The Thirty Years War
The Thirty Years War is one the bloodiest wars in European history before the 20th century wars. But it is also a confusing subject for most because the war had broken down into many different conflicts, each with their own problems and issues. But the war was created around one central issue. The war began as a German War, and it slowly began to grow into an international war, especially when Sweden invaded the empire. This is why several phases have been identified throughout the war. The Thirty Years War was fought between the Calvinists and Lutherans (Protestants) and Catholics to impose their laws at the Peace of Augsburg. The war had started out as a religious war, but had slowly turned into a political war more than a religious war. The Thirty Years War began because of the Peace of Augsburg in 1555. It had created a
Truce between religions in the German states. The only major flaw in the Peace of Augsburg was that it had not recognized Calvinism, but had only recognized Lutherans and the Roman Catholics. This had caused the Calvinists to fight to keep their religion …show more content…
Ferdinand, then became the Holy Roman emperor two years later, as Ferdinand II, who was a supporter of the Catholic cause. This had alarmed Bohemian Calvinists, because they feared they were going to lose their religious rights. So on May 1618, the Calvinists threw two Catholic members from the Bohemian royal council out a window. This is known as the Defenestration of Prague, and was how the Calvinist revolt began. On November 8th, 1620, the Catholic army led by Baron Tilly invaded Bohemia. The catholic army had defeated the forces of Frederick V at the battle of White Mountain. After the battle, the more immediate problem that Ferdinand and his allies had faced was how to deal with Frederick V. The temporary king of Bohemia had fled immediately after the battle, but was not prepared to abandon his claim on the Bohemian
