Breaking A Bag Of Peanuts

I will never forget this one experience that I had while eating a bag of peanuts on an airplane. Before there were peanut allergies and the need to purchase airplane food, passengers used to get free bags of peanuts that were somewhat difficult to open. Of course, I was determined to open my bag without any help, despite my mother’s offer. I’ve always been a bit stubborn that way. Now, I knew that I shouldn’t rip the bag open with my teeth because then the peanuts would fall out while I was eating them. I had to think of a different way. So, there I was, trying to pull the bag open from both sides, struggling to grip onto the slippery plastic. Well, my efforts were successful: the peanuts flew out of the bag, and several of them landed softly

The Bean Called Peanut

...The Bean Called Peanut When given this writing assignment, I first thought of all the things I know about a peanut. I thought of the simple things like a peanut is a nut that is brown and grows inside a pod. What I did not immediately think about what the actual purpose of this essay—to write about what I observed about the peanut given to me by my instructor. I had grabbed five peanut shells out of the large bag that probably came from Costco. I chose one to observe and I decided on the one that seemed to have the most character on the outside. At first sight, the pod seemed to be brittle and weak due to the breakage of the outer shell which exposed the root-like veins. It was disproportionately shaped where one side was almost twice as large as the other side. The first thing that came to my mind when I looked at the shape of this peanut was the ultrasound picture of a fetus. It was bent in the center and one side looked like a head. I was immediately distracted by the thought of whether the peanut was salted or unsalted, so I licked the shell to find that it was salted. The texture against my tongue was rough and almost fuzzy and I could also feel the pores and veins of the inner part of the shell. I began to rub the shell with my finger and experienced similar feeling as I did with my tongue, but against my skin it reminded me of the how the bottom of my dog’s paws feel. I examined the imperfections of the shell and found a small pin size hole at the tip of...

Lagniappe Ingredients In The Crawfish Boil

...kitchen into the pot. With these additions, it is important to keep a mental timer going and have a general idea of how long they take to cook. Some veggies will take a little longer than the crawfish, while others will be ready soon after they hit the boiling water. Overcooked ingredients can turn to mush or disintegrate in the pot. Since the crawfish are the main ingredient, figure out how long you will be cooking them first, and use that time to gauge the other ingredients. Anything cooking longer than the crawfish should be added before, and anything requiring less time can be added after. If you are unsure of how long something takes to cook, and need to check it periodically for doneness, place the ingredients in one of the plastic mesh bags that bulk produce comes in. This way, everything stays together and is easier to find in your boiling pot. After a few tries you will find what works and what doesn't. Before you know it, you will have come up with your own personal boiling recipe additions. If you are the experimental type, you probably have your basic routine down to a science, and will try a new and different tweak every...

Sucre Exploration In Bolivia

...men and women gowned in traditional clothing and costumes. The women are skimpily dressed during the parades (especially during carnaval) with lots of makeup and skirts designed to twirl as they spin, often so high in the air one might see their undergarments. These mini-skirts are paired with a traditional lace top, Pocahontas-style pigtail braids and a tiny little hat that fits on the crown of their head in such a way you wonder to yourself how it manages to stay in place while they dance. Life in Sucre takes you back in time to a place where common sense is mainstream and tasks are carried out in the manner we have always known to do them – manually. If a sidewalk needs replaced, a team of men are out there with shovels and pick-axes breaking it apart then reassembling by hand. Safety Despite the fact that Bolivia is among the “poorest” countries in South America, the rate of theft and violent crime is by far lower in Bolivia than it is in neighboring countries such as Brazil, Peru and Argentina. Generally speaking, the threat of theft or crime is less in Sucre than in any major city in the United States. Precaution should be taken against pick-pockets which would account for the majority of crime that does occur in the city. When traveling in the city, it’s best to keep money in a wrist wrap, a money belt, a fanny pack (don’t worry, they are still in style in Bolivia), or a money holder that wraps around the neck and can be tucked inside the shirt. Don’t create an opportunistic...

...This semester, throw the book at sales tax, limited store hours and sky high gas prices by buying books online instead of from bricks-and mortar-bookstores. The price of textbooks has shot through the roof in recent years, breaking many a student's budget. While the used section of school bookstores might offer some price relief, many online stores often carry the same, brand-new book for the price of a used copy, or even sell used copies themselves. The benefits of online book buying are numerous. Most importantly, buying books online is almost always cheaper. New book prices are usually significantly lower online, often at least 20 percent reduced and occasionally up to half-off. Also, unless you live in the same state as the online store headquarters, your purchase is free of sales tax, saving you another five to nine percent. Plus you avoid spending money on transportation to and from the bookstore, and you re not tempted by a sweet-smelling latte while shopping. The savings of shopping online really do add up. It's also more convenient to buy books online. Online bookstores are open 24/7, so if your daytime schedule is all tied up, you can surf and shop while the rest of the world is sleeping. Online shopping takes less time because you don't have to find the actual book on the shelf, nor is travel time an issue. With this in mind, you might even be able to place your order during short daytime breaks at a wi-fi cafe or on your PDA. Nothing in life is perfect, and there...

...The Simple Plan Run Smart, and Slim Down Eat Right, The Simple Plan From the editors of r 1 The Simple Plan Your Personal Calorie number Before you start figuring how you’re going to create a calorie deficit, you need to know how many calories your body requires to maintain the weight you are now. That calorie number is unique to you. It depends on many things—your size, your gender, your age, and how active you are. Roughly speaking, the more active you are and the younger you are, the more calories it takes to maintain your current weight. Bigger folks need more calories to fuel them; as they start to lose pounds, they’ll require fewer. Just go to www.runnersworld.com/ rybo and go to the basal metabolic rate (BMR) calculator, where you can enter your numbers. This tool measures how many calories you need each day to maintain your current weight if you’re sitting around doing absolutely nothing—and how many you need if you’re more active. Once you know how many calories you need to maintain your weight, you can make some well-informed decisions about the food you’re consuming and your exercise. You can eat less or move more to get the scale to move, too. n Calorie Math: A Quick Review Let’s strip this idea down to the simplest possible terms. Your body burns calories every day. If you eat more calories than your body burns, those calories are stored on the body as fat. If you eat fewer calories than your body burns, you lose fat. In other words, a calorie...

Pregnancy Tips

...Week 1 Speak with your doctor about adding a prenatalmultivitamin to your morning routine. At least 400 micrograms of folic acid every day can help prevent certain birth defects that affect your baby's brain, heart, and spinal cord, especially if you take it before you conceive and in the early weeks of your pregnancy. See that your supplements contain added goodies like calcium, iron, and Vitamin B12 as well. Week 2 Right now, you're just dying to find out: Am I pregnant or not? Unfortunately, you'll need to stick it out a bit longer. About four days after your egg is fertilized, it begins producing a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), which pregnancy tests can detect in about another week -- first in your blood (via a test at your doctor's office) and then in your urine (which an at-home screening would spot). Week 3 Get yourself a good doctor -- pronto! Having a healthcare provider you like and trust is key. After all, this is the person who will guide you through your entire pregnancy, labor, and delivery, along with the millions of questions, tests, and emotional ups and downs along the way. If you don't currently have an ob-gyn you love, ask friends, family, and coworkers for recommendations or research practices until you find someone you feel comfortable with. And, hey, your choices are not limited to regular obstetricians. You might also want to investigate alternative or additional types of care -- including midwives or family physicians Week...
