Body mass index (BMI), also called the Quetelet Index, and is a calculation used to determine and the amount of amount of body fat we have. Not everyone who is a little bit over weight will benefit from weight loss. However BMI is not a diagnostic tool. A person may have a high BMI. But to determine if excess weight is a health risk, a doctor would recommend they be further tested. These assessments might include skin fold thickness measurements, evaluations of diet, physical activity, family history, and other appropriate health screenings. The use of BMI allows us to compare our weight status to the general population According to the BMI weight status categories, anyone with a BMI over 25 would be classified as overweight and anyone with a BMI over 30 would be classified as obese. It is important to remember that BMI is not a direct measure of body fatness and that BMI is calculated from our weight and height which includes both muscle and fat. As a result, some people may have a high BMI but not have a high percentage of body fat. Highly trained athletes may have a high BMI because of their increased muscles rather than increased body fat. Although some people with a BMI in the overweight range from 25.0 to 29.9 may not have excess body fatness, most people with a BMI in the obese range is getter then 30 will have increased levels in body fat. The BMI number is calculated the same way for children and adults, the way it’s used to interpret the meaning of the BMI number for children and teens are different from how it’s used for adults. Each body system was addressed in its own individual exhibit, starting with the skeletal system and progressing through the muscular, nervous, circulatory, digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive systems plus an exhibit on fetal development. Healthy and diseased specimens were showcased in each exhibit. As you walk through the South Street Seaport, arrows with the word “Bodies” lead you to the exhibit itself. The ticket prices were a little steep, but with a coupon the price came to $21.95 for one adult admission. As soon as you walk into the main building, there are posters and pictures of the exhibits everywhere. Also everywhere were helpful and friendly staff, who lead us to wherever we needed to go eagerly and with a smile. After being informed of the general rules, i.e. no food or drink, no photography, etc, we were allowed inside.
