Albert Einstein once said “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The World will have a generation of idiots.” The world is so reliant on saving trees and saving paper that everything is becoming electronic. With all magazines and books converting to e-magazines and e-books the world will become too dependent on technology. In a nation that citizens are already too dependent on technology I fear that this will create problems in the future. No one will really know the feeling of a magazine or newspaper hot off the press or the crisp smell of the pages of a brand new book.
Taking a deeper look into saving trees and paper, books can be recycled and reused by hundreds or maybe thousands of different people. Whereas, the e-readers that are used for the e-books and e-magazines are mainly used by one person and are poorly disposed of whenever they get worn out or something better comes along. Compared to old fashioned books, e-books and e-magazines pose a greater demand other than just cutting down a tree. For example, manufacturing of electronic products, the shipping costs, fuel, and eventually, the energy needed to recycle these materials at the end of their days. I feel that with all that time and money wasted, people could just as well drive or even walk to their nearest library and check out a few books, and most of the time they are free.
Living in a technology dependent nation, everything is going electronic. Just as Albert Einstein said “…technology will surpass our human interaction…” I feel that with all the smart phones, computers, tablets, and e-readers people do not take the time to socialize and interact in person. Everything can be done online and with the lack of human contact it seems we are all heading in a downward slope where we all become lazy and dependent on our electronic surroundings to do everything. It seems as if...

Addressing the Growing Problem of Book Piracy (Ebooks)

...Addressing the Growing Problem of Book Piracy (eBooks) For many years, books have been used as a means to obtain knowledge. In the early times, books used to be so big that it was not practical to carry them around then pocket sized books were made. Due the growing interest of people it is was no longer enough to read just one, two, three or even four books so eBooks were created. An eBook is an electronic version of a traditional print book that can be read by using a personal computer or by using an eBook reader. EBooks are a more convenient and more practical way to access information. The most efficient way to get eBooks is through the internet – it may be for free or it may come with a price. The use of eBooks is becoming a trend nowadays because most of the books published can also be downloaded as eBooks. Most of the people at this point in time can be seen holding an eBook reader. And because of the rampant of the use of it, electronic piracy in relation to eBooks is also rising. Any person who has acquired or purchased an eBook may copy it into another device, share it to another user and may even post or share it in the internet; said practice may lead to infringement because it may not constitute fair use anymore. Article 185 of the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines states that “ xxx In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is fair use, the factors to be considered shall include: (a) The purpose and character of......

Business Analysis

...w ww.pwc.com Turning the Page The Future of eBooks Technology, Media & Telecommunications Foreword Today, it seems eBooks and eReaders provide more questions than answers for the book industry: • Will the industry face the same issues that music publishers did during its digital transformation several years ago – primarily digital piracy and a loss of revenue as customers discovered new methods of acquiring content and adopted new listening habits? Publishers, Internet bookstores, and companies that manufacture eReaders have high expectations for the digital future of the book industry. A new generation of eReaders may, at last, achieve the long-awaited breakthrough that lures consumers away from paper and ink. In the United States, Amazon has revolutionized the market by producing an eReader that is easy to use and making it easy for customers to purchase a wide variety of books at competitive prices. While some people herald the advent of digital reader technology as an opportunity to open new target markets and create customers, others mourn the end of traditional books and doubt the industry will be able to retain control over pricing and content. • Who will purchase eReaders? Will they be designed to appeal to a broad group of customers or only to those who have a high degree of comfort with technology? Will people who read once in a while want to buy an eReader, or will they only be purchased by the small group......

Book Publishing Industry

...Assignment 1 The book publishing industry is rapidly changing. Gone are the days of brick and mortar book stores. People desire the fast paced changing world that technology has created. Technology has led to a total and complete transformation of the way books are sold. This new phenomena is known as the electronic book. The electronic book or eBook allows users to download their favorite book right to there handheld reader. These readers take the form of dedicated eBook devices such as the Kindle or fully integrated digital media devices such as the IPad. These downloads are relatively inexpensive compared to buying the printed book version. Also, as technology progresses and the market becomes more saturated the price of the readers will fall even lower than their already relatively affordable prices. Does this new form of media have enough to overtake its predecessor of the printed book? The introduction of this near perfect sounding new media is facing some resistance. This resistance is coming for the publishers that produce the material in the first place. They are fighting to keep the old business model of printed books alive. This struggle is similar to that of the music industry. The once striving music industry is now crumbled due to the introduction of online music downloads. Most of this is due to illegal music sharing, but it is also attributable to the pricing of the songs. Publishers fear that this will have the same effect on the book industry. There......

E-Books

...Ebooks An electronic book (variously: e-book, eBook, e-Book, ebook, digital book, or even e-edition) is a book-length publication in digital form, consisting of text, images, or both, readable on computers or other electronic devices.[1] Although sometimes defined as "an electronic version of a printed book",[2] many e-books exist without any printed equivalent. Commercially produced and sold e-books are usually intended to be read on dedicated e-book readers, however, almost any sophisticated electronic device that features a controllable viewing screen, including computers, many mobile phones, and nearly all smartphones, can also be used to read e-books. History The inventor of the first e-book is not widely agreed upon. Some notable candidates include the following: The first e-book may be the Index Thomisticus, a heavily annotated electronic index to the works of Thomas Aquinas, prepared by Roberto Busa beginning in the late 1940s. However, this is sometimes omitted, perhaps because the digitized text was (at least initially) a means to developing an index and concordance, rather than as a published edition in its own right.[3] Some years earlier the idea of the e-reader came to Bob Brown after watching his first "talkie" (movies with sound). In 1930, he wrote an entire book on this invention and titled it "The Readies" playing off the idea of the "talkie".[4] In his book, Brown says that movies have out maneuvered the book by creating the "talkies" and as a result...
