Information Systems and Software Applications
Various organization departments exist within a company, including accounting, finance, human resources, marketing, and management. Each organizational department uses information systems in one capacity or another. According to Rainer and Turban (2008), "information resources is a general term that includes all the hardware, software (information systems and applications), data, and networks in an organization ("2.4. Managing Information Resources"). We will look at an applications and systems that can be used within a company for management, accounting, and human resources.
A popular application in business management is SAP, which stands for Systems, Applications and Products in Data Processing. Founded by former IBM employees in 1972, SAP is used in many avenues of business management. The original SAP idea was to provide customers the ability to interact with a common database for a comprehensive range of applications ("Searchsap.com", n.d.). SAP allows companies to use one database to run all of their day to day programs and applications. My company has a client who is transitioning to SAP. They will use it to schedule their production, send their shipping needs to my company, and receive their freight invoices and accruals from my company. SAP will enable them to enter their information one time and that information will cascade to all necessary parties.
An application in the accounting world is JD Edwards. JD Edwards allows companies to access consolidated financial data online in multiple currencies and languages. It also allows companies to view where transactions originate as well as two ledgers simultaneously to do variance analysis online ("List of Accounting Software", n.d.). My company uses JD Edwards to access and track its financial data, specifically invoices to and payments from clients…...
