The general perception of men and women differ in many ways. Men have more masculine, stronger bodies, compared to women’s curvy slender bodies. The public thinks of men as more mentally and emotionally sound. They also see men as the more competitive gender, since they have all of the previous qualities. It is said that men have better ways of firing their team up in comparison to women. They are more likely to use the power of words to their advantage as a way of inspirational coaching. Since most men that coach have most likely played in their sport, they have a greater, broader knowledge of the in’s and out’s of the game. Women however, are more intuit with players emotions and have a better understanding of their player’s needs. This can be good for connecting on a personal level with the team and building relationships and respect for one another. Whereas men, don’t have this keen sense that is very important in being a good coach. There are varying reasons of why women aren’t regarded as highly in coaching compared to men. Some, more apparent than others; are what I will focus on in this paragraph. Men are seen as the more superior gender. They assert their physical, mental, and emotional dominance over their teams. This can be observed in coaches giving their hair-raising speeches at half time or the coach that calls an onside kick to begin the second half. Men in my opinion are seen as more innovative thinkers and willing to take the shot or risk at winning. Men are seen as the brain of the game; they understand fundamentals and technique. You cant be a coach and not be a risk taker. For men it’s not about the game or the glory, it’s the challenge.
This perception of women is in my mind the ultimate deterrent. Many women either leave the field or never enter to begin with. Title IX also has lots to do with women not entering the career field………..(statistics)…….. Besides the obvious reasons that most people think of for women not coaching, there are some less obvious reasons that I would like to bring to your attention. The team itself can be a determining factor of which gender coaches the team. Both boys and girls, men and women, see the previous perceptions the same way.…….. Other causes can be the home life of women. Lots of women are the caretakers of the household; yet another perception of women. They have a family to care for and look after and it causes them to take time away from coaching. Player and administrations want full participation and devotion when it comes to their sports. Like it or not, but maternity leave can lead to the questioning of a women’s availability to the team. Even if they are their they will most likely receive a pay cut for this vary reason………………………………
