Bread vs. Butter
Malnutrition has always been a part of our country’s dilemmas. It poses numerous threats to the health and welfare of our fellow Filipinos, and also our nation’s future. Its two main forms are undernutrition, which is extremely evident among impoverished communities, and overnutrition, also a severe case which people tend to overlook. Eradicating these elements of malnutrition can be very difficult, especially for a third world country like the Philippines. However, overnutrition, which is manifested in either an overweight or obese individual, can be resolved in a very simple way.
An article about a recent study explains which macronutrient intake, specifically with fats or carbohydrates, must be reduced in order to attain weight loss. The said article, which is entitled “Low Fat Diets could be better for Weight Loss than Cutting Carbs” and authored by Jonathan O’Callaghan, exposed the truth about the long debate concerning the effectiveness of reduction in fat or carbohydrate consumption on weight loss. Moreover, the article takes its claims from a study by the US National Institutes of Health which was published in a scientific journal named Cell Metabolism. The results showed that reducing fat intake can be beneficial for those who aspire to trim their weight. Also, the methodology of the study and its limitations were visibly mentioned. This would be very helpful to readers, specifically to those who would want to lose weight and to those who would want to exceed the stated limitations and further refine the research. Lastly, the addition of a commentary from an expert in nutrition and dietetics in University of Oxford which states that the best diet for losing weight is the diet that one can manage and stick to, whether it may be for fat or carbohydrate intake reduction, flawlessly sealed the article.
In conclusion, the article written by...

Bread Is the Best Thing Before Sliced Bread

...Bread is the best thing since sliced bread Defined by Kerr and Thomson (1998) as a “food made of flour or meal and baked”, is a popular and commonly eaten food in many countries (Baker 2006). The practice of buttering bread, however, is perhaps a little controversial. Crusty (2006) sees bread and butter together, not only as tasty and satisfying, but also as a classic food combination. This opinion is questioned, however, by Ciabatta (2007) who suggests that some breads, particularly open-textured Mediterranean types, are better served more naturally without fatty spreads. He further describes how the flavour of bread can be enhanced by the use of olive oil for dipping. It is apparent, therefore, that not only is there discrepancy in whether bread should in fact be served on its own, but also regarding the type of butter, spread or oil that is most appropriate as an accompaniment. Indeed, Lardy et al (2007) discuss the overwhelming selection available and suggests that choice needs to be based on many different aspects. Considerations should include intended use, taste, colour and nutritional content. It would seem from this list that many of these aspects are quite subjective, with one person, for example, preferring the taste and colour of butter over margarine. Even nutritional content may vary in importance and significance between individuals. Although intended use would appear to be the one area where rationale should underpin choice, Lardy et al (2007) do not......

...“The DRI recommendations for nutrient intake include four sets of values. The Estimated Average Requirements are average amounts of nutrients or other dietary components required by healthy individuals in a population. They are determined using experimental data on nutrient needs and are used in assessing the adequacy of a population's food supply or typical intake. They are not appropriate for evaluating an individual's intake but are used to calculate the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs). The RDAs recommend specific amounts of nutrients and other dietary components to meet the needs of most healthy people. When there is not enough data about nutrient requirements to establish EARs and RDAs, are set, based on what healthy people typically eat. RDA or AI values can be used as goals for individual intake and to plan and evaluate individual diets, they are meant to represent the amounts that most healthy people should consume, on average, over several days or even weeks, not each and every day. Because they are set high enough to meet the needs of almost all healthy people, intake below the RDA or AI does not necessarily mean that an individual is deficient, but the risk of deficiency is greater than if the individual consumed the recommended amount” (Wiley Plus, 2012). Based on this I would say that my intake for the day of September 7, 2012 followed the guidelines very well. “The human body requires many vitamins and minerals in order to......
