Final Report on the Investigation of the Macondo Well Blowout
Deepwater Horizon Study Group March 1, 2011
The Deepwater Horizon Study Group (DHSG) was formed by members of the Center for Catastrophic Risk Management (CCRM) in May 2010 in response to the blowout of the Macondo well on April 20, 2010. A fundamental premise in the DHSG work is: we look back to understand the why‘s and how‘s of this disaster so we can better understand how best to go forward. The goal of the DHSG work is defining how to best move forward – assessing what major steps are needed to develop our national oil and gas resources in a reliable, responsible, and accountable manner.

...British Petrolum 2012 BP Oil Spill Management Dr…………………………………….. Nahla…………………………… , Nuf………………………. QATAR UNIVERSITY Executive Summary This paper examines the oil spill that took place due to an explosion at one of the drilling rig of British Petroleum on 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico and the managerial response to that crisis. Introduction: History of British Petroleum (BP) According to the British Petroleum's website, the company has started in 1908 with oil found in a rugged part of Persia after a long and hard search. Since then, discoveries large and small have participated in our progress. This is the first phase of BP between 1901 and 1908, the period during which the oil discovery was uncertain. The company has started as the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, which would be called one day BP. The next phase of BP's history was from 1909 to 1924, when the Field of Naphtha was 210 rugged kilometers from the mouth of the Persian Gulf. The Anglo-Persian was building a refinery to turn the thick crude oil into a usable product. Despite its name, the British Petroleum brand was originally created by a German firm as a way of marketing its products in Britain. During the I World war, the British government seized the company’s assets, and the Public Trustee sold them to Anglo-Persian in 1917. The Third phase of BP's history was from 1925 to 1945, when cars flooded onto the streets of Europe and the United States in the 1920s and 30s. BP-labeled gasoline pumps...

Bp Oil Spill

...The BP oil spill has become widely accepted as the worst manmade environmental calamity in US history. The disaster wasn’t a catastrophe solely because of the extent of harm it caused the environment, but also because of the lack of concern and benevolence BP (primarily their CEO Tony Hayward) showed towards most stakeholders. This paper will give an account of many of the primary errors that were committed by BP. Also, specific dates will be used as a timeline in order to emphasize BP’s lack of concern and ability to act in a legal and ethical manner during the crisis. On April 20, 2010, a Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 workers and causing the worst environmental disaster in US history (BBC News, 2010). Although there were obvious concerns for the environment, many of these worries were eased when the US Coast Guard announced that they were confident that there was no oil leaking from the well; which was located nearly a mile below the ocean’s surface. Given the depth and location at which BP was working, it would seem illogical not to have a crisis management plan in place. Unfortunately for BP, the company never acknowledged any real risk of a Deepwater oil spill. Thus, BP did not appear to have any related response plan in place. As they previously sought to expand Deepwater oil exploration, along with the rest of the oil industry, BP categorized a Deepwater spill as decidedly unlikely and claimed that if such a spill occurred...

...On April 20, 2010, the biggest oil explosion in history occurred. The incident took place in the Gulf of Mexico on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig leased by British Petroleum (BP). This tragedy claimed the lives of 11 BP employees and injured 17 employees. The incident occurred due to BP’s failure to take safety precautions and its focus on keeping costs low. In order to restore its image, BP created a response website titled “Gulf of Mexico Restoration”. This website uses the following three verbal and visual strategies to repair its reputation: a video titled “Committed to the Gulf” to express its commitment to the Gulf and America, a green header titled “Community Development in the Gulf States” to show how BP is restoring the economy, and a slide show of BP’s employees operating in more efficient ways to reveal its dedication to sustainability. BP uses a video of the Gulf, employees, and tourists to express its commitment to the Gulf and America. The video shows BP’s Operations Manager Fred Lemond stating that “BP has paid over 23 billion dollars to help people who were affected by the crisis and also cleanup costs” (BP, 2013). The video also shows “The reopening of the Gulf to tourism and people enjoying the water, which appears to be clean” (BP, 2013). Lemond, also illustrates that “BP is committed to America by creating 250,000 jobs in America and investing more in America than any other country” (BP, 2013). According to Cain Burdeau from The Huffington Post, “BP’s video...

...On April 20, 2010 the BP licensed Transocean deep water drilling rig exploded, killing 11 people and injuring another 17.Roughly, 4.9 million barrels of oil poured into the Gulf of Mexico for 87 subsequent days. Days after the accident British Petroleum’s stock dropped by 2% due to stockholders worries of cleanup costs and upcoming legal claims. In order to mitigate the damage done to their image BP created a new portion of their website called the “Gulf of Mexico Restoration.” BP wanted to show the public that it was doing everything possible to restore the Gulf of Mexico’s local economy and environment to what it was before the accident. To show its commitment to cleaning up the Gulf, BP uses statistics showing how it is putting full effort into the restoration, favorable wording and a campaign to distance itself as much as possible from taking full responsibility, and powerful images to paint a picture of what kind of efforts it is putting into the Gulf. Without using these strategies, the public and investors alike would see BP in a completely different light. In order to illustrate it cares about and is committed to Gulf restoration BP provides a chart of payments it has made on the main page of the Restoration of the Gulf. In order to do this BP makes sure anyone that accesses this portion of its site will see what efforts were put in by BP. BP has pumped $14 billion into the oil spill response and clean up. This alone shows that BP is doing all that it can to...

Bp 2010 Oil Spill

...When you think of the BP Oil Spill of 2010, what comes to mind? Recently, an ad has been aired from BP Oil Company, showing a married couple who owned a restaurant and their account of the oil spill. In this television commercial, Bob and Brooke Kar, owners of the La Famille restaurant, discussed the affects and aftermath of the spill to their business. They were forcefully put out of business because their fishermen and shrimpers were unable to supply them with fresh seafood. This restaurant prides themselves on serving local seafood and the “best gumbo in town.” Unfortunately, that ceased the restaurant’s operations when the devastation occurred. Prior to this ad, the BP oil Spill made major headlines, both locally and nationally. People all around were frustrated that something as simple as plugging up the leak took several months to accomplish. The people of the Gulf Coast who owned hotels, restaurants, fishermen, shrimpers, and other tourist attractions had to shut down their businesses and struggle to find other work to support themselves, being that their livelihood was taken away from them. Many people at the time were frustrated and disturbed because they were not getting the results promised to them. It had become so out of control that people began pointing fingers not only to BP, but to even the President of the United States, who was being blamed for not doing enough. The oil tycoon became so desperate and under a lot pressure, the media stepped in and even regular...

The details of this case are alarming for a number of reasons and the most critical point that resonates throughout the entire paper, is that profit margins exceed any other concerns, to the point that even death could not convince them to make the changes to their company culture. The cycle of errors came to a complete pause, on the evening of April 20, 2010 when a “serious of explosions rocked the Deepwater Horizon, a mobile offshore drilling rig operated by BP in the Gulf of Mexico” according to (Roberto Pg.1) and one that saw a serious of catastrophically events, that would change the lives of many. That fateful night under the cover of darkness, eleven people died and several other encountered injuries that required medical attention and rescue. This occurred as direct fault of equipment, when the blowout preventer failed. The device is designed...

...The BP oil spill and its impact will be felt in the Gulf of Mexico region for years, if not decades. In the months after the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded off the coast of Louisiana in April 2010, it's estimated that almost five million barrels of oil gushed from the seabed and into the Gulf, making it the worst oil spill in history. Now that the flow of oil has stopped, the scope of the catastrophe is coming into focus, and attention is turning to how things will play out in the court system. This article looks at some of the legal issues raised by the BP oil spill, including legal options for businesses and individuals looking to get back on their financial feet after the oil spill. (For in-depth information on filing a claim with BP's $20 billion compensation fund, see Nolo's article BP Oil Spill: Filing a Claim With BP's Compensation Fund.) The BP Oil Spill: Types of Lawsuits The BP oil spill has already prompted the filing of thousands of lawsuits. Businesses and workers have seen their livelihoods suffer or even disappear in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and Texas. Families and individuals in the Gulf region worry about the health hazards posed by the chemicals used to disperse and clean up the oil. And, with its dubious distinction as the largest environmental disaster in U.S. history, the BP oil spill has inflicted immeasurable devastation on the Gulf's coastline, wetlands, wildlife, and ecosystems. ...competitive) segments do you think BP considered or didn’t consider prior to their drilling of the Gulf Coast? What should the wedding business owners now consider in their external environment? BP decided to drill in the Gulf Coast mostly because of the oil availability and competition. Opportunity was definitely considered by BP. The North Sea was saturated with other oil companies and BP saw an opportunity in the Gulf of Mexico (Pour, 2011). The segment that BP did not do well is the environmental factors around the rig that could make it extremely difficult to repair or monitor when troubles occur. The deep water makes it difficult for them to ensure the cement foundation was sealed properly, and pressure tests were misinterpreted by engineers prior to the explosion (Mullins, 2010). The wedding business owners are now facing the threat from these drilling rigs. The oil industry has a long track of catastrophic failures, so a disaster like the BP spill might happen again. They should consider other business opportunities to complement their current business model in case a spill or leakage occurs. 2. How should BP have handled an external environmental analysis and what environmental changes and trends (opportunities and threats) might they have discovered? BP is one of the biggest oil companies and it has a very strong market and geographical presence around the world (MBAskool.com, 2014). As demands for natural gas and oil increase, the company finds itself...

...Since April of 2010, BP Oil Company has been working to repair the damages of an oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. According to Do Something, an environmental website, have reported the death and injury of 28, more than 8,000 animals dead within six months, and 16,000 miles of coastline pollution (11 Facts about the BP Oil Spill). Many accounts blame this catastrophe on BP’s neglect to properly build and maintain machinery. Several clean up workers and fisherman have been affected due to this oil spill (Reed 35). People living near the coast line has been affected due to polluted air and water. Many children had been sick and they had problem breathing fresh air. BP’s ways of “cutting corners” are a point of interest when considering the factors leading to the Deep-water Horizon Oil Spill. There were several issues with this oil spill: professional issues, ethics and new technology issues, legal, regulatory and political, safety issues, and environmental issues. If BP would have taken care of all these issues there had been no oil spill. According to the official federal report, BP’s management cut corners in many areas, especially during the installation of the drill. While drilling the drill pipe got stuck and the engineering had to redesign the parameters but completely cut corners to drill the fastest way possible, which was the start of BP’s problems. Events leading up to the Deepwater Horizon incident led one to question the values and motives of the British Petroleum...

...BP OIL SPILL Under the Deepwater Horizon, an offshore drilling ring of British Petroleum (BP) caused an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The incident occurred on April 20th 2010, where equipment failed and caused the explosion sinking the ring, and causing the death of 11 workers and more than 17 workers injured. The British based energy company also faced other problems at the site of the oil spill. More than 40 million gallons (estimated data) of oil spewed into the Gulf of Mexico. Oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a very serious threat for the wildlife as it causes water pollution. The oil spill effected many coastal areas in the US, like the Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida. The oil spill disaster strongly damaged wildlife cycle in the Gulf of Mexico, and many species were thrown into extinction. Similarly, thousands of businesses were thrown into extinction. Many people has questioned the ethical decisions and core value system that BP used to cut corners with the accident; namely, the race to maximize profits at all costs. We are all aware that one of the main causes that let to the disaster were the result of bad decisions, in which a less expensive option (whether to run a test or use a particular kind casing pipe, for example) would save lives. There has been “zero dollars spent on research concerning how to handle oil spills for off-shore drilling by BP despite the company's NET profits - above and beyond all salaries, bonuses, or overhead costs- of...

...As we all know, the BP spill of 2010 was both catastrophic and costly. In April 2010, BP’s Transocean drilling rig Deep water Horizon sank in the Gulf of Mexico killing over 10 people and spewing more than 200 million gallons of oil into our ocean water. This historic and devastating spill is now labeled as worst in U.S. history due to its crippling economic factors throughout Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. It has taken us a year to restore our relationships and our strong presence in the energy sector so we must have a plan in place to get us back on track. In the presentation I will be discussing BP’s planning function of management as it relates to the organization’s goals and strategies. I will then discuss the influence that legal issues, ethics, and corporate social responsibility have had on management planning at BP. Last, I will analyze the influence that legal issues, ethics, and corporate social responsibility have had on management planning at BP. Global demand for energy is expected to increase by 50% between now and 2030. Eighty-five percent of the energy to meet this demand is expected to come from fossil fuels (BP.com, 2012). In order for BP to recover and tap into this 50% increase, we must first plan and analyze our current situation. In this unique industry, anticipating the future has become even more important than before. We must first create a plan that will not only guide the recovery process...

Macondo Prospect was a BP operated project, and one of the oil spill disasters that has been considered to be one of the most destructive accidents on marine environment. In fact, it has been considered the most expensive and life threatening accident in the petroleum industry. The disaster was an explosion in a deep-sea oil drilling facility owned by BP Company, in which the resultant explosion caused the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oilrig, killing 11 people in the incident. The disaster let free a gush of oil from under the seabed, flowing for an estimated three months. The result of the BP oil disaster was indeed catastrophic not just too marine life, but also to all other sectors of the economy that depended either directly or indirectly on marine environment (Alexander, 2010).
