In the online video Brilliant Public Speaking, Newman (2013) stated that “no one cares what you want to say, what they care about is what they want to hear,” that’s a very powerful statement to open this video with, and really hit home with me. In any public speaking event where I have been one of the speakers, I always delivered the message with the intention of delivering what I wanted to say, not what the audience wanted to hear. Five minutes into this video proved that my way of delivering a message, may not have always had the impact on my listeners that I had intended. This video demonstrates some of the best ways to deliver an effective speech, and touches on some key points to not only captivate your audience, but to insure that the message that was intended be delivered , in fact is received by the audience.
All of the subjects that were discussed in the video are key elements in delivering a powerful and effective speech. There is one key point though, that is most significant when trying to captivate your audience, and that is the opening. If you are not able to capture your audience in the first few minutes of your speech, there is a good chance you will never make that connection with them, and your message will be completely lost. If your message is not received, not only is this a waste of your time, but a waste of your audiences’ time as well. If your speech was sales oriented, the lack of a powerful and memorable speech could have a negative impact on your sales. During the opening to any speech, whenever possible, the use of a visual statement may be most effective. The best example in the video was referring to the woman who was an image consultant. She was speaking to them about appearance and what they should wear at work. When she came on stage, she was wearing an outfit that was completely the opposite of what should be worn at…...

...Brilliant Public Speaking XXXXXXXXX BCOM/275 25 June 2014 xxxxxxxxxxxx Brilliant Public Speaking The video opens with a very powerful statement “No one cares about what you want to say they only care about what they want to hear.” (Brilliant Public Speaking) This statement sums up every reason to “know your audience.” A speaker can be revealing the secrets of the universe but if the audience is not interested in the content it will not matter how well the speech can be delivered. When speaking to an audience, it is equally important to have quality content and to have an understanding of your audience. If a speaker ensures both content and delivery are directed towards the audience, he or she will have the best chance for a good performance. Of the best practices, the one I found most interesting is to treat the presentation as if you are holding a conversation with the audience. We hold conversations every day so if the speaker feels like he or she is having a conversation the presentation will appear more natural. The first few moments are vital to the success of the performance. If a speaker appears comfortable and confident from the beginning, I think that the audience will be more accepting of mistakes later in the speech. If a speaker seems to be nervous and lacks confidence, the audience may not listen as intently as they should. The best advice that I could give someone about public speaking would be to know his or her subject. When I am speaking to......

Brilliant Public Speaking

...Brilliant Public Speaking BCOM/275 Brilliant Public Speaking 2 At the start of this video you hear a powerful statement “No one cares about what you want to say they only care about what they want to hear.” This statement could not be any closer to the truth. Communicating effectively has nothing to do with what you are saying it has everything to do with communicating in a way where your audience can hear you. In other words it is very important to know your audience. You could be talking about how to cure cancer but if your audience is not interested, or engaged in the conversation then they will not be listening at all. You must always remember to have good quality content and know who you are talking to. Understand what kind of crowd you are dealing with so that you have the best chance of giving your best performance and leave feeling that your audience understood and heard what you said. Out of all of the different practices discussed in the video, I found that the one that relates best to me is to act as if you are having a conversation with the audience. It is natural for most of us to hold a conversation as this is something we do on a daily basis. The conversation aspect of any speech will help the speaker to appear more natural and comfortable with the audience and invite better listening. As soon as a speaker steps in front of their audience the tone of the entire performance is set. If the speaker appears comfortable and confident at......

...Brilliant Public Speaking Brilliant Public Speaking June 22, 2014 June 22, 2014 BCOM/275 Christopher J. Brown BCOM/275 Christopher J. Brown 2014 2014 Brilliant Public Speaking The art of public speaking has been around for a very a long time and can be traced all the way back to ancient Greece which is almost 2500 years ago. The principles of speech and public speaking were drawn from the experience and practices of the ancient Greece and besides a few cultural and societal modifications the principles have virtually stayed intact. The definition of public speaking is defined as speaking to a group of people in a structured, deliberate manner intended to inform, influence, or entertain the listeners (Public Speaking, 2007). In the video entitled “Brilliant Public Speaking” it has touched on points that have tied into the reading for this week on many different levels. One such lesson that stands out is the lesson on persuasion and although you may not consider a public speaker to be one who is persuasive it does indeed apply. For example, I have been instructed by my organization to try and procure benefactors in order to sell computers that will cut down on the processing time and labor hours for their organization. Since I have to persuade them in order to buy my product I am must be a good effective public speaker in order sell my point and product. Another example would be if I were going in for a job interview for a potential employer I am going to have......

Brilliant Public Speaking

...The Video, Brilliant Public Speaking, relates to the topics this week as public speaking is an important part of communication, and a common need in the workplace, whether it be in front of small groups or large groups, public speaking is something that occurs on a fairly regular basis in the workplace. When listening to the different segments of this video, the section that applied to me the most was the section about overcoming nerves. Anytime that I have had to speak in front of large groups, I instantly am nervous. There are even points where I felt myself stuttering or using small words as filler while I thought about where I was on the subject matter as the nervousness caused my mind to go blank. Some of the techniques that were mentioned in this video that I would like to try to use the next time I have to give a presentation are to smile and practice in the room that I will be presenting in. In the video, it spoke about knowing your surroundings before giving a speech, and while most of the times I have had to do public speaking in a public setting it had been at the same location, I have never tried to practice there first. I feel that this could be a great asset to preparation. Another tool is turning the nerves into excitement by smiling. When I get nervous, I tend not to smile as I am so focused on trying to not be nervous, I forget the basics of facial expressions and how the audience reacts to this. If I had to give someone advice on how to......

Whether in a small or large setting, many people struggle with public speaking. But there are many methods as to which you can help improve your public speaking skills and raise your confidence. Communicating in the workplace may require you to speak in a group setting so it is important to feel comfortable in your surroundings. There were many recommended practices that you can use to help improve your public speaking. The one I felt was the most relevant to me was recording your self via video and audio. I feel that these would be the most helpful because I tend to fiddle with things, such as excessive hand movement. One thing I tend to do a lot is have something in my hands and play with them. It is things like this, which can cause distractions for your audience. Watching yourself perform helps you get visual aid as to what others see when you present to them. There are many things someone can do to effectively deliver a speech. The first thing is to know your topic is do not go out on the stage or up in front of a group without knowing what you are talking about. One other thing that I find could be extremely is the preparation and rehearsal of your speech or presentation. Not only does this help you build......

Brilliant Speaking

...Brilliant Public Speaking XXXXXXXXXXX BCOM 275 June 30th, 2014 Dr. Rankin   Brilliant Public Speaking After watching the “Brilliant Speaking Video”, I believe that I have so much more knowledge when it comes to speaking. I felt as if I kind of built more confidence especially with the tips that I’ve learned and never paid attention to before until I seen the video in this week’s chapter. In this week’s chapter, the video related to how language is important. Connecting with your audience emotionally is something that can persuade your audience on your beliefs. The video related to the chapter as to the benefits that you could receive from speaking. Being able to speak to people and make an impact by having them listen and believe in what you are saying and you have grabbed there attention is a start for a brilliant speaker. One of the best practices that were discussed in the video in which was more relevant to me was the timing. At times, I tend to make things too long and not just enough. This can make my speech very boring and uninteresting especially when trying to keep the audience’s attention. Learning to keep the audience interested by throwing a little sense of humor is definitely something that I will take with me. I believe that putting my emotions into some things will also benefit me in the end because that’s a way that the audience can connect with me. Another thing that interested me was staying hydrated. Drinking lots water the night before a......

...Brilliant Public Speaking Paper University of Phoenix BCOM275 Brilliant Speaking The video really addresses many of the facets that have been highlighted in our readings. It addresses that the qualities of a successful speaker of a small group are also the same qualities that are found in a speaker of large crowds. These qualities are needed in the workplace, and can help establish positive communication in the work team. Speaking is our primary method of communication when in person. So the most important part of communication is getting the message across. The video addresses how many people have a terrible fear of public speaking. The video claims that many people fear public speaking over death itself. I have a very hard time believing that, since a person could easily exaggerate their phobia. One of the practices that would be most relevant to my experience and fears would be to remember to make eye contact with the audience, and smile more. I have a terrible time doing this and I know it. Another great point that was given was to check out your surroundings before you give our speech. This will help you feel more comfortable. If I was to give advice to someone speaking, I would tell them that the crowd is only human, and that the people came there to listen. So basically be themselves and relax. The video also makes a point that it helps to turn the nervousness into excitement. While I have not done that personally I would be very interested to......

...In the video, “Brilliant Public Speaking” the experts discuss how to effectively communicate with the respective audience. The topics of the week coincide with the video because how information is transferred in the common factor. The experts provide solid advice on how to deliver an exceptional speech all while keeping the audience entertained. Building confidence to deliver a speech is one of the practices that I need to work on when it comes to public speaking. I have become better at it, since enrolling at University of Phoenix however, at times my nerves still get the best of me. I have always been the type of person that prefers to be behind the scenes when it comes to completing tasks. I do not have to be in the forefront or limelight to feel appreciated. Some of the practices the experts gave seemed to be common knowledge, such as the dress code, eating properly, and getting plenty of rest in the days leading up to the speech. I would share the information I learned that was provided in the video. There were so many valuable tips to pass along. I would first advise the perspective speaker to understand the audience that the information is to be given. I would discuss things such as choosing the appropriate subject matter, how to overcome nervousness and make it work to your benefit, conferring with the sponsors regarding the proper dress code, and how to practice the speech in the mirror prior to delivery. In conclusion, it is imperative to prepare for a......

Accepting Credibility

...Communication An outstanding communicator is one who distinguishes himself by the way he uses language. He normally makes eye contact while speaking, speaks fluently, concentrates on content of the conversation and thinks before speaking. Ineffective communication is speaking or writing in a way that lost and confuse your audience. Based on physical contact and observation on the television, our Prime Minister is an excellent example of a good communicator. On the other hand, someone I know to be an ineffective communicator is a news reporter. The Hon. Dean Barrow has good rhetoric. Numerous instances he has been confronted by the media and organizations unexpectedly and he always respond in a very clear and concise manner. Rarely would you find him stumbling over his words and he speaks fluently. On a visit to the Prime Minister I was given the opportunity to ask him questions and I can see that he thinks before he speaks, he speaks slowly yet answers quickly in simple language. The Prime Minister often uses concoction of jargonistic words arranged into convoluted sentences as an effective way of covering up ideas or answers to questions that are half-baked, obvious, or trivial which I believ is part of his communication strategy. He knows how to keep his audience attention. Reporters often tend to be directly, impromptu and most often does not exhibit characters and behaviors that make him or her to be believed and trusted by people. Our reporters in Belize tend to be......

Leaders with Character

..."When little men cast long shadows," said Walter Savage Landor, an English author of the turn of the nineteenth century, "it is a sign that the sun is setting." Mr. Landor was not speaking of short-statured men, although perhaps he had the diminutive Napoleon in mind. No, he was referring to ignoble men, those with unworthy ideals and ambitions. Such men are self-aggrandizing, interested only in their own promotion. Considering our political landscape, such men seem to be the rule rather than the exception. The current resident of the White House, reputed to be brilliant and motivational, seems to have few ideas, and those he does have are inimical to the traditions and principles of the nation he is supposed to be leading. Despite the President's popularity with nearly half the country, his record of unkept promises, division, and soaring debt marks him as one of the "little men" that Mr. Landor had in mind. And he certainly casts a long shadow, as Americans will be paying for the failure of his ideas for generations to come. A better-known quotation on leadership and character comes from America's sixteenth President, Abraham Lincoln: "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." This quotation—from a man who was tested as perhaps no other American chief executive has—makes it clear that character in leadership matters. Holding a position of leadership by definition implies holding power, and only people of good character...

How to Survive a Job Interview

...Warden Sean Goatley-Soan COM110 26 January 2015 Communication Improvement Profile Lee Lacocca once said that, “You can have brilliant ideas, but if you can not get them across, your ideas will not get you anywhere.” This quote is very true because you have to be able to communicate with people on a day-to-day basis, whether it is verbal or nonverbal communication. I am currently an employee at Monical’s pizza as a waitress in my hometown, and I have to communicate with my co-workers and customers. At work I consider myself a very outgoing person because I am always looking for someone to talk to, but I am more comfortable around strangers at work because so many different ages of people come into our restaurant. When I get around larger groups of people that are around my age I get really shy and find myself being too quiet so the chances of me meeting new people are very slim. The sad thing is that I love to meet new people because having friends is great, but I am just so bad at making small talk. I have only performed one speech in my whole life and it made me very nervous. My speeches are always prepared well in advance and are very well organized, but I have a very hard time doing the things that I have planned to do during the speech, such as hand gestures and eye contact. I definitely need to work on my writing skills as well as my speaking skills. My first goal that I hope to accomplish this year is to better prepare myself for class/speeches. I hope to......

Depresion in Children

...Speeches Sweaty palms, perspiration running down your face, dry mouth; these are all the signs of someone who is nervous about giving a speech. When thinking about speaking sometimes it brings fear. It is important to remember that public speaking is a part of everyday life. You may not have a large audience, but you do have an audience and you must convey what you are trying to get across to them. Public speaking is another form of conversation. There is as rich history in public speaking. As early as ancient Greece speeches were required as part of the education. Plato said that Rhetoric is the art of winning the soul by discourse. Aristotle identified the basic elements of good speech and persuasion as ethos, logos, and pathos. The ethos (credibility, believability) of the speaker was important; the logos (logic) behind any conclusions drawn by the speaker during the course of the speech needed to be valid and clear; and the pathos (emotional appeals) were important in making human connections between the speaker and the listener. In the Bible there are many examples of this process. “And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain, and when he was set his disciples came unto him. And he opened his mouth and taught them saying, Blessed are the poor is spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.” (Thompson King James Version Bible, Psalm 139:1-10)This......
