Brilliant Public Speaking 2
At the start of this video you hear a powerful statement “No one cares about what you want to say they only care about what they want to hear.” This statement could not be any closer to the truth. Communicating effectively has nothing to do with what you are saying it has everything to do with communicating in a way where your audience can hear you. In other words it is very important to know your audience. You could be talking about how to cure cancer but if your audience is not interested, or engaged in the conversation then they will not be listening at all. You must always remember to have good quality content and know who you are talking to. Understand what kind of crowd you are dealing with so that you have the best chance of giving your best performance and leave feeling that your audience understood and heard what you said.
Out of all of the different practices discussed in the video, I found that the one that relates best to me is to act as if you are having a conversation with the audience. It is natural for most of us to hold a conversation as this is something we do on a daily basis. The conversation aspect of any speech will help the speaker to appear more natural and comfortable with the audience and invite better listening. As soon as a speaker steps in front of their audience the tone of the entire performance is set. If the speaker appears comfortable and confident at the start, more than likely they will be able to acceptance of the content being heard. The opposite works just the same. If the speaker is nervous and lacks confidence then the audience will pick up on that, and will not likely listen as well to what is being said.
The best advice that I could give someone about public speaking would be to understand your audience and know exactly who you are speaking to.

Brilliant Public Speaking 3
When I speak to an audience and I understand a bit of their background I am better able to use slang that they understand, joke about things in their field, and overall appear more knowledgeable. I also find that speaking about something I am passionate about and believe in helps to portray my passion to others. When I know an audience it helps me to deliver my message in the correct manner. I am not going to talk to a group of Grad students the same way I would speak to a class of Fifth Graders. My words and tone are able to change the more I know and understand who I am talking to. I also advise anyone giving a speech to just relax. It is hard to do this for a lot of people, but the more stressed you are the more the audience is going to see that and it will end up making things worse. Take a deep breath close your eyes and step up for your speech. Give it 30 seconds for the shock to wear off tell a joke and after the first laugh your speech will go great.

...Brilliant Public Speaking Brilliant Public Speaking June 22, 2014 June 22, 2014 BCOM/275 Christopher J. Brown BCOM/275 Christopher J. Brown 2014 2014 Brilliant Public Speaking The art of public speaking has been around for a very a long time and can be traced all the way back to ancient Greece which is almost 2500 years ago. The principles of speech and public speaking were drawn from the experience and practices of the ancient Greece and besides a few cultural and societal modifications the principles have virtually stayed intact. The definition of public speaking is defined as speaking to a group of people in a structured, deliberate manner intended to inform, influence, or entertain the listeners (Public Speaking, 2007). In the video entitled “Brilliant Public Speaking” it has touched on points that have tied into the reading for this week on many different levels. One such lesson that stands out is the lesson on persuasion and although you may not consider a public speaker to be one who is persuasive it does indeed apply. For example, I have been instructed by my organization to try and procure benefactors in order to sell computers that will cut down on the processing time and labor hours for their organization. Since I have to persuade them in order to buy my product I am must be a good effective public speaker in order sell my point and product. Another example would be if I were going in for a job interview for a potential employer I am going to have to...

Brilliant Public Speaking

...In the online video Brilliant Public Speaking, Newman (2013) stated that “no one cares what you want to say, what they care about is what they want to hear,” that’s a very powerful statement to open this video with, and really hit home with me. In any public speaking event where I have been one of the speakers, I always delivered the message with the intention of delivering what I wanted to say, not what the audience wanted to hear. Five minutes into this video proved that my way of delivering a message, may not have always had the impact on my listeners that I had intended. This video demonstrates some of the best ways to deliver an effective speech, and touches on some key points to not only captivate your audience, but to insure that the message that was intended be delivered , in fact is received by the audience. All of the subjects that were discussed in the video are key elements in delivering a powerful and effective speech. There is one key point though, that is most significant when trying to captivate your audience, and that is the opening. If you are not able to capture your audience in the first few minutes of your speech, there is a good chance you will never make that connection with them, and your message will be completely lost. If your message is not received, not only is this a waste of your time, but a waste of your audiences’ time as well. If your speech was sales oriented, the lack of a powerful and memorable speech could have a negative impact on...

...Brilliant Public Speaking XXXXXXXXX BCOM/275 25 June 2014 xxxxxxxxxxxx Brilliant Public Speaking The video opens with a very powerful statement “No one cares about what you want to say they only care about what they want to hear.” (Brilliant Public Speaking) This statement sums up every reason to “know your audience.” A speaker can be revealing the secrets of the universe but if the audience is not interested in the content it will not matter how well the speech can be delivered. When speaking to an audience, it is equally important to have quality content and to have an understanding of your audience. If a speaker ensures both content and delivery are directed towards the audience, he or she will have the best chance for a good performance. Of the best practices, the one I found most interesting is to treat the presentation as if you are holding a conversation with the audience. We hold conversations every day so if the speaker feels like he or she is having a conversation the presentation will appear more natural. The first few moments are vital to the success of the performance. If a speaker appears comfortable and confident from the beginning, I think that the audience will be more accepting of mistakes later in the speech. If a speaker seems to be nervous and lacks confidence, the audience may not listen as intently as they should. The best advice that I could give someone about public speaking would be to know his or her subject. When I am speaking to an...

Brilliant Public Speaking

...The Video, Brilliant Public Speaking, relates to the topics this week as public speaking is an important part of communication, and a common need in the workplace, whether it be in front of small groups or large groups, public speaking is something that occurs on a fairly regular basis in the workplace. When listening to the different segments of this video, the section that applied to me the most was the section about overcoming nerves. Anytime that I have had to speak in front of large groups, I instantly am nervous. There are even points where I felt myself stuttering or using small words as filler while I thought about where I was on the subject matter as the nervousness caused my mind to go blank. Some of the techniques that were mentioned in this video that I would like to try to use the next time I have to give a presentation are to smile and practice in the room that I will be presenting in. In the video, it spoke about knowing your surroundings before giving a speech, and while most of the times I have had to do public speaking in a public setting it had been at the same location, I have never tried to practice there first. I feel that this could be a great asset to preparation. Another tool is turning the nerves into excitement by smiling. When I get nervous, I tend not to smile as I am so focused on trying to not be nervous, I forget the basics of facial expressions and how the audience reacts to this. If I had to give someone advice on how to effectively...

How to Survive a Job Interview

...Warden Sean Goatley-Soan COM110 26 January 2015 Communication Improvement Profile Lee Lacocca once said that, “You can have brilliant ideas, but if you can not get them across, your ideas will not get you anywhere.” This quote is very true because you have to be able to communicate with people on a day-to-day basis, whether it is verbal or nonverbal communication. I am currently an employee at Monical’s pizza as a waitress in my hometown, and I have to communicate with my co-workers and customers. At work I consider myself a very outgoing person because I am always looking for someone to talk to, but I am more comfortable around strangers at work because so many different ages of people come into our restaurant. When I get around larger groups of people that are around my age I get really shy and find myself being too quiet so the chances of me meeting new people are very slim. The sad thing is that I love to meet new people because having friends is great, but I am just so bad at making small talk. I have only performed one speech in my whole life and it made me very nervous. My speeches are always prepared well in advance and are very well organized, but I have a very hard time doing the things that I have planned to do during the speech, such as hand gestures and eye contact. I definitely need to work on my writing skills as well as my speaking skills. My first goal that I hope to accomplish this year is to better prepare myself for class/speeches. I hope to accomplish...

Depresion in Children

...Speeches Sweaty palms, perspiration running down your face, dry mouth; these are all the signs of someone who is nervous about giving a speech. When thinking about speaking sometimes it brings fear. It is important to remember that public speaking is a part of everyday life. You may not have a large audience, but you do have an audience and you must convey what you are trying to get across to them. Public speaking is another form of conversation. There is as rich history in public speaking. As early as ancient Greece speeches were required as part of the education. Plato said that Rhetoric is the art of winning the soul by discourse. Aristotle identified the basic elements of good speech and persuasion as ethos, logos, and pathos. The ethos (credibility, believability) of the speaker was important; the logos (logic) behind any conclusions drawn by the speaker during the course of the speech needed to be valid and clear; and the pathos (emotional appeals) were important in making human connections between the speaker and the listener. In the Bible there are many examples of this process. “And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain, and when he was set his disciples came unto him. And he opened his mouth and taught them saying, Blessed are the poor is spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.” (Thompson King James Version Bible, Psalm 139:1-10)This familiar...

Self-Analysis

...Coletha Mack CST 100-040W 3/5/12 Self-Analysis #2 My overall feeling about my persuasive speech is not a great one. I felt like I could have been more prepared and organized. While I was delivering the speech, it seemed as if I wasn’t holding the audience attention. I must say out of all of the speeches I was more afraid to perform. It could have been because it wasn’t a topic I was really comfortable with. During the speech I keep it upbeat. I brought in positive energy, while keeping everyone laughing. I projected my voice rather nicely. I used my hands to show emphasis on the subject. If I had to do the speech all over again, I would use notes cards. Doing it at the minute would not have been an option, regardless of what was going on with my personal life. Next time, I will stick with one subject and build from there. In comparison to my other speeches I think this one was the worst. I set goals for myself and I think I only deliver on keeping the energy up. For this speech I decided to use a cause and effect. To me cause and effect speeches are easier to write because it shows how something you do can cause you something bad to happen or good. You really don’t have to try to persuade too much because the truth is in the pudding so to speak as long as you have creditable sources. I wanted to come across nonchalant but seriously about the subject. The reason I said nonchalant because people would be more receptacle of what I have to say, the subject of cosmetic...

Presentations skills and public speaking skills are very useful in many aspects of work and life. Speech Reflection

...I find giving speeches is not my strong point, but that’s why I decided to take this time to clarify my strong and weak areas in my presentation. My presentation was to the benefits of buying and receiving produce and livestock from an organic farmer, my specific purpose was to persuade and inform my audience what is really in the food they were buying that they thought was safe. My audience got to learn how the industrial food industry is generally modifying our produce and meat and the many benefits of supporting an organic farmer. As I analyze myself on my speech performance, I believe the body of my speech was the most effective material for my presentation. I had a lot of good information to back my topic up of why Organic farming is the best possible way to eat. The people that eat Organic don’t have to worry about consuming chemicals, pesticides and unnatural material that our bodies shouldn’t be consuming. For the content of my Introduction, I think it needed more work and practice. At first I tried to write down and memorize the script, but I got nervous and started to read parts of my presentation to the audience. Therefore, I sounded like I didn’t practice a lot and had umms interrupting and having an effect on my overall voice, tone and eye contact. My introduction also lacked a strong attention-getter in the beginning. I would have changed the attention-getting to something more interesting that shocked my audience and made them think. I see that my biggest weaknesses...

...communication skills will help anybody out with getting a good job and help them move up the ladder. Speeches are a very good way to improve your communication skills; it forces you to face your fears of speaking and ultimately improves your speaking. Speeches have never been my favorite assignment do to in class. I am a shy person and talking in front a group of people is a little nerve-racking. I am a great communicator when I am talking to my friends or family, but talking in front of a group of people is much harder. My parents say I mumble and I believe I mumble to. That is an issue I need to work on, and will only be fixed if I talk more. I also do not like reading work that I have done. I will gladly give a speech that was not written by me. I believe other people would describe me a good communicator even though I have never asked somebody if I am a good communicator. People get what I have to say so that is why I think I am a good communicator. I have never done public speaking only a few speeches in high school. I did not get good grades on those speeches in high school because I did not do enough research and did not pick topics that I knew. I hope I can improve my speeches a lot this semester. The biggest goal I would like to accomplish this semester is public speaking apprehension. I would like to eliminate or greatly reduce my apprehension. I will do this by the ideas listed in the book.
