Mike marched into the room, wearing his white V-neck shirt - that reveals the scar on his chest, and pulled me up by my collar as I struggled to stay conscious. I could see black dots start clouding my vision. I stayed silent knowing that if I told him he’ll just double the punishment. He brought a lighted match close to my ear.
“This is for not listening to what I say,” he stated cruelly leaving the match to do its duty – I was too weak to do anything about it.
Sweat trickled down my forehead and my palms started to swear, I tried rubbing my hands on my pajama to dry them but I found no use in doing so because they just kept on sweating more and more.
When will this be over?
Sometimes in life the only thing you could do is to pray for god and hold on hope’s rope- and this was one of the times.
Dizziness .I felt it. Rapidly I took a seat on the floor of the dusty basement.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Mike raised his eyebrow in curiosity.
I looked up at him slightly and whispered under my breath as I breathed heavily, “Please, only this time.”
He just glared at me and took out another match. I watched as fire danced on the match stick. Then I closed my eyes shut.
When will this end?
The heat could be felt coming near my bruised cheek. Closer. Closer. Closer it came. The flame captured my skin – a predator attacking his prey.
5 minutes turned to 10, 2 matches turned to 3; 10 minutes turned to 15, 3 matches turned to 4; 15 minutes turned to 10, 4 matches turned to 5 – as I waited for this dreadful nightmare to end.
Is this going to be my life forever?
I hope not.
I felt tired. I felt light headed. I felt dizzy. I felt weak. I couldn’t move a single muscle.
Lying there I tried so hard to comprehend what had happened, it was pretty normal to me but defiantly not to any other typical teenage girl.
As my eyelashes hit my under eye bags, great memories flooded back.
My mother was cooking my favorite meal, country fried chicken alongside mashed potato, for my 9th birthday.
“Mommy!” I exclaimed
“Yes, honey?”
“Can I have pizza for dinner?” I pleaded giving her my best puppy dog eyes.
She sighed, “Fine, only because it’s your birthday and I don’t want to sadden you.”
“Thank you momzie! You’re the best person in the whole wide world!” I draw a large circle in the air exaggerating.
She rolled her eyes while she watched me run towards the pool in full speed. Accidently I slipped on a puddle of water and landed on my butt. So, daddy being the caring dad he is , jumped out of the pool as fast as a cheetah – well not exactly because he tripped. A stream of blood came rushing down my daddy’s chest .

That is how my day dream ended before blackness took over my vision and I slid to unconsciousness.

An embankment at the rear of a residence, 2.5m high is to be constructed. The existing soil profile in the area consists of a thick layer of soft clay with a shallow depth to groundwater, over dense sand less than 10 metres in depth. Explain the nature of the problems with embankment construction that maybe expected on this site, and discuss at least three engineering techniques by which the embankment construction and/or performance of the foundation soils can be improved. For the same site and proposed construction, explain how earth retaining systems can be used to limit the embankment side slopes from encroaching onto neighbouring property. Electro-Osmotic Pulse Technology

...Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 General Groundwater intrusion through a building's foundation can cause serious damage. In addition to increased concrete deterioration and accelerated rebar corrosion, basement dampness can ruin expensive electrical and mechanical equipments, which are often located in basement space; can increase maintenance requirements through frequent repainting or cleaning to combat mould growth; and can make affected areas uninhabitable or even unusable due to poor air quality. In selective problem areas, the usual approach to the treatment of water intrusion problems is to 'trench and drain', in other words, to excavate and expose the wall area and the base of the foundation, to replace waterproofing on the wall surface, and to install a drain tile system around the building or affected area. Other areas, such as floors, are untreatable using conventional methods. Electro-osmotic pulse (EOP) technology offers an alternative solution that can mitigate some water-related problems from the interior of affected areas without the cost of excavation. Further, by lessening water seepage through concrete walls and floors, indoor humidity is reduced, thereby alleviating corrosion damage to mechanical equipment, lessening mould problems, and enhancing indoor air quality. 1.2 Electro-Osmotic Flow If ions of one sign are preferentially adsorbed at a solid solution interface, a net charge or electric potential difference develops across the interface. This...

Romanesque vs Gothic Architectural Style

...Large numbers of people moved from one monastery to another creating travel routes which would later become trade routes. Because of this large influx of people, churches were built large enough to hold hundreds of people. Romanesque architecture style was one of the first to build entirely with stone materials instead of wood because stone was the only thing that would support the heavy roofs. The 2 structure was massive, boxy and low to the ground. Round Roman arches, thick walls, and small windows are typical of the buildings. All Romanesque architecture was built to make a statement of power and wealth. Romanesque buildings were not just churches, abbeys, and monasteries; they also encapsulated the castles. These castles were used as power sources and were built to be sturdy and long lasting during times of war. This meant that buildings were serviceable, durable, defensive, and strong, but not very creative. The Gothic style grew out of the Romanesque architectural style, when both prosperity and peace allowed for several centuries of cultural development and great building schemes. Gothic style architecture included grand cathedrals which had tall skyscraper-like towers. This design was deliberate, a way to get people to look up to the sky and think of God. Gothic structures emphasize the vertical and represented faith, dedication, and cooperation. Gothic style has three main...

Feed-Forward Control Applied to Thermally Activated Building Systems

...UNIVERSITÀ DEGLI STUDI DI PADOVA Facoltà di Ingegneria Dipartimento di Fisica Tecnica Tesi di laurea FEED-FORWARD CONTROL APPLIED TO THERMALLY ACTIVATED CONCRETE SLABS – A CASE STUDY Relatore: Correlatori: Prof. Ing. Roberto ZECCHIN Dott. Ing. Michele DE CARLI Dott. Ing. Dietrich SCHMIDT Laureando: Alessio PULLIERO Anno accademico 2003-2004 To my parents …. ABSTRACT The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate different control strategies for the heating and cooling system of the ZUB (Centre for Sustainable Building), situated in Kassel, Germany. It is an experimental office building, with a very detailed monitoring system for studying low-energy and low-exergy building technologies. The conditioning system is a TABS (Thermally Activated Building System), with water pipes embedded in the centre of a structural concrete slab, thus resulting in a ceiling radiant system. The high thermal capacity of the slab offers great opportunities to store heat, to dampen temperature fluctuations or to shift the peak-load; but, on the other hand, it implies a slow response of the system, which requires an accurate regulation strategy to front the variability of several factors, and to achieve the desired indoor temperature. A TRNSYS model of an office room has been developed, thus allowing to implement several regulations in the software and to test their performance. The main conclusion, carried out from the simulations, is that the implementation of a Feed-forward...

...Preface C++ 3e.fm Page iii Monday, July 16, 2001 1:44 PM PREFACE Welcome to the third edition of Data Abstraction and Problem Solving with C++: Walls and Mirrors. Since the publication of the second edition, we all have gained experience with teaching data abstraction in an objectoriented way using C++. This edition reflects that experience and the evolution that C++ has taken. This book is based on the original Intermediate Problem Solving and Data Structures: Walls and Mirrors by Paul Helman and Robert Veroff (© 1986 by The Benjamin/Cummings Publishing Company, Inc.). This work builds on their organizational framework and overall perspective and includes technical and textual content, examples, figures, and exercises derived from the original work. Professors Helman and Veroff introduced two powerful analogies, walls and mirrors, that have made it easier for us to teach—and to learn—computer science. With its focus on data abstraction and other problem-solving tools, this book is designed for a second course in computer science. In recognition of the dynamic nature of the discipline and the great diversity in undergraduate computer science curricula, this book includes comprehensive coverage of enough topics to make it appropriate for other courses as well. For example, you can use this book in courses such as introductory data structures or advanced programming and problem solving. The goal remains to give students a superior foundation in data abstraction...
