The podcast interview with Chris Barnes discusses the benefits of backing up behavior, effectiveness of backing up behavior, and how harmful backing up behavior can be. Backing up behavior is when a coworker helps another if they are behind with their job duties. He explained that we often look at helping another coworker as a good thing on the receiving end, when most of the time it is not only harmful to the person receiving help, but the person giving it also (Barnes, 2008).
Chris Barnes found that backing up coworkers could be helpful depending on the amount of work each person has and if the work is evenly distributed (Barnes, 2008). If work is evenly distributed, we have to be aware that no one person has a greater need to receive help from others than the next person (Barnes, 2008). Helping coworkers who have the same amount of work as everyone else, takes from the worker that’s helping, leaving their work idle, which in return puts them at risk of falling behind on their own task. He also explained that backing up behavior is harmful because it will enable some workers to slack on the job they are expected to do (Barnes, 2008). In a study that Chris Barnes conducted he found the longer-term costs of backing up behavior was that individuals receiving back up for a period of time did less work (Barnes, 2008). They formed a habit of doing less work and leaned on the other team members, which made them dependent on back up. He also found that backing up behavior could be helpful. Chris Barnes stated that it is helpful when the team member receiving the back up has a heavier workload and if the backing up comes from a team member that has a lighter workload (Barnes, 2008).
