The book Black Texans, provides an insightful and detailed timeline of African Americans and the many injustices that occurred in the state of Texas. The book spans from the year 1528 to 1995, covering blacks as far back as the first slave brought to the Americas, Estevan, to contemporary times. As well as being immensely detailed, Black Texans is organized in a chronological manner and is written at a moderate pace which ensures that nothing is overlooked or any period is rushed.
During the years 1866 to 1900, the emancipation proclamation was just passed and the Civil War had concluded. Slaves were technically free, but they still faced the obstacle of leaving, which for the most part did not happen. Previous slave-owners adopted the cyclical system of sharecropping which ensured a perpetual debt that could never be paid off. This resulted in many African Americans not leaving their previous conditions due to having no other options. Another obstacle soon faced after the proclamation was the local legislative laws that unjustly restricted freedmen and ostracized them from society. The terms “Nigger” and the word ape were still used to vividly describe freedmen. These legislative rulings inhibited freedmen from owning land or testifying in court. As far as advances there were not any major ones, but since the emancipation freed …show more content…
This era was defined by feelings of hostility and acts of discrimination. Often coined the the term “Jim Crow South”, the intention was to inhibit the advancement and assimilation of African Americans into society. This included southern states such as Texas going around and finding loopholes in federal law that prohibited discrimination and racism. These states found ways to disenfranchise Blacks by using tactics such as white primaries, literacy tests, and poll taxes. Another obstacle African Americans faced was

Yellow Journalsim: How Media Involvement Provokedthe Slave Revolt Panic of 1860

...noon, church was over and most of the sweltering residents had sought refuge from the sun and heat inside their homes or offices. Around 1:10 P.M. the scream of “Fire” reverberated through the streets of downtown followed by the rush of half-clothed citizens rushing to see smoke in a two-story building on Commerce Street. Fire swept north to consume a warehouse and then to the Dallas Herald office-quickly engulfing Dallas’ entire business section.[1] Extensive media coverage of the July 1860 fires in Dallas potentially incited a heightened fear of slave revolts throughout Texas and promoted the formation of vigilante groups. Newspapers served as a medium to spread fear, rumors, and ultimately, panic and violence among white Texans. Yellow Journalism presented exaggerated headlines and stories that linked natural disasters and catastrophes to current fears of the day. The nation was undergoing a sectional split over the issue of slavery and white southerners were on the alert for potential slave plots and uprisings that were spurred by northern abolitionists and Unionists. The Dallas fires were just the sort of sensationalism that could garner increased support of anti-Union constituents and promote the Democratic Party agenda. Letters about the fires written by the Dallas Herald’s editor, Charles R. Pryor, originally published in the Dallas Herald, Houston’s Weekly Telegraph, Marshall’s Texas Republican, and Austin’s Texas State Gazette, were reprinted...

Death Penalty in Texas

...There are many legal and cultural explanations for why Texas executes far more people than any other state and is doing so at a pace that has no parallel in the modern era of the death penalty in the U.S. What follows is a summary of the analyses. Texas has become ground zero for capital punishment. Between 1976 (when the Supreme Court lifted its prohibition on the death penalty) and 1998 Texas executed 167 people. Next in rank was Virginia which executed 60 during the same period. (**my note** as of today, Texas has executed 237 individuals, and Virginia has executed 80) Why do capital murder cases proceed through the Texas state court system with a speed unimaginable in other parts of the country? Brent Newton, in an article entitled "Capital Punishment: Texas Could Learn a Lot from Florida,"1argues that there are three procedures unique to the state's judicial system that enable it to execute convicted murderers with astonishing frequency: 1. Texas' appellate judges are elected to office and hence serve according to the pleasure of the public. Not surprisingly, they require a record of toughness on criminals in order to win re-election. Also, there are many indications that elected appellate judges generally are of a lesser quality than their appointed counterparts in other states. Newton even claims that these elected judges do not carefully consider the complexities of each specific death penalty case. As evidence, Newton argues that "[e]specially during the past...

... This report touches upon policy questions relating to all these conceptualizations of ERCOT: as an organization, as an energy market, and as the area of Texas with competitive electric suppliers. To distinguish between these meanings, the term “ERCOT” will be used whenever practicable to refer to the organization, “the ERCOT region” will be used to refer to deregulated areas of the state, and “ERCOT market” will be used to describe the wholesale energy market within the ERCOT region. The reader should note that the Texas Public Utility Commission typically has responsibility for setting the highest level ERCOT market policies, while the ERCOT organization oversees grid operations. Lyndon Johnson

...President Kennedy had just been assassinated; a country was mourning its president, a president who had brought hope to end segregation, a president who was handsome and charismatic. A completely different personality took the office and was prepared to win the American citizens’ trust and confidence. Lyndon B. Johnson was this man. The media perceived him as a vulgar Texan and rough around the edges, he was determined to make dramatic changes in the country’s reform laws. President Lyndon Johnson was a unique president who had had the unique experience of being a minority and coming from an impoverished background. According to Whitehouse, “Johnson was born on August 27, 1908, in central Texas, not far from Johnson City, which his family had helped settle. He felt the pinch of rural poverty as he grew up, working his way through Southwest Texas State Teachers College (now known as Texas State University-San Marcos); he learned compassion for the poverty of others when he taught students of Mexican descent.” Because President Johnson understood the needs of impoverished people in the United States, he wasted no time before implementing laws that provided financial and educational support for communities that needed it the most. Some of the most accessed and important programs, which set the United States apart from other countries, were established as reforms in Lyndon Johnson’s presidential term. President Lyndon Johnson was an enforcer of the humanities, he fought for...

Case Study

...Chapter 1 ETHICS & BUSINESS ETHICS AN INTRODUCTION TO ETHICS Ethics is not a recent discovery. Over the centuries philosophers in their struggle with human behavior have developed different approaches to ethics, each leading to different conclusion. The word “Ethics” which is coined from the Latin word ‘Ethics’ and Greek word ‘ethikos’ pertains to character. Ethics is thus said to be the science of conduct. As a matter of fact it deals with certain standard of human conduct and morals. The field of ethics involves systematizing, defending and recommending concepts of right and wrong behavior. Ethics is a mass of moral principles or set of values about what is right or wrong, true or false, fair or unfair, proper or improper, what is right is ethical and what is wrong is unethical. MEANING AND DEFINITION OF ETHICS Peter F. Drucker writes- “There is only one ethics, one set of rules of morality, one code that of individual behavior in which the same rules apply to everyone alike.” Philip Wheel Wright says- “Ethics is the branch of philosophy which is the systematic study of selective choice, of the standards of right and wrong and by which it may ultimately be directed.” Swami Vivekananda has set the tone for ethics. He says- “Supreme oneness is the rationale of all ethics and morality. Ethics cannot be derived from the mere sanction to any personage. Some eternal principle of truth has the sanction of ethics. Where is the eternal sanction to be found except...

Apart from this, particular emphases are given to the special conflicts arising from the relationship between managers and shareholders in companies with large ownership diffusion, the issue of managerial entrenchment and the link between firm value and corporate governance. Generally, those journalists do a competent job of reporting on the prospect’s record. In the case of Governor George W. Bush, Texas reporters had written numerous stories about his failed businesses in the oil patch, the dubious land grab and questionable funding behind a new stadium for Bush’s baseball team, the Texas Rangers, and his various political contradictions and hypocrisies while serving in Austin. Every year when football season ends, coaches get fired and new coaches get hired. And because every team needs a head coach, there is precisely one job at each team and that job has to be filled—quickly. Consider the National Football League. Every team wants to make the playoffs, so that becomes the critical measure of success. The day after the regular season ends is known as Black Monday, and most firings take place that day or a few days after. Of course, not all teams failing to make the playoffs fire their coach. Sometimes a team has a long history of success, and one bad year is considered an aberration. In other cases, a team is in the midst of rebuilding, so expectations are low to begin with. At the end of the 2013 season, seven head coaches were fired. So...
