selected the Windows Azure cloud-computing platform (Microsoft, 2011). In an effort to address, its needs for a cost-effective infrastructure that provided the ability to quickly scale up to handle a high volume of traffic and that would also serve a global audience with high performance, Volvo chose to implement a cloud-based solution. After surveying the landscape of cloud services providers, LBi recommended that Volvo use Windows Azure, which is the development, service hosting, and service management environment for the Windows Azure platform. It provides developers with on-demand compute, storage, and bandwidth, and a content distribution network to host, scale, and manages web applications through Microsoft data centers (Microsoft, 2011).

There are several factors to the diagnostic read- out that Volvo has to use in order for this information to be considered “useable data.” Diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) are generated when the vehicle presents some sort of fault, it is then stored in the engine control unit (ECU). The next step is where Volvo took the next in order to transfer data in knowledge. Prior to the hard drive era, people logged data on paper and eventually stored it in a locker room. With so much data at hand, it was merely impossible for one to collate all of it into a structured format. Besides, analysis of this same very data was very unlikely to happen or likely to happen in a timeline that did not suit its purpose.
