Bullying Report
Good morning. This is a very important meeting that is directed to the school counselors. I will describe bullying and its behavior on adolescent. I’ll also explain why bullying is an issue that needs to be addressed.
First, let me discuss what exactly is bullying: Bullying is when a person attempt to take control over another person with an attempt to make person feels helpless. Bullying involves exploitation and injustice on the person that is being bullied. Bullying can be physical, mentally, emotionally and verbally.
According to the bullying statistics 2010, it reveals that bullying is a crime that is not going away anytime soon. There are about 160,000 children that miss school every day out of fear of being bullied. Bullying statistics 2010 also report an increase in cyber bullying activities.
Signs of bullying victims are; adolescent appears moody, afraid of attending school and school activities, loneliness, sadness, depression. Bullying can occurs up to adulthood and can cause lead to suicide. Bullying can be physical, mentally, emotionally and verbally. Verbal bullying is the when a person is called names and is taunted with abusive words. Physical bullying hitting and doing physical damage to the adolescent. Bullying also includes, but not limited to shoving, pushing, and also teasing in a discriminative way. To spread lies and gossips, encouraging others to gang up on a person. Cyber bullying happens when adolescents are bullied through text messages or the internet. Exposing mean messages or pictures regarding a person in a website or blog, or spreading gossips and rumors across the internet. Sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter made these forms of bullying more easily because it can be done from the phone or computer.
Bullying is an issue to study in human development because bullying influences a person’s confidence and alters how they see themselves and look at life. According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development “Bullying can lead to physical injury, social problems, emotional problems, and even death. Children and adolescents who are bullied are at increased risk for mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, headaches, and problems adjusting to school. Bullying also can cause long-term damage to self-esteem.” The adolescent that is being bullied might distant him/herself from social relationships in feared of being bullied again. They also would desire to be at home more rather than going out. Children handle bullying in various methods; some children may overeat and gain more weight. Food can be a friend for them which can result in serious eating disorder. In other cases abuse adolescent might turn their attitudes into anger, by trying to kill the person that abused them or turned into a cold blooded killer, killing random people. According to STOPbullying.GOV. Ways to prevent bullying are; Make sure the student and staff understand the school’s zero-tolerance position on bullying. The school should properly communicate the values that everyone intends to follow – compassing, kindness, empathy, and honor. The adolescent that is being bullied should also learn how to prevent bullying themselves, and how to deal with the bullying whenever it arises. The main rule is: don’t escalate the situation. Responding in any way – aggressively or defensively – could embolden the bully to attack more, as it is the reaction that the bully seeks. Seminars and other programs can be held to equip all students with the skills they need to ignore, identify, and eliminate bullying.”
Research shows that school administrators, such as principals, can play a powerful role in bullying prevention. They can inspire others and maintain a climate of respect and inclusion. But a principal cannot do it alone. When parents and youth are involved in the solutions: Students feel safer and can focus on learning. Parents don’t have to worry that much and teachers and staff can focus on their work. Schools can develop a better technique to work with bullying because students are more likely to see or hear about bullying than adults. Parents can support schools’ messages about bullying at home. They are also more likely to recognize signs that a child has been bullied or is bullying others. The parents can teach their children ways to prevent or engage in bullying. Parents can also monitor their children’s’ activities on social media
