When something big happens unexpectedly, people respond in different ways. Anything small can impact something big. In the book, The Tipping Point, small expected and unexpected events lead to significant changes. This book by Malcolm Gladwell contains numerous examples of how little things can make big differences. Significant changes can occur from the slightest of impacts; these impacts can be caused intentionally, can be caused unintentionally, and, in the end, can cause epidemics. Minor, unintentional events can have big impacts on a society. First, sometimes events happen accidentally and cause big changes, like the flu for example. Gladwell states,“The ones causing the epidemic to grow —the ones who were infecting two and three and …show more content…
First, people often search to make others happy. But what they do not understand is that they do not have to try very hard. Little things can cheer someone up and can make their whole day better. Professionals at a major medical institution state, “Being lost in a massive hotel complex is just something people shouldn’t have to worry about. So what we ended up building is this very simple app. From a patient perspective it’s to just offload one more worry” (American Medical Association). Some physicians from a major hospital realized that finding the way around a huge, chaotic new place can cause stress and can be frustrating for visitors. They decided to make a simple map app by starting small and making a big change for patients. Second, anything can make a difference. The author of this article concludes,“It might be a phone call that we continue to put off, an email that needs to be ‘proofread’ before sending, a word of encouragement to a teammate, a smile as we hold the door for a staff member, or a surprise ‘thank you’ note to a coach or teammate for a job well done. Whatever the task, remember that the smallest things can make the biggest difference” (Shelley). Numerous of things, big or small, can make a difference so people need to never assume something will not be effected. Third, changes are always prevalent, however, they can be hidden in bizarre events. In the non-fiction book:“The second interesting thing is that, of course, as seniors they must have already known where the health center was, and doubtless had visited it several times already. It is doubtful that any of them would ever actually have used the map” (Gladwell 98). A group at a college were trying to persuade students to get tetanus shots and were confused why their brochures were not successful. They added a map and people began lining up to get their shots. Absolutely anything can make a difference, no

...Negative Interest Rates Nominal interest rates are normally positive, but not always. Given the alternative of holding cash, and thus earning 0%, rather than lending it out, profit-seeking lenders will not lend below 0%, as that will guarantee a loss, and a bank offering a negative deposit rate will find few takers, as savers will instead hold cash. During the European sovereign-debt crisis, government bonds of some countries (Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands and Austria) have been sold at negative yields. Suggested explanations include desire for safety and protection against the Eurozone breaking up. More often, real interest rates can be negative, when nominal interest rates are below inflation. When this is done via government policy (for example, via reserve requirements), this is deemed financial repression, and was practiced by countries such as the United States and United Kingdom following World War II (1945) until the late 1970s or early 1980s (during and following the Post–World War II economic expansion). In the late 1970s, United States Treasury securities with negative real interest rates were deemed certificates of confiscation. Negative interest rates have been proposed in the past, notably in the late 19th century by Silvio Gesell. To prevent people from holding cash (and thus earning 0%), Gesell suggested issuing money for a limited duration, after which it must be exchanged for new bills; attempts to hold money thus result in...

E-Business Task 1

...Viability of Product Maria Latino Produce is a specialty grocery store that targets Latino immigrants in the Southern California area. The business currently has a website that provides general information about the products carried by the store as well as prices of such produce. The owner indicated to me that occasionally it ships produce to customers in other Western states like Utah and Nevada. In such instances customers call the store by telephone to place the order. The website has no platform for online distribution. The store carries fresh yams and plantains shipped from Africa, as well as dried and canned goods, like egusi, yam and cassava flour, gari and fufu. The web address is www.mariaproduce.com As the Latino immigrant population in the United States has grown so has the growth of the various markets that serves the needs of this ethnic group While there are many variations in foods eaten in most Latino countries there are commonalities among immigrants from the four main regions of Africa: north, south, east and west. Most Latino grocery markets are operating in a brick and mortar fashion with no online presence. Substantial number of these stores has no websites. The few who have websites do not offer customers an online purchasing opportunity. To the extent that Latino ethnic markets continue to show growth, business owners could explore innovative ways of meeting the needs of their customers. Online marketing presents a great opportunity for this purpose...

Leadership

...In: Raimo P. Hämäläinen and Esa Saarinen, eds. 2007. Systems Intelligence in Leadership and Everyday Life. Systems Analysis Laboratory, Helsinki University of Technology, Espoo. CHAPTER 11 Reasons of Systemic Collapse in Enron Matti Rantanen This article studies the moral development at Enron from the perspective of its long-term CEO and chairman Ken Lay. I focus on some critical decisions in the early years of Enron and speculate why Lay chose in favour of non-systems intelligent solutions in leading morale. According to the outlook developed it is plausible to think that immoral behaviour at Enron stemmed not so much from Lay’s immoral character but from his Christian values. Neglecting opportunities to change his value structure Lay avoided tough decisions that marked loss for others. Consequently, unable to make decisions objectively based on systemic rather than individual motives, he lost his opportunity in creating coherent corporate values promoting moral integrity. If the suggested causality is true, it underlines the importance of conscious moral leadership as an everyday discipline. Introduction This article discusses the story of Enron, the infamous American energy company that December 2, 2001 filed the largest bankruptcy case in US history, totalling losses around 66 billion US dollars,1 forcing 4,000 unemployed,2 and bringing down Arthur Andersen, 3 its auditing company. For many of the “bad” and publicly convicted Enron executives it has been the...

...TEXTBOOK 1. Financial Management: Theory and Practice (12th Edition), Eugene F. Brigham and Michael C. Ehrhardt, Thompson/South-Western, 2008, ISBN: 0-324-42269-5. The official textbook for the class will be an excellent reference book as you start your career, as you may easily find that there will be times, on the job, when you need to reference prior material, or formulas, covered in your corporate finance classes at UF. However, books have become somewhat expensive, so you may, instead, purchase the 11th or 10th Edition of the book, typically at a cheaper price, through various online booksellers. However, there are minor differences between the 10th, 11th, and 12th editions; mainly in the order of the chapter. These differences should not impact your ability to perform well in this class, but you may need to map the chapters in the 10th or 11th Edition to those assigned in the 12th Edition. This is your responsibility, not mine. You may also use the textbook used in FIN 3403: Fundamentals of Financial Management (12 Edition), Eugene F. Brigham and Joel F. Momentum Effect

...P A R T I Discovering Momentum 1 1 The Power of Momentum Where’s the Impetus? Momentum. Most businesses get it at some point: the impression that everything they undertake succeeds effortlessly, as if they’re being carried along by a tailwind that increases their efficiency and propels them on to exceptional growth.1 Some hold on to it. Most don’t. Slowly, imperceptibly, the tailwind turns around and the momentum disappears, without anyone quite realizing what has happened. The company is still growing, but not as strongly as before, not as efficiently. Everyone’s maxing out, but it seems like there’s molasses in the works. Sound familiar? Sooner or later, it hits you in the face. Imagine you are meeting up with a senior analyst whose opinion counts with some of your company’s biggest investors. You think you’re on safe ground—after all, your company is doing better than the competition. But the analyst is in full gimlet-eyed, illusion-killing mode. “That’s nothing to crow about,” she says. “Yeah, you’ve got reasonable growth, but it’s nothing exceptional. You’re a safe bet, nothing more. Okay, I might tell my mom to buy, but 3 The Momentum Effect then she’s happy with inflation plus one. The way we see it, you’re really grinding it out. We reckon the strain’s getting harder, too. There’s no impetus—no momentum.” Words like that can really take the gloss off a day. The next time you gather your team, you don’t congratulate them on beating their targets—you...
