Bottled Water

There are many different kinds of bottled waters for sale in this modern day. Some bottled waters are carbonated, flavored, or have added chemicals for cleaning purposes. A twenty ounce bottle of water cost’s around one or two dollars. In reference to the water bill from my parent’s house in the town of Chesaning which is in Saginaw County the cost of water is three dollars and thirty cents for one thousand gallons of municipal water (Ebenhoeh D). Not only do bottled water companies use up the earth’s water supply, they use massive amounts of plastic, and the water they sell that is supposedly cleaner and more healthy than tap water, is less healthy and has more contaminants than tap water. Bottled water is no cleaner than municipal water. In the United States bottled standards are set and regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards for cleanliness are not as high as the regulations set for city or municipal water set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). According to Lauren Posnick of the FDA, bottled water can have up to two hundred and fifty parts per million of dissolved solids and still be clean enough to sell (Posnick). Drinking water that comes through the tap is monitored through the Environmental Protection Agency, also known as the EPA. The EPA standards for water are much higher and much more thorough than the FDA. According to the EPA the FDA allows up to two hundred and fifty parts per million of solids in water the EPA goes through and checks the water supply for each solid individually and has lower limits on solids, microorganisms, disinfectants, inorganic and organic chemicals, radionuclides, and alpha particles (EPA.gov). The EPA goes through and checks for any solid, chemical, liquid, or gas that could get into the water supply and strictly enforces what

Bottled Water Vs Tap Water Essay

...controversy surrounding tap water and bottled water exists. Americans spend $12 billion on bottled water every year when tap water is free. It takes 1.63 liters of tap water to make every liter of bottled water, and 1.5 million tons of plastic are used to manufacture all those bottles, noted by Biksham Gujja, head of WWF International’s Fresh Water Program (“Tap Water is Clearly Better”). Tap water is better than bottled water because it comes from the earth and is all natural, whereas bottled water is manufactured, there is a cost to make the bottles and ship, and is sold practically everywhere. Many people believe water should be free. Tap water is tested and regulated by The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is responsible for ensuring the safety of the water you drink. Public drinking water systems must meet health-based federal standards for contaminants, including performing regular monitoring and reporting (“Public Drinking Water Systems”). Water and Contamination Final Paper

...Water Quality and Contamination SCI 207: Dependence of man on the environment Instructor: Marc Hnytka Date: September, 2014 Water Quality and Contamination Abstract The correlation between water quality and contamination was examined through using different substances in the water along how these substances effected the water quality. Different levels of contamination is seen through the process of different acids (vinegar) oils (cooking oil) and fragrances (laundry detergent) in three different water models. When these contaminants are filtered naturally through the earth (charcoal, gravel, sand, etc.) the outcome is a purified water from each containment sample. This overall theory suggest that natural filtration will take place if the eco-system is not overwhelmed by these contaminants. Introduction Water quality is important when providing sufficient ecological balance for drinking purposes, vegetation and more particularly fish species. The most important resource used in America, such as growing crop, is produced consistently through the provision of monitoring the quantity of water sources along with the quality of what the water contains. There are certain minerals and contaminates that can harm us as humans and also the eco-system. For example, oil spillage from drilling, nuclear plants, and use of GMO’s to grow food can have a major impact on the water quality and soil. To make sure that we are healthy and everything runs properly, we must make sure we drink the right amount of water (Diet and Health). The one question when thinking about water is what type of water will you drink? Many people in the world today are switching from drinking tap water to drinking bottled water. The number of people who drink bottled water has been rising over the past few decades and by an average of 7% per year. Some reasons for this could be because bottled water is convenient and is said to taste better and be healthier for you than tap water. However this is not always the case. The water that you just paid for could have possibly come out of the municipal water supply. The global consumption of bottled water was 154 billion liters in 2004, up 57 percent from the 98 billion liters consumed in 1999. Even though most of the time bottled water...

Final Lab Report

...Lab Report Abstract The experiments conducted for this lab report focused on water contamination and filtration. Experiment 1 was effects of groundwater contamination. Oil, vinegar, and laundry detergent were added to clean water with no means of filtration. The clean water was found to be contaminated. A filtration system consisting of cheesecloth and 60 ml of soil was created and the contaminated samples were filtered through it. The soil and cheese cloth did not affectively filter the contaminants. Experiment 2 focused on water treatment and a filtration system using cheesecloth, sand, activated charcoal, alum, and gravel was created. The contaminated water sample was created by mixing soil and water together. After the contaminated water was put through the filtration system and a few drops of bleach were added you could see that much of the sediment was filtered out, but an overwhelming bleach smell remained. The third experiment was to determine drinking water quality. Samples of Dasani and Fiji bottled water were compared to my local tap water. Test strips were used to determine each samples ammonia, chloride, alkalinity, chlorine, hardness, phosphate, and iron levels. The results were that the Dasani water was cleaner overall and that the Fiji water and tap water had nearly identical levels. ...1. Lancaster City Tap Water vs. Dasani Bottled Water Lancaster City tap water is tested by the Environmental Protection Agency in order to hold standards of metals, chemicals, microorganisms, and byproducts to ensure safety of the consumer. On the other hand, Dasani bottled water is tested by the Food and Drug Administration for the same contaminants and both tests hold the same Maximum Contaminant Levels, with the exception of lead, where Dasani has lower MCLs for the substance. Dasani bottled water is way more expensive than Lancaster City tap water considering the fact that each 550ml bottle requires 17L of water to produce. EWG testing for 10 popular brands show that there were an average of 8 pollutants in each brand of bottled water and 1/3 of the chemicals found are not regulated, thus exceeding the legal limit for tap water. Lancaster City tap water is probably a healthier choice to drink since the water is subject to annual testing that allows the public to see the MCLs, whereas there are no annual testing required for Dasani and bottled water. 2.Water Privatization: Benefits and Disadvantages Water privatization refers to the transfer of ownership of water resources from the public sector to the private sector. Because water services are seen as such a key public service, proposals for private sector participation often evoke strong opposition. Globally, more than 90% of water and sanitation systems are publicly owned and operated. Water privatization functions...

Ads are used to give messages to different audience to make sells . By convincing the audience , the ad is trying to show why they are the best choice . By enhancing image , creating new logos and new catch phrases . Sidehustlenation.com says ,“SmartWater is vapor distilled water. From what I can understand, pretty much all water is vapor distilled, meaning it originally came from clouds.According to their website, most SmartWater is procured from municipal water systems. Read, “tap water.”Then the Smart Water goes through Glaceau’s proprietary filtration process, that removes just about everything from the water except two H’s and an O. SmartWater then adds back in the electrolytes calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, and potassium bicarbonate for taste. I think the for taste part is important because the nutrition label still reads 0 mg of sodium, and the amounts of electrolytes added have essentially zero gatorade-effect. In fact, the amount of electrolytes found in SmartWater is less than in other brands of non-electrolyte-added” bottled waters. The reason why it is called Smartwater is because it’s business of course! Globally, bottled water is a $100...

Water Bottle Deposits a Plus

...Water Bottle Deposits a Plus Danielle L. Tippett Baker College of Owosso Water Bottle Deposits a Plus To walk down the streets today, nearly everyone passing by is carrying a water bottle in which they purchased at the store. It seems that the amount of water being sold by stores is increasing. Where are these water bottles being disposed of is the question. Too many of these water bottles are not being disposed of properly since the majority of these are consumed by people away from home (Lockhart,para.3). They are put into trash cans or thrown on the ground as litter. If there was a bottle deposit required on all water bottles purchased then people would be more conscious of their disposal techniques putting a stop to waste created by consuming water. All water bottles need to have a deposit which can be set by each state’s legislature to help reduce landfill waste and littering. One of the many great benefits of having a water bottle deposit is that it will help to control littering on the streets and beaches which in turn is affecting the environment. When there is litter floating along the beach shores a person might not feel so apt to swimming while on their vacation. The empty water bottles that line the streets will make certain neighborhoods less desirable thus bringing down homeowners property values. The local landfills are increasing in size with all the extra water bottles being carelessly thrown into trash cans. It is estimated that about 500,000 water and...
