Big Family vs. Small Family

Parents everywhere have to make the best decisions for their children. One of those decisions is the size of the family. Parents have to choose what they think will be better for the kids and themselves. I believe that larger families are better than small families. I choose big families, for a number of reasons, including building social skills, responsibility, independence, and assertiveness.
There is a growing trend in the world to have a small family rather than a large one. Why? Because of money. A family’s financial situation is closely related to the size of the household. The cost for a small family is way less than for a large family. As a result, children of small families can afford to go to better schools, or explore expensive hobbies and interests. Studies show that those children have higher IQs and academic achievement, but they also show that children from large families tend to have better social skills. If I were to choose between a high IQ and social skills, I’d choose the social skills. It makes sense that people from big families have better social skills because with several siblings, kids can get feedback on how they act and have more opportunities to interact with others in general.
My next point is on responsibility. Parents of large families don’t have as much time and energy to give as much support to their children as parents of small families, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Children with many siblings and less resources to go around learn personal responsibility at an early age. They learn the importance of sharing and the value of work and things they own. They won’t grow up to be spoiled kids or expect that people owe them things. Being an only child is often associated with egoism and irresponsibility.
Also, in smaller families with parents that can spend a lot of time supporting, encouraging, and giving their kids their

The Fight Against Big Stores, Who Is the Real Bully?

...The fight against big stores, who is the real bully? ENG122: English Composition II Lucinda Ramon Instructor Iris Chao April 15, 2013 The fight against big stores, who is the real bully?             Chain stores are often surrounded by criticism for destroying smaller stores which seems an ironic assessment considering the consumers themselves play such a vital role in their success. Not much is ever mentioned about the smaller stores that thrived as a result of the big stores. Big stores (chain stores) are the result of when a small store (independent store) becomes successful and is able to expand into multiple locations. They are successful for many reasons that are important to customers and smaller stores can benefit greatly by operating next to a big store. Testimony from small store owners and studies show that big stores have the potential to be a positive addition to any community including the surrounding smaller stores.             Many studies have been performed showing evidence that small stores that are located near big stores have experienced increased sales as a result of an increased traffic flow of customers from the larger store. Purdue University conducted a study consisting of 101 entrepreneurs between the times of 2004-2006 asking why they decided to start a business.  (Goessling, 2007) Small business owners learned of the different opportunities for small businesses afforded by big stores. One such opportunity is for small businesses to advertise...

...outsourcing the food you eat? Some big companies have been using outside suppliers to produce food sold under their name brands, and this has created a great debate among consumers, grocers, farmers and the companies themselves. For companies, outsourcing food production allows them to sell more product at a lower price. For consumers, outsourcing food becomes a problem when it takes weeks to track down the original source of tainted peanut butter, meat or spinach, leading to continued recalls. Genetically Modified Food The debate over genetically modified foods, or GMOs as they're sometimes called, has been raging for years. Genetically modified foods are food products, such as meat, corn, tomatoes or soybeans, that have been genetically modified or engineered to produce a better crop or animal. Many crops and animals are modified to become more disease-resistant or to grow bigger or more productive. This allows big companies who create genetically modified animals or crops, such as Monsanto, to produce more product to sell to consumers. However, questions have been raised all over the world about the short- and long-term safety of using GMO-based products. Some European nations have even gone so far as to ban certain genetically modified foods, according to Treehugger.com. Big Business vs. the Small Farmer When you think of the farms that grow your food, you probably think of the small mom-and-pop type family farm operations you see on television...

Corporation vs Small Business

...The Corporations Role in Small Business Success Your Name Here English 122: Composition II Aimee Garten October 14, 2013 The Corporations Role In Small Business Success Devastation. This describes the state I was in when I walked into my favorite coffee shop and was notified by the owners that they would be closing the doors for good at the end of the business day. I had been going to Donut Connection, a small family owned business, for about a year. I had been loyal to Starbucks since my coffee drinking days began, but this place came highly recommended and it was right on my way to work. I was quickly enamored with their amazing customer service, and I have to admit, the coffee was better than Starbucks. As all good things come to an end, the Donut Connection had to close down for financial reasons. This was a shock to most of the regular customers and myself because the establishment was jam-packed every morning. But this poses the question: Are large corporations, such as Starbucks, responsible for the failure of small businesses? Because consumers appreciate great customer service, and small businesses dominate the economy, corporations should be looked at as nothing more than competition as small businesses are responsible for their own success or failure. A major reason why consumers shop small businesses is the family feeling they experience as well as superior customer service. People appreciate going into a business and being greeted by name and also knowing...

Gran Torino Film Analysis

...Part A 1. Story and Plot Story and Plot differ from one another. The total world of the story is made out of “diegetic elements”. These elements (such as characters, events, surroundings, sounds and objects) create the world in which the story takes place. In a television series as Baantjer, there are a lot of diegetic elements which the audience can relate to, whereas in the world of Disney’s Wall-E, there are diegetic elements which the audience can’t relate to because it is a whole other world than we know. A story consists of two types of diegetic elements. Firstly, there are elements that are presented on the screen. Secondly, there are elements which are not presented on the screen, but where the viewer (audience) refers to as something that has happened (presumed and inferred elements). Besides diegetic elements, there are also nondiegetic elements. These elements include for example voice-overs, background music and titles and credits and are part of a plot, but not part of a story. A plot consists, beside the diegetic elements of the world of the story presented on the screen, also of nondiegetic material. Apart from (non)diegetic elements, the story also differs from the plot because of the chronological order. Within a story, every event happens in chronological order, but within a plot, events do not necessarily have to appear in chronological order. In Gran Torino the difference between the story and the plot is immediately visible at the very first scene: Walt...

Daphne Du Maurier's Short Story 'The Birds'

...Daphne du Maurier's short story “The Birds” (published in 1952) and Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 movie The Birds are both captivating pieces and share many themes and conflicts. However, the original storyline and characters written by Maurier are lost in its transition to the big screen. Hancock’s take on the story is much more geared to frighten and thrill an audience as he removes everything but the core themes of the story. In summary, the short novel “The Birds” is about a small family that lives near the sea shore in England. As the East wind blows it brings winter with it, and large flocks of a variety of birds. The birds act apart from their usually instincts and start attacking people during the tide changes. The movie, however, follows...

Let us begin with the size of property you are looking for. Apartments can vary in size, they are built to please families and single people. Satirical Techniques Used In A Horror Film

...FAMILY TIME combines dark comedy with a horror tale. The premise is somewhat familiar in regards to the idea that a deranged man terrorizes several victims. Some die and some live. There are solid themes about survival and family. Some of the techniques that make for a good horror film are used, such as an isolated setting, being cut off from communication, the use of darkness, and grisly murders. However, because this type of story has been done before, to be successful, the story truly requires a strong hook and it requires unique characters. While some of the dark humor is appreciated, the script would benefit from more development. First, the story needs to open with a scene that sets the tone. This could be the backstory or some other...
