CHAPTER FIVE
Return of the Blue Ghoul

Early the next afternoon we were standing with our backs pressed against Emma’s porch railings. The beautiful old home skirted in river rocks was situated between two wooded, slow-sloping mountain ranges in a long, narrow valley. This front yard spread out beneath the terrace in the dappled golden light its blades of grass entwined with delicate dandelions which danced in unison in the breeze. Silver and yellow flowers bloomed in a small garden surrounded by a yew hedge shaded like an arch. And if I squinted I could make out a path that threaded through stubbly needled pine trees and the presence of a pond by the flashes of reflected light. Beyond the water were tiny purple grapevines, transformed in …show more content…
“Miss Em, you should be resting after your ordeal,” a short woman with a kind dark eyes sang. Her cream-colored hands were shriveled, but still very graceful. I imagined she had once been a beautiful dancer, perhaps a ballerina or acrobatic performer that twirled ribbons. “I know Lihua. I had to get these children settled first,” Aunt Em said. “This is Madison, Twist, and Seth can you please fix them something to eat. Ryan will probably eat too.” “Yes Miss Em,” Lihua said. Her accent sounded unfamiliar—Chinese perhaps. She plunged a large spoon into a sauce pan and added a spice. I could smell the rich tang of apples with a tinge of nutmeg. As she swished by an island and over to the fridge, a man entered the room. “Aren’t you David Shaw,” Seth asked him. “We met in Hollow Post yesterday.” “Yep,” He laughed and it sounded like a frantic yak snort. “That’s me. Never dreamed we met in a secret room next to a skeleton in blue pajamas. Then end up here trying to figure out why a ghost is haunting our house.” He sighed. “Honestly I don’t know what to make of it. Neither does anyone …show more content…
“Any questions?” I was reeling with so many, I didn’t know where to begin. “Uh, yeah—” “You don’t have time to talk now!” Lihua cried as she floated around the table placing plates in front of each of us. Then she splashed some apple cider in our cups. “It’s time to eat.” She put a platter stacked with mystery meat down. Then tossed some bread, mustard, pickles, macaroni salad, and potato chips beside it. I suddenly realized I was starving. But before I could take a bite a blood curdling scream pierced the silence. Which caused me to freak out, drop my beard, and jump to my feet. It was followed by a drowning peace. “That was Aunt Em!” Ryan shouted and ran out of the kitchen. We chased after him up the stairs and down a long dark hall. At the end a door was ajar and light stretched across the floor. I was a few steps from the handle when I heard her scream again. Slowly I slipped into the room and saw Mr. Shaw bent over Emma, who lay sprawled out on the bed. He was rubbing her temples and kept repeating, “Aunt Em! Aunt Em, can you hear me? Are you all right?” Then he spotted Lihua. “Please bring me some of Em’s smelling

Creative Writing: Return Of The Blue Ghoul: Chapters

...CHAPTER FIVE Return of the Blue Ghoul Early the next evening, Dad raced away from the tiny country cottages, The Bank of Confidential Secrets, and The Hush-Hush Moon, where folks gathered to gossip and eat. We rolled to the highway and into the hills, climbing up-and-down to a single-story, stucco home situated in a narrow stream-carved ravine. There was no time for second thoughts or long good-byes. We were on the clock. So, Dad wished us luck, and we headed up the steps to the terrace. Twist knocked on the door and we waited . . . and waited. “Maybe Miss MacBride stepped out.” Seth grinned. “Hot date.” “Whatever,” I said. “She’s here. She’s just slow.” I leaned against the railings and stared at the broad expanse of lawn blooming...

Mysterious Places

...Mysterious Places Mamyan Ann Our environment is full of magical, mystical, and mysterious places that defy explanation.  There are treasures yet to be found, stone carvings we don't yet understand, and architectural feats to be explained.  Even as we live in what we consider to be the most technologically advanced society in all history, there are currently no air-tight explanations for most of the true wonders of our planet and beyond. The Great Pyramids of Egypt are the oldest structures on earth, contain compelling evidence of a civilization far more advanced than ours, and most likely existed thousands of years before the great flood.  With their original exteriors, they could probably be seen from the moon. The Mayan Civilization left behind incredible structures containing precise calculations and prophecies regarding the exact date of end of the world........Do you know that date? A site being studied on the side of Mt.  Ararat in Turkey may be the remains of the Biblical Noah's Ark. Scientists are currently quietly investigating a site off the western tip of Cuba that some say may be part of the lost city of Atlantis. We know less about the bottom of our own seas than we do about outer space.  There is a form on the surface of Mars that strongly appears to resemble an Egyptian face carving.  Is there a link? These are just a few of the many fascinating and mysterious places we intend to visit on these pages.  From sunken...

New Start

...Chapter 1 I Get What I Pay For Welcome to Red Grove. Population 200 “Now, two hundred and one,” I murmured as I passed the painted wooden sign in my trusty red Jeep. Small towns like Red Grove always made me think of horror movies as if a gap-toothed, overall-wearing butcher might hobble out of his deep woods shanty, pitchfork in hand, at any moment. The town had an off the charts creepy factor. On my right, a dark forest worthy of the Brothers Grimm. On my left, a cemetery edged in a weathered wrought iron fence. I think there were more than two hundred headstones. More dead than living. Nice. There must be some mistake. I came here to start over. Could a new life be hiding behind the unappealing rural exterior? My promised house remained a mystery. I double-checked the notebook with my father’s scrawled directions resting on the passenger’s seat next to me. Technically, I’d lived in Red Grove as a child, but we’d moved before I turned two. I didn’t remember the town at all or the residents, living or dead. I shifted my attention back to my driving. “Holy shit!” I proclaimed as I overcorrected the wheel, and my foot drifted from the gas. The man on the side of the road was so attractive I could’ve died—literally. He was planting something. A tree, I think. Every time his shovel hit the dirt, a ripple coursed through his shoulders and down his stomach. I raised an eyebrow at the glint of sun on tanned, shirtless skin. Dark hair, low slung jeans. I tried not to...

Fall of Asclepius

...Fall of Asclepius By Harm 1 and Icrick Prologue Where should I begin? The apocalypse happened so fast. In less than a month, monsters infested every part of this world. People panicked, people died. They clawed at each other just to get out of all the infested areas around the world. There was problem about fleeing from infested areas. Everywhere was infested. There was no where anyone could go without encountering the walking plague. You know that phrase "War is Hell"? Well... it's dead wrong. War at least has some organization to it. What was faced in the last days... by last days I mean the last days of civilization not life; itself. What was faced was hell. Everyone went ape shit insane. Everyone was killing and raping each other into oblivion, because we were under attack by creatures that was so beyond our understanding! Geez, there were many names given to these undead. Some called them demons, others called them lost souls. With all these names, I found only one that was truly worthy; Zombies. It was a simple word. At the same time it was the most complicated word to enter any human language. I mean just think about it... You say that word to anyone before the outbreak and what would they think of? They would, think of those horror movies or comic books where, for no reason what so ever, zombies appear all around the globe in an instance. That's not how it happened for us. There were signs for over two months. It's just that no one took the time to put the...

Elena asked. I am now. Stefan didn't say it, but Elena knew it was what he was thinking. She could see it in the way he stared at her. She had never been so sure of her power. Except that actually he didn't look as if he were having a good time; he looked stricken, in pain, as if he couldn't take one more minute of this. The band was starting up, a slow dance. He was still staring at her, drinking her in. Those green eyes darkening, going black with desire. She had the sudden feeling that he might jerk her to him and kiss her hard, without ever saying a word. "Would you like to dance?" she said softly. I'm playing with fire, with something I don't understand, she thought suddenly. And in that instant she realized that she was frightened. Her heart began to pound violently. It was as if those green eyes spoke to some part of her that was buried deep beneath the surface—and that part was screaming "danger" at her. Some instinct older than civilization was telling her to run, to flee. She didn't move. Don't miss these exciting books from HarperPaperbacks! THE VAMPIRE DIARIES: A TRILOGY L. J. If I Stay

...FOR NICK Finally . . . Always 7:09 A.M. Everyone thinks it was because of the snow. And in a way, I suppose that’s true. I wake up this morning to a thin blanket of white covering our front lawn. It isn’t even an inch, but in this part of Oregon a slight dusting brings everything to a standstill as the one snowplow in the county gets busy clearing the roads. It is wet water that drops from the sky—and drops and drops and drops—not the frozen kind. It is enough snow to cancel school. My little brother, Teddy, lets out a war whoop when Mom’s AM radio announces the closures. “Snow day!” he bellows. “Dad, let’s go make a snowman.” My dad smiles and taps on his pipe. He started smoking one recently as part of this whole 1950s, Father Knows Best retro kick he is on. He also wears bow ties. I am never quite clear on whether all this is sartorial or sardonic—Dad’s way of announcing that he used to be a punker but is now a middle-school English teacher, or if becoming a teacher has actually turned my dad into this genuine throwback. But I like the smell of the pipe tobacco. It is sweet and smoky, and reminds me of winters and woodstoves. “You can make a valiant try,” Dad tells Teddy. “But it’s hardly sticking to the roads. Maybe you should consider a snow amoeba.” I can tell Dad is happy. Barely an inch of snow means that all the schools in the county are closed, including my high school and the middle school where Dad works, so it’s an unexpected day off for him, too. My mother, who...
