Bryan Stevenson
Bryan Stevenson was born November 1959. Stevenson was born in Milton, Delaware. He has been all across the world and experienced a lot of new and different things. Bryan Stevenson is a public-interest lawyer who has dedicated his career to helping the poor, the incarcerated and the condemned. He's the founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, an Alabama-based group that has won major legal challenges eliminating excessive and unfair sentencing, exonerating innocent prisoners on death row, confronting abuse of the incarcerated and the mentally ill and aiding children prosecuted as adults. EJI recently won an historic ruling in the U.S. Supreme Court holding that mandatory life-without-parole sentences for all children 17 or younger are unconstitutional. Mr. Stevenson’s work fighting poverty and challenging racial discrimination in the criminal justice system has won him numerous awards. He is a graduate of the Harvard Law School and the Harvard School of Government, and has been awarded 14 honorary doctorate degrees. Executive Director of EJI, has won national acclaim for his work challenging bias against the poor and people of color in the criminal justice system. Since graduating from Harvard Law School and the Harvard School of Government, he has assisted in securing relief for dozens of condemned prisoners, advocated for poor people and developed community-based reform litigation aimed at improving the administration of criminal justice. He also is on the law faculty at New York University School of Law. Stevenson’s work has won him national acclaim. In 1995, he was awarded the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship Award Prize. He is also a 1989 recipient of the Reebok Human Rights Award, the 1991 ACLU National Medal of Liberty, and in 1996, he was named the Public Interest Lawyer of the Year by the National Association of Public Interest Lawyers. In 2000, Stevenson received the Olaf Palme Prize in Stockholm, Sweden for international human rights and in 2004, he received the Award for Courageous Advocacy from the American College of Trial Lawyers and the Lawyer for the People Award from the National Lawyers Guild. In 2006, NYU presented Mr. Stevenson with its Distinguished Teaching Award. He has also received honorary degrees from several universities, including Yale University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Georgetown University School of Law. Stevenson has served as a visiting professor of law at the University Of Michigan School Of Law. He has also published several widely disseminated manuals on capital litigation and written extensively on criminal justice, capital punishment and civil rights issues.
I searched and searched and I couldn’t find any information about his wife and kid that a conversation with Bryan Stevenson, the celebrated death penalty defense lawyer and professor, might have an upbeat, even triumphant tone. One would be incorrect. Capital punishment, that contentious old emblem of the American criminal-justice system, is under fire. In recent months, California and Maryland followed eight other states in suspending operation of their death chambers. In 2006, the number of executions nationwide dropped to 53, the fewest in a decade, as governors, legislators and even some prosecutors questioned whether the ultimate punishment can be administered fairly and humanely. And so, one might assume that a conversation with Bryan Stevenson, the celebrated death penalty defense lawyer and professor, might have an upbeat, even triumphant tone. One would be incorrect. http://blogs.law.nyu.edu/magazine/2007/bryan-stevenson%E2%80%99s-death-defying-acts/ https://www.ted.com/speakers/bryan_stevenson

Analysis Of Just Mercy By Bryan Stevenson

...Chapter six of the book Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson begins with Stevenson working late one night in his law office in Birmingham, Alabama. He received a call from a woman whose teenaged grandson had been incarcerated for murder and sentenced to die. Several of Stevenson’s other clients were on death row for crimes they had committed when they were sixteen or seventeen years old. At that time, Alabama held the record for the highest number of juveniles sentenced to death, more than any other state in America and more than any other country in the world. Stevenson couldn’t represent the boy due to his many cases but he agreed to visit him in jail so he drove to the county courthouse and read the boy’s case file. Charlie, a young boy with...

The Importance Of Justice In Just Mercy By Bryan Stevenson

...It takes a hard working, compassionate lawyer with a talented team to make progress in delivering justice; In the novel Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, justice is a critical theme and important to understanding the novel. Equality is a major theme along with broken people deserve justice, and constantly working towards justice. Stevenson describes corruption, racism, cruelty, and the way they greatly affected American society at the time. These factors allowed the court systems to abuse people and accuse them solely because of their race or their financial status. Stevenson placed a great amount of emphasis throughout his novel on the importance of equality. Without equality, many of Stevenson’s clients would have still been sitting in jail...

...From HBR “The Dos and Don’ts of Work Email, from Emojis to Typos” by Andrew Brodsky APRIL 23, 2015 Imagine sending a detailed question to your boss and getting a one-word response: “No.” Is she angry? Offended by your email? Or just very busy? When I conduct research with organizations on the topic of communication, one of the most common themes raised by both employees and managers is the challenge of trying to communicate emotional or sensitive issues over email. Email, of course, lacks most normal cues for relaying emotion, such as tone of voice and facial expressions. But in many cases, using email is simply unavoidable. So how can you balance the need to communicate with avoiding the potential pitfalls of using emotion in email? Here are five concrete, research-based recommendations: Understand what drives how emails are interpreted. It is clear that people often misinterpret emotion in email, but what drives the direction of the misinterpretation? For one, people infuse their emotional expectations into how they read messages, regardless of the sender’s actual intent. Consider the email “Good job on the current draft, but I think we can continue to improve it.” Coming from a peer, this email will seem very collaborative; coming from a supervisor, it may seem critical. In addition to relative position (emails from people high in power tend to be perceived as more negative), there are other contextual factors to consider: The length of a relationship (emails from people...

...Alexandra Small AP Language & Compositon The Catcher in the Rye and Impulse both have similarities between their narrators and characters. Impulse is a very powerful book with mature subject matters, but even so, it related very well to The Catcher in the Rye. The three characters in Impulse are all admitted into the Aspen Springs psychiatric hospital for all wanting to end their lives with different motives. Holden can relate to the three characters and mostly their lives before the psychiatric hospital. Through quotes, texts, songs and pictures The Catcher in the Rye and Impulse play out and compliment each other through similarities. In slide one, Tony and Holden are compared through their anger and outburst after losing a loved one. Tony, a character in Impulse was dating an older man named Philip. Philip became very sick and passed away. The only way for Tony to feel better was to turn to pills. He was hospitalized for trying to overdose and was put into the psychiatric hospital. Holden goes through a struggle when his brother Allie dies. When Allie died, Holden broke all the windows in his garage and had to be hospitalized. Holden ends up regretting this because he was still hospitalized during Allie’s funeral and couldn’t attend it. While Philip was alive he sent Tony a baseball glove and a ball for his birthday. This compares to The Catcher in the Rye because Allie had a baseball glove and he would write poems in green ink all over the glove...

Knowing Your Audience

...Knowing your Audience and Communication release Eriberto Martinez BCOM/275 Jan 7, 2013 University of Phoenix Knowing Your Audience and Communication Release Overcoming a difficult situation is always satisfying, as a matter of fact we have to cope with difficulties almost everyday in places such as: work, school and at home etc. But every time we hear or watch on the news that somebody faced a mortal situation and got out of it alive, we find those stories of survival amazing, because it is always rewarding when people beat down an odd situation like this one. In august of 2010, I still remembered how the world followed the news of the 33 miners trapped underground in Chile for 69 days, it was at that time that I realized how the whole world only comes together to cooperate on tragedy events. Not matter, if you are American, Latino, African etc but when a natural disaster or a tragedy like that occurs the whole world comes together as one. When a tragedy like the one in Chile occurs the media has to be careful with the way that they inform. Why? Because there are many personal interests involved. On one side you have the business people who on this case are the owners of the mine and on the other side you have the families whose relatives are trapped “at a depth of around 300 meters.” (Weik, J).The owners of the business don’t want to be looked up as the evil people who are responsible for the tragedy and on the other side you have the family and all they want to hear...

Etch-a-Sketch Ethics

...Case Study 2: Etch A Sketch Ethics MGT 214 – Managerial Foundations 6/12/2013 1. Was it ethical of the Ohio Art Company to move production to China? What were the economic and social costs and benefits of this decision? What would have happened if production had not been moved? In my professional opinion, I believe the Ohio Art Company’s decision to move the production of their Etch-A-Sketch product to China was ethically sound. The Ohio Art Company was losing money while manufacturing in Bryan, Ohio. Even though outsourcing resulted in layoffs in Ohio, it also saved the jobs of many other employees by keeping the company profitable. Furthermore, even though outsourcing may result in lost jobs in the USA, it does provide employment for people in other countries. If the Ohio Art Company hadn’t moved production, it may have been forced out of business due to high manufacturing costs and immense pressure from distributors to keep prices low. 2. Assuming that the description of working conditions given in The New York Times article is correct, is it ethical for the Ohio Art Company to continue using Kin Ki to manufacture Etch-A-Sketch toys? Continuing to use Kin Ki would be highly unethical, assuming that the New York Times article is correct and that Kin Ki would not immediately resolve the issue. According to the case study, Kin Ki was misrepresenting numerous aspects of their operation. These aspects included wages, hours worked, work conditions, and living...

How Project Management Can Improve Service Delivery

...Contents Introduction 3 Service Delivery of Basic Education Curriculum Reform 4 Project management in Education Curriculum Reform 5 In Conclusion 6 Reference 7 Introduction Effective project management is the clear back bone to service delivery. Governments in the vastness of their administration requirements are often unable to maintain either everyday or random tasks of service delivery. This could be due to various reasons, such as; lack of communication, misunderstanding the chain of command, individuals or groups being appointed to complete such tasks that have insufficient knowledge and/or authority required for the fulfilment of such tasks etc. etc. Such shortfalls on tasks as vitally important to a country as service delivery can cripple Government infrastructure and create political unrest amongst unsatisfied citizens. When we are referring to ramifications of this extent, it is imperative that governments / organisations implement safety measures that cover and maintain the correct execution of service delivery. Project management is a clear and concise method that can be implemented simply and cost effectively, and integrate simply into existing infrastructure. Basically what Project Management boils down to, is a simplified process of getting the right person, with the required authority and capability to manage a need, and ensure the fulfilment of said need. So instead of having various groups, reporting to various authorities, with...

Even though I read information from this source I am not going to use this because it does not relate to my thesis. However, it does explain the significance of the cup referencing to corruption and the poisons that ruined many lives. Etch

...its production from Ohio to China. The Ohio Art Company was perhaps well known to be one of the top selling toys producing company of all time. In the 1990s, Etch-A-Sketch, the maker of the popular drawing board, was faced with a sluggish toy market and strong pressure to keep prices low. Consequently, the company made the unpopular decision to outsource production in December of 2000 to Kin Ki Industrial, a leading Chinese toy maker, laying off 100 U.S workers in the process. The closure of the company was expected by the employees but the thought of it moving was not emotionally easy since the company was the one holding the community together. The small Ohio town of Bryan where the manufacturing took place faced significant effects from the outsourcing. The population declined heavily and the tax base of Bryan, Ohio was severely eroded. Homes were also on auction and there were notices of foreclosures on the local paper. The rationale behind the decision for outsourcing was mainly cost saving. First and foremost the company wanted to lower their wages. Chinese factory workers made $75 per month compared to $1500 per month for U.S factory workers. On top of that, there were also low overhead costs for plants, maintenance, electricity and health benefits. All in all, they had to keep the cost of Etch-A-Sketch under $10 in order to compete with big retailers such as Walmart and Toy “R” Us. In December 2003, New York Times published a report stating that there were dismal pictures...

Engl 1301 Argumentation Essay

...Elizabeth Ramos ENGL 1301 Teresa Trevathan Dec. 12, 2014 Television’s Best Moments Television has provided many moments where audiences held their breaths, cheered out loud, got up and danced, or sat there and cried. From the appearance of Elvis on the Ed Sullivan Show to the question of “Who shot J.R.?” on Dallas, we have been riveted to the set, watching avidly and discussing what we had seen with others. One series, M*A*S*H, provided one of TV’s best moments with its final episode, titled “Goodbye, Farewell and Amen.” Though this particular episode featured many great moments, the best one would be when Hawkeye Pierce was talking to Dr. Sidney Freedman in a mental hospital. The doctor was trying to discover why Pierce had a mental breakdown, while Pierce was having difficulty in remembering what had happened. Pierce finally recalls that the bus he and others were riding had to pull over to the side of the road to hide from an enemy patrol. Hawkeye yells at a woman to keep her chicken from squawking, fearful that the enemy would find them, only to be stunned when the woman smothers her chicken while trying to keep it quiet. The audience is just as horrified as Hawkeye when he realizes the woman didn’t smother a chicken; she smothered her infant child. This finale episode aired in 1983, and it remained the most watched episode in the history of television until 2010. When looking at modern day programming, the AMC original show Breaking Bad has provided moments on...

He Rich Nations and the Poor Nations (1962)

...The Rich Nations and the Poor Nations (1962), which President Lyndon Johnson remarked "excites and inspires me" and Adlai Stevenson found "exceedingly important," was described in the New York Times Book Review by Eric F. Goldman as "wondrously lucid, richly informed and trenchantly argued, tough-minded but never failing to assume that intelligence and will can move human society forward." An enlightening book by Barbara Ward namely “The Rich Nation and The Poor Nation” talks about the differentiation of countries toward each other. The book has six (6) chapters: The Rich Nations, The Poor Nations, Communism Blue Print, The Economics of Development, The Politics of Development, and lastly Not by Bread Alone. Individually, it discusses topics that may help the low-economy country to rise like the others. Each chapter, although individually implied, relate their discussions to one another. We live in a most catastrophically revolutionary age that men have ever faced. Revolutions is not what we think about an event or series of interconnected event but it is ideas that changes our ways of life, the way we look things, changes everything out of recognition and changing it fast. The distinction between rich nations and poor nations is one of the great dominant political and international themes of our country. Underdeveloped is not the best way to describe the poor nations because some of them had been in the great civilization. Communism is a sort of resume of the revolutions...
