There was once a man who was ship-wrecked and stranded on an island. Every day he prayed asking God to send someone to rescue him, but to his disappointment, no one ever came.
Months passed and this man learned how to survive on the island. During this time, he accumulated things from the island and stored them in a hut that he constructed. One day after hunting for food and returning back to his hut, much to his dismay he saw that his hut was on fire along with everything else he owned!
All of his possessions were going up in smoke! The only thing he had left were the clothes on his back. Initially he was in shock, and then he was consumed with anger and rage!
In his fury he threw a fist into the air and began cursing God and yelling, “God, how could you let this happen to me? I’ve been praying everyday for months about being rescued and no one has come, and now everything that I have is on fire! How could you do to this to me! Why did you let this happen?”
Later the man was on his hands and knees weeping heavily when he happened to look up and catch sight of a ship coming in his direction. The man was rescued and as they were heading back to civilization the man asked the captain, “How were you able to find me?”
The captain responded, “We were voyaging across the ocean when we noticed on the horizon a column of smoke going up. We decided to go check it out and when we did, that’s when we found you!”

A Blessing in Disguise

...English 101 student Michael Mitchell English 101 27 March 2013 A Blessing in Disguise My family had planned a trip to telluride, Colorado, for spring break. I had been anticipating it for months and it finally came. We packed the car with all of our suitcases and strapped our skis and snowboards to the top of the car. I hopped in the car, put on my headphones, and got prepared for the long journey that awaited. We drove a total of seven hours on roads that snaked through mountains and roads that were long, flat, and looked as if they had no end. As we started getting closer to Colorado I started seeing snow on the side of the road and began fantasizing about shredding down the mountain on my board. I couldn’t wait to launch off the huge jumps I had heard about and try new tricks. I day dreamed for the rest of the car ride, not responding to anyone or anything. The car stopped, but I was still day dreaming and didn’t notice until my sister slammed the car door. When I got out of the car I was immediately in awe of how nice the cabin was that we were staying at. I pushed my sister out of the way and quickly ran to go find the best room in the house. After I got all of my luggage in the room, I looked out the window and saw that the cabin was directly on one of the ski runs. This meant that I could go out the back door and be on the slopes. No walking, no lines, and no carrying my gear from the parking lot to the mountain. Once everyone got situated we put on our snow......

Blessing in Disguise

...Blessing in Disguise Throughout my life I didn’t care about watching what I ate or how much I exercised. I just wanted to eat whatever sounded good at the time. I didn’t seem to care how much I would overeat or how unhealthy I was. My main goals in life were to be lazy, eat food, and play video games. Once I got to high school, my eating habits got even worse. I would always get a second helping of food at lunch, and I would snack on gas station food. I always just told myself that I didn’t care what I looked like or how much I weighed because I was enjoying myself and I loved to eat. When I would go home, I would get snack food and eat it before dinner so that I would be full. I didn’t like having to go any period of time being hungry. This type of behavior had its consequences, though. My size made people always comment to me about how big or fat I was. I especially hated it when people would laugh when I walked into a room because I knew it was about my weight. I decided that I was going to play football my sophomore year of high school. All of my friends told me that I would be good because I was so big. I liked this plan because it meant I didn’t have to watch what I ate at all and I could be in a sport. I had wanted to play football for a while, but it seemed like it was too much work my freshman year. I am very glad that I ultimately decided to play. That year, I was able to get some playing time on our goal line defense because I was so big that I could plug......

Never Make the Same Mistake Twice

...Never Make the Same Mistake Twice Latisha Tucker Everest College Short Narrative Essay: Never Make the Same Mistake Twice I have had to learn the hard way of what my parents meant when they used to always tell me to never make the same mistake twice. I did not figure out what they were truly saying to me until I started my own life and began to make an endless number of mistakes. I learned from life’s experiences that the only way you could truly live up to this saying is when you make a complete transformation from your old ways. My life took some tremendous turns in March of 1997 when I gave birth to my first born son. I was only a child myself so I was completely clueless about what was going on in my life at the time. This was the moment when I had to make a decision to change my life for the better simply because I had a child to take care of. It was so hard for me to believe that I was a junior in high school and seventeen years old ,holding a newborn baby in my arms at the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. Everything that I once knew changed and all I wanted to focus on was being a better person for my child. I wasn’t a bad person but I made bad choices that I always ended up suffering the consequences for. When I arrived home from the hospital I immediately started going through a metamorphosis. My dedication was fully directed towards my mother for being so supportive and for assisting me and equipping me with what I needed to be successful as a teen parent......

Theology

...`#16 HABOC, Bea IC-PH Reflection in theology Devotion and Devotions Devotion and devotions: Pre-title Before, I begin to write my reflection, I would like to take this reflection as a journal. A journal of my journey today, Jan. 16, Thursday. Thursday is my most hate day. Know why? I’ve always been doomed by problems every Thursday. Whatever it may be, quarrel among friends, misunderstanding between me and my subjects or just plain not-myself day, Thursday will always come across to me as an evil witch, bewitching my supposedly happy-ending day. Well now, I’m sitting in one of wooden chairs in civil law section of library and I hear the ringing of my alarm to start reviewing and reading my lessons. I’ve decided to start with doing my reflection for devotion and devotions. Devotion and devotions: The Real Deal It begins with “In death, life is not ended, but changed” I like the word changed for the most part since I think it is the absolute, perfect word to describe the article in the essence that it sums up our faith and devotion to God. We want to change our ways, our evil ways, be change by God’s love or our boyfriend’s love, change for the future, change, change, change! It is absolutely nonsense to think that we would just wait for change to happen. Would it be today? Next Friday? I don’t think so. Change comes from us and change would not be possible without believing or putting one’s faith. And faith comes with understanding like actions should be......

The Language of Business

...Jodi Rosario Accounting 2010 Joshua Cieslewicz 21 March 2013 Accounting: The Language of Business When I first started taking this class, I had absolutely no intention of even thinking about making accounting a major or minor for my education. Having gone through the Accounting 2010 class and seeing the way that I am able to grasp onto the concepts; making accounting my major or even a minor to accompany a major in general business has weighed on my mind heavily. While researching whether or not Accounting should be that prominent in my life, I had a few questions. What would I be doing on a daily basis? Would I be forced to work alone or would I be forced to work in a team setting? Is this a career that would support my children now and in the future? Would I be happy doing it? Most of all I found myself asking if I would even be good at accounting. Researching at www.startheregoplaces.com I found an interesting section on the skills necessary to be a CPA. Strong leadership, business savvy, communication skills, and tech know-how are the four things that this sight suggests any CPA must have a healthy balance of. When I talked with Eric Shaucer, a CPA of seven years at local Credit Union, he agreed that these four things were essential in his job. Eric also let me know that “This is a left-brain position that requires attention to detail, as well as a passion for numbers and their practical application.” He also told me that the more I get involved in the......

Foreign Exchange Market Rates

...The foreign currency exchange rate is an extremely dynamic market that affects all American companies operating internationally. In the recent years, the US Dollar has been under a systematic assault resulting in a decline in its value across the major world currencies. “This assault has included vocal countries, China for example, in demanding that the US Dollar be removed as the standard international currency” (Batson, 2009, pg.1). The foreign exchange rate of a currency is a general measurement of the financial health of a country, though the rates of exchange are not tied specifically to financial measurements. Therefore, a stronger dollar will benefit Americans more than a weaker dollar. One of the blessings in disguise maybe the value of the trade deficits that US has with a foreign country like China, it may decrease because Americans are not able to purchase more of the imported goods as their costs increase. The decline in the dollar’s value has benefited some American companies. US companies that export to places where the dollar is declining has seen an increase in their bottom line. “Foreigners buying US products in their own currency are able to buy more products as the US products are cheaper” (Salvatore, 2007, p. 346). The downfall of a drop in the dollar versus foreign currencies is the affects that the depreciation has upon US importers and Americans traveling abroad. For US importers, the cost of goods increases because it takes more dollars to buy the......

Decision Making Process Paper

...Decision Making As the text states, a decision making process has five major steps. The first step is to identify and diagnose the problem, second step is to generate alternative solutions, evaluate alternatives, making the decision choice, and lastly to implement the decision. I recently came across a problem that truly changed my life. I am twenty five years old and experienced many unpredictable obstacles while trying to complete my degree. The decision to go to University of Phoenix has been a blessing in disguise but the process was quite a learning experience. From the moment I learned about the school to finally being enrolled took many steps. The steps I took were a lot like the five steps that follow the decision making process described in the textbook. First and foremost I identified and diagnosed the problem which in my case was an incomplete college degree. I wanted to find a school where I could apply without having my transcripts on hand due to an issue with a block on my record at my previous school Secondly, the next step of the process is to generate alternative solutions. Some solutions I’ve thought of is one, go to a junior college and see if I am able to take any courses there, til I pay back my previous university. Another option is finding another university that will transfer my courses without losing my previous credits. And sadly my last resort would be to quit school completely and work fulltime. These are all options that I would consider......

Housing for Poor People in Cairo, Egypt

... Following the report of 2005, the government announced a series of planned projects to tackle the housing problem in Cairo along with the cooperation of UNDP. Further, international aid organizations such as the USAID and GTZ also came forward to help in several housing projects. However, in spite of such measures there is need for further development to control the continued encroachment on agricultural lands and lack of proper housing for the poor. There is a view expressed by several scholars that informal housing is actually a solution to provide housing to the poor people in Cairo (O’Donnell, 2013). While the government of Cairo fears that slums harm the modernisation of Cairo but at the same time, informal housing is a blessing in disguise for the poor in Cairo. Some organizations such as the Ashoka and Ashoka Arab World have come up with Housing For All (HFA) imitative that aims at improving the purchasing power of the poor so that they can afford safer, cleaner and better homes. Another NGO organization, Habitat for Humanity Egypt, and the organization Cities Alliance aims at creating affordable housing...

Life Well-Lived Experience

...Life Well-Lived Experience Andini Effendi A dear friend couldn’t help to gasp when I uttered my plan on taking two years off from career to pursue master degree abroad. I remember her words vividly, “So you will leave your spot to someone younger, brighter and most probably hotter just like that?” I also remember what was my answer; it was simply “yes.” Don’t get me wrong I absolutely love my job. So much love as if I am married to my work. I am the living example of someone whose her passion becomes a profession. For me working it’s like playing. There were never a dull moment. But then I came to a point where I desired something more that would make me feel whole. It was education. I craved so much to broaden my knowledge, enriching experiences, and expanding my network. Moreover, I have a mental debt to my parents to study higher than undergraduate. Note: I agreed only until master degree. They can say goodbye to their dream of me taking a PhD. Just like “The Secret” book theory, I experienced the “Law of Attraction” with New York University. People who know me well knew I’ve always wanted to go back to the US for and only for NYU. (Sorry Columbia, you were not even on my list.) I pledged to myself on midnight before January 1, that 2011 is the year of school. And it has to be NYU. Why this year? After waking up at 2.45am 5 days a week and had to be on stand-by during my days off for the past 6 years, a break for school wont hurt. I also knew where my......

Shark Finning and Such

...Working-Out my Goals As a child, I was always extremely motivated and active in many ways. I played at least one season of almost every sport that was offered, all the way up until I was 14 and had to choose which sports to stick with throughout high school. My choices ended up being hockey and soccer, as they were my two favorites which I had done the longest. When I was younger, I didn’t understand the importance of working out and eating healthy until it hit me like a ton of bricks. At the age of 16, I had come to the conclusion that I no longer wanted to participate in sporting activities offered by the school. I wanted to focus more on studying and getting into a good college. Therefore, I withdrew from my normal routine and started something different. At the time, I was only thinking about how I was bettering myself academically, not physical. With that said, I was used to being able to scarf down as much food as I wanted because I would normally just burn it off the next morning at practice. That was not the case anymore. As the weeks went by, my muscle slowly turned into fat without me even noticing it. I thought that my body was only changing because I was still in high school and growing. I didn’t realize that I was growing wider, not taller. It took about half the year until my mom finally told me what she saw. At first I was just plain offended and in shock, but then as I took a good look at myself, and the scale, and I realized what she saw and knew I......

...HMC’s method of portfolio allocation consist of: - using the CAPM model to make long term assumptions about real return, risk, and correlations of the twelve asset classes it has created and - using the Mean Variance Optimization method (MVO) to find the set of portfolios that would provide the maximum expected return for a given level of risk and, conversely, the minimum risk for a given level of expected return (“the efficient frontier” of possible combinations of asset classes). To infer variance and covariance of each asset class and estimate all the necessary parameters for the CAPM, HMC examines historical data, asks the opinion of consultants and investment management firms and uses the current market conditions to adjust its assumptions. As the true values are unknown, it is easy to make mistakes that will impact the MVO, which has the disadvantage of being very sensitive to changes in its inputs (small changes cause significant output movement and can result in having an inefficient portfolio). As emphasized in Exhibit 11, we note that HMC, given approximately the same level of risk, has the same expectation for domestic and foreign real returns. This implies that the equity risk premium (E(ri)-rf ) for both asset classes is the same. It suggests that HMC has the same risk aversion when it comes to invest in a foreign asset or a domestic one, it expects the markets to evolve similarly. Due to its simplicity of utilization, The MVO method is very attractive......

...Throughout the coarse of this semester, this course has demanded me to expand the amount of critical thinking I put forth while reading and discussing literature. Prior to my experience in this coarse I had a very narrow mindset as to what I received from the words and events that took place in in the various books I had read. Like many people, I picked up the critical events that took place throughout plot. However I never really fully engaged myself into thinking outside of the box and trying to see the meaning behind such events and why they were truly meaningful in what was happening to the characters. Now that I have been exposed to this the detailed analysis over the coarse of several short stories, I think I am now more aware of what I am actually reading, as well as what the deeper significance is to the surrounding plot. There were a few quotes and events that took place during some of these short stories that really caught my eye and was able to for a connection with in result. The most notable quote I can think of that stood out to me was in one of the more recent short stories we read, The Colored Museum. The quote is as followed, ““... ,cause I’m not what I was ten years ago or ten minutes ago. I’m all of that and then some. And whereas I can’t live inside yesterday’s pain, I can’t live without it.” I found this quote appealing because I feel like it relates to me and a lot of people in my age group. I feel this way because we’re all at a point in our lives......
