Bulb
A mercury thermometer takes advantage of liquids' expansion when the temperature increases. The bulb is the lowest part of the thermometer, which has a spherical shape. This section of the thermometer acts as a reservoir to hold the mercury. If the temperature is sufficiently high, the mercury travels up the capillary.
Capillary
The capillary of a mercury thermometer is the long cylindrical tube that is connected to the bulb. As temperature increases, mercury flows up the capillary. The further the mercury moves up the capillary, the higher the measured temperature. The capillary ends in a section known as the expansion chamber.
Expansion Chamber
The expansion chamber of a mercury thermometer can be found at the top of the capillary. The function of the expansion chamber is to form a larger volume through which the mercury can fill if the maximum temperature scale is exceeded. It is undesirable for mercury to reach the expansion chamber since it means the thermometer is no longer sensitive to increases in temperature.
Scale
The scale is the series of lines that are etched into an area to the side of the capillary. The scale allows the temperature to be read off in units of degrees. The type of degree unit depends upon the specific thermometer. Two commonly used temperature scales, are degrees Celsius and degrees Fahrenheit, which are found on everyday thermometers. An alternative scale that measures temperature in degrees Kelvin is often used by scientists and engineers.
The Bulb
A swelling, or bulb, at the bottom of the thermometer stores the mercury used in calculating temperature readings. As temperatures increase, mercury moves out of the bulb’s reservoir. As temperatures decrease, the mercury has some place to go as it recedes back into the bulb. The bulb is typically made of glass, but some thermometers may have bulbs made of stainless steel

...In today's homes people are worried on the economy and what expenses are being used. Compact fluorescent light bulbs are often mentioned as one of the easiest ways to shrink your power bill. The compact size of these CFLs allows them to fit into many existing incandescent light fixtures, including table and floor lamps commonly found in households. They present the quintessential green-green situation: saving money and helping the environment. There's the higher retail price. CFLs also have a very long lifespan, typically 6000- 15,000 hours compared to the 750-1,000 hours for a normal incandescent bulb. But the CFL can last up to 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs, meaning you'd have to buy 10 of them during a single $3.00 CFL's lifespan. Each CFL saves about $30.00 during its tenure, according to the U.S. Energy Star program, and pays for itself in about six months. One of the most potent threats to CFLs' superiority isn't their cost, but their contents. It is the use of this small amount of mercury that allows any fluorescent lamp to produce visible illumination at much higher efficiency levels than incandescent lighting.
