I was born and raised in Austin, Texas. There are those who I have heard about who were born and raised in a town, but when they grew up they just wanted to leave and never come back. Not me, I love Austin. Some would say that I don’t know what I don’t know, because I haven't lived in any other city. However, I know of no other place in the world where you can play, work and live with a community of very friendly people who enjoy variety and many different cultures as much as we do in Austin Texas.

Jane Austin

...Introduction All literature bears traces of the historical moment which gives rise to it. About the Author James Plunkett Kelly was born in Dublin in 1920. His middle name was imposed on him by an enthusiastic parish priest. He went to school in Synge Street and was educated by the Christian Brothers and also at the Dublin Municipal School of Music where he studied the viola and the violin. He also played Gaelic football up to provincial level. His father died young and James became the breadwinner for the family. He worked for a while as a musician but then got a job as a clerk in the Dublin Gas Company. This led him to join the Workers Union of Ireland, when Trade Unions at the time were neither profitable nor popular. In 1946 to 55, he became Branch Organiser for the Workers Union of Ireland. He reported directly to James Larkin and he worked in the next office. James Larkin and the 1913-14 Dublin Lockout Played a very big role in Plunkett’s writings and he was a great admirer of his. In 1955 he went to the Soviet Union and on his return was criticised by the church who printed an article in the Catholic Standard newspaper calling for both his and James Larkin’s dismissal. However later he resigned. Most of Plunkett’s writings are about Dublin and people living in poverty and suffering. He wrote Strumpet City which took ten years to write, as he kept leaving it and going back to writing at different times. During this time he was a producer in RTE. Later...

Born Again

...Born Again The short story “Born Again” was written by Anne Billson. It was written in 1993. It is a postmodern story. Postmodernism is a term that describes the movement in arts, literature, culture, etc., that was an extension of modernism. Postmodernism involved the break with the norms and ideals of the modernism. In postmodernism you often include the perception of common truths. Postmodernism is a very hard term to define, since it is so abstract. Born Again is a story filled with action. It is filled with violence, but in the same way it is kind of ironic and satirical. Born Again is a story about a woman named Nancy Loughlin, who lives and works in the city of London. She is very career-minded. It seems like/that she has a very important position in an international firm of some sort. The reason you could think it is international, is because of her appointment with “the Belgians”. She is a single woman and it does not appear that she has any family. She is very fixated about her health. She does not allow her self to do drugs, have sex, and smoke cigarettes or anything related. The introduction however, implies that she might have a past that involved these vices. Even though she cares about her health, she still allows her self a glass of wine, and her urge of the famous Fudge Tub is very excessive. In the text Nancy is pregnant, but she has not been sleeping with anyone for some years. She then gets in trouble with a quite extreme Christian...

Austin vs Dallas

...Austin VS. Dallas Compare and Contrast (Draft #1) Senator William Blakely once said, “Texas is neither southern nor western. Texas is Texas.” Although this well-stated quote exemplifies the pride that Texans have for their home state, the blanket proclamation is one that fails to distinguish the unique characteristics found in nearly every region of the lone star state. A quote that offers a much more accurate description and distinguishes the diversity and differences of each city/region was made by professional golfer Lee Trevino when he stated, “If you’ve ever driven across Texas, you know how different one area of the state can be from another. Take El Paso. It looks as much like Dallas as I look like Jack Nicklaus.” The quote is a metaphor that juxtaposes the similarities shared between El Paso and Dallas to the physical similarities shared between Jack Nicklaus, one of the most decorated golfers of all time, and Lee Trevino, a Mexican-American golfer. Now, more than ever, there are more differences between each region in Texas than there are similarities. Two such regions that have undoubtedly diverged from their common ancestry are the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area and the Austin “Hill Country” region. From sports and music, to leisure activities and geography, each area boasts its own culture that is neither superior nor lesser to its counterpart. In 2011, the official U.S. Census ranked the Dallas-Fort Worth area as the largest metropolitan area in the...

Born Round

...Analysis of Born Round When reading Born Round by Frank Bruni, I did not have to go any further than the cover to figure out his intended purpose. His purpose is to tell a story of "family, food, and a ferocious appetite." Bruni gives very detailed descriptions of the way he grew up, with food being the center of his life. Bruni says "I remember almost everything about my childhood in terms of food. In terms of favorite foods, to be more accurate, or even favorite parts of favorite foods" (13). This tells me he was very focused on what he was eating. Another factor in determining the effectiveness of this memoir is to figure out who Bruni's intended audience is. I think his intended audience is his critics, friends, family, followers (foodies), and people who have struggled with their weight. I think that some of his hope for this book was to help people that have had some of the same problems with self image. In the last chapter he reflects on his niece Leslie "picking at her food and controlling her portions" (350). He feels this might be normal for a girl her age but he makes a silent wish that Leslie's eating habits will stay normal. I do not think he would have made this wish if at least some part of him did not want to stop people from going through the same struggles he has. Bruni struggled with his perceived body image, for instance, as when he talks about having to jump out of the pool and quickly find a t-shirt to cover his body (47). I do not think...

First Born

...First Born When I was 19 I became pregnant with my first child. I was at work when I became sick. I went to the doctor the next day. They gave me two different types of pregnancy test and both came back positive. The moment the doctor walked in I knew that’s what she was going to tell me. In that moment my whole life changed. I did not know what was going to happen to me, my family, or my relationship. I was going to school and working full time, was I just supposed to stop all that for a kid? I went home to tell my boyfriend and soon after my parents. Travis took the news very well. He hoped for a boy as all males do, but secretly I wanted it to be a boy as well. Travis was very supportive in my decision to keep the baby and he promised to stay with me all the way. My parents loved the idea of having a grandbaby. They weren’t too fond of my age but they soon came over it. They began buying things for the baby even though we didn’t know the sex yet. It was such a great thing to see and feel all their support for me and Travis. The day arrived for us to find out the sex and it was also Travis’ first time going to an ultrasound. The second we walked in Travis began to become uncomfortable and paced around the waiting room. The doctor called us back, and we sat there in that below freezing room with no means of escape. Here we are about to see our baby with no idea how we’re going to do this. The doctor placed the gel then the wand on my belly. She looked around a moment...

Stephen F Austin

...Stephen F. Austin Often when individuals reflect on the history of Texas, many great names with acts of heroism come to mind. However, when asked to explain the interpretation, and accomplishments these heroes achieved, we draw a blank. One hero in particular is Stephen F. Austin. This individual has acquired the title as "Father of Texas" and yet many people don't understand the impact and importance this man was, and still is, on the state of Texas. Stephen F. Austin was born on November 3, 1793. His father, Moses Austin and mother, Mary Brown, set high expectations for him since birth. Through the years, Austin traveled from place to place due to his Fathers work and acquired knowledge of his father's business, a mining operation. At the age of ten, Austin was driven to school and ultimately graduated from college. He had spent some time working for his father and spending some time in the military. Stephen was discharged from the military as a senior level sergeant upon completion of his term. During this time in Stephens life, his father, Moses, departed to San Antonio to petition for a land grant from the Spanish territory. The land grant gave authorization for 300 families with a total of 200,000 acres to be separated amongst themselves. Before completion of the land grant, Moses Austin passed away. This left Stephen to follow his father's dreams and continue to pursue the colonization of a territory from the Spanish. Austin had a difficult time getting the...
