A Man-Machine Interface

...Alfred J Haines Eng 215 Dr. Melissa Olt Research Paper Dec. 18, 2011 Abstract The Man Machine Love-Hate relationship is examined and the eventual blending of the two to create an augmented form of reality. The problems with such a task are not only with the hardware but with the Human sense of spiritual bonding to the past. A past imbued with fear, pain and hardship, a meta-ethnic past that some long for and believe to have been a simpler time. The Personal Computer will someday become an invisible extension of our minds with no peripherals nor external hardware to obstruct the users from achieving their creative goals. From its beginning mechanical computers have frightened Humans who believed that they would be replaced by these thinking machines. The human beings mechanical mobility has evolved out of our spirits need to interact with the universe and the next step, the one that frees mankind from physical limitations will be the use of machines that will be ubiquitous, in effect, working as natural extensions of the body. The continuous innovations in electronics are making more and more components ubiquitous. The convergence of man and machine requires that computers become an integral part of the human body. The hurdles are many and those in opposition of such a world are afraid that these changes can only come about with the sacrifice of the soul. The last huddle that will stand in mans way of a true Man-Machine interface may well be one of posed by the...

...his favorite sport. We had to make many adjustments and decisions as we went through this journey. His journey included his wheelchair, several pairs of crutches, his cane and his prosthetic leg, and now he walks unaided. Through my brothers story it has showed to me and many people around him how much we take for granted. Just by having a leg removed can change so much in your life. Also you never understand how important something is to you until it is really gone. By seeing how much one person can do in just 3 years I have been inspired to research about amputees and people with disabilities. In this paper I will be looking at other ways people have lost their limbs and how much everything has improved historically. Every amputee has a different story on how they lost their limb including cancer, accidents, disease, or diabetes. {VISUAL AID} The website limbs4life had many inspirational stories about how some people lost their limbs. One story that really caught my attention was about Scott Reardon, age 12. Scott was working on his farm when his shoelace got stuck in the tractor causing him to have his right leg amputated right below the knee. Before his accident he was involved in sports and was into water skiing. Because of the support he had from his family Scott was skiing 6 months after his surgery. Scott has now competed in two World Championships where he has placed in the top three. Also about 6 months after Tyler’s surgery he was able to get back up on...

The task requires you to address a short fictional case. In addressing the assignment topic you must draw explicitly on the chapters and articles noted on QMPlus. You do not need to do reading beyond the module reading list and you should not do any research into the industry, market, product, etc (just make any assumptions clear). Assignment Brief and Backstory You have been lucky enough to secure an internship at Once Dodgy Consultants LLP (ODC), the most prestigious and expensive of all strategic management consultancies, but also a very publicly spirited firm that spends most of its income from commercial activities helping charities and social enterprises reduce poverty and illness. One day, you are working in your cubicle and sense a disturbance in the office, your colleagues rapidly start to disappear muttering “CEO” and “MBC file”. You look up and are surprised to see the CEO of the consultancy leave the elevator and head to your divisional manager’s office, a red file marked “MBC BRIEF TOP SECRET” held distastefully at at arm’s length. The CEO leaves shortly afterwards. You see your divisional manager look forlornly around the office, note you as the only remaining member...

Technology

...Inspired Technologies (Boca Raton, FL: CRC Press) pp 1–552). This field, which is known as biomimetics, offers enormous potential for inspiring new capabilities for exciting future technologies. There are numerous examples of biomimetic successes that involve making simple copies, such as the use of fins for swimming. Others examples involved greater mimicking complexity including the mastery of flying that became possible only after the principles of aerodynamics were better understood. Some commercial implementations of biomimetics, including robotic toys and movie subjects, are increasingly appearing and behaving like living creatures. More substantial benefits of biomimetics include the development of prosthetics that closely mimic real limbs and sensory-enhancing microchips that are interfaced with the brain to assist in hearing, seeing and controlling instruments. A review is given of selected areas that were inspired by nature, and an outlook for potential development in biomimetics is presented. Introduction The term biomimetics, which was coined by Otto H Schmitt (Schmitt 1969), represents the...

The last generation to be unaugmented. The last generation to be intellectually alone. The last generation to be limited by our bodies. We are the first. The first generation to be augmented. The first generation to be intellectually together. The first generation to be limited only by our imaginations. We stand both before and after, balancing on the razor edge of the Event Horizon of the Singularity. That this sublime juxtapositional tautology has gone unnoticed until now is itself remarkable. We're so exquisitely privileged to be living in this time, to be born right on the precipice of the greatest paradigm shift in human history, the only thing that approaches the importance of that reality is finding like minds that realize the same, and being able to make some connection with them.
