Describe the role of business in the economy.
To understand fully the role that business plays in today’s economy we first have to understand the word business. Business according to Business Dictionary, (2011): Business is
An economic system in which goods and services are exchanged for one another or money on the basis of their perceived worth. Every business requires some form of investment and a sufficient number of customers are to whom its output can be sold at profit on a consistent basis. The foundation of a healthy community is a sustainable and diverse economy that is able to generate wealth for community members, businesses, and all those who interact within the community. That wealth provides income-earning opportunities for members, contributes to the quality of life, makes the community an attractive place to live and reduces poverty and crime - thereby achieving the vision of a healthy community. Economic drivers are "new wealth generators" or businesses that bring new and sustainable wealth into the community by providing goods and services to customers outside of the local area. Examples of economic drivers include tourism and export-oriented businesses that sell regionally or internationally. According to Edmiston, (2011): The wealth from these economic drivers increases the money available in the community and is shared with: * Other businesses (through local purchasing and the strengthened spending capacity of residents) * Residents (through wages and job creation and their associated positive social impacts) * Organizations responsible for providing local services and amenities
These are some of the roles that businesses play in our economy today and how businesses contribute to our communities and the well being of our economy.
Compare and contrast the roles of for-profit and nonprofit organizations in the economy. When starting a business its main objective or primary goal is to be financially beneficial to its owners and/or shareholders. Profit is paramount and the business is required to pay taxes on the profit that it makes. According to Kylander & Stone, 2012: When a business is started for profit and it goes out of business, its assets can and must be liquidated and the proceeds distributed to the owners or to the shareholders. On the other hand nonprofit organizations are just the opposite of the for-profit organization. Most people believe that the nonprofit organizations don’t make any money, but this is totally a misconception; in fact nonprofit organizations must make a profit and try to make surplus profit to pay the bills and help other charitable organizations. Contrary to what people may believe nonprofit organizations are not owned by any one individual, nor are they controlled by any one individual they are owned by the public for the good of all that are in need. Nonprofit organizations are exempt from taxes, but are required to file annual information returns for the federal and state government. Should a nonprofit organization go out of business their assets are to be liquidated after debts and liabilities have been satisfied and the remainder must be given to another nonprofit organizations.
Discuss the impact of current fiscal and monetary policy on the economy.
Fiscal and monetary policy both play a very important part of how our economy fluctuates up or down by the decisions that the government makes. Fiscal policy according to Investopedia, (2009): Fiscal policy is the means by which a government adjusts its levels of spending in order to monitor and influence a nation's economy. Kelly & McGowan, (2012) further state that fiscal policy does the following to boost the economy: * Lower taxes to boost economy by leaving money in peoples pocket for them to spend or invest. * Government spending EX: on road repair or building schools helps creates jobs. * Long term effects by investing in critical public assets EX: national renewable energy grid.
These are some of the ways that the government uses fiscal policy to alleviate pressure on our economy. Monetary Policy according to Investopedia, (2011) The actions of a central bank, currency board or other regulatory committee that determine the size and rate of growth of the money supply, which in turn affects interest rates. Monetary policy is maintained through actions such as increasing the interest rate, or changing the amount of money banks need to keep in the vault (bank reserves). The Federal Government has taken on several actions this time to try and boost the economy back to health. According to Kelly & McGowan, (2012) the government was responsible for several major acts such as: * For the first time in its history, the Federal government took an activist role with the bail out and propping up of staggering financial firms. * Banking services for member banks and the Federal Government * The monetary policy core purpose is to influence the size of the money supply.
These are some of the ways that monetary policy affects our economy to get it up and running.
Select a product or service with which you are familiar and outline a strategy for accessing global markets. Hospitality is the service I chose, because hospitality is need all over the world. People have to go to different countries whether it’s for school, business or pleasure hospitality is something that’s much needed. Take for instance Bill Marriott; he has hotels all over the world. Building his own hotels and employing people from where ever he decides to build. Outsourcing to foreign contractors and suppliers to supply the building materials, the supplies needed to run the hotel as well as the labor are a definite way to cut cost, but still give premium service.
One other thing that I feel like is very much needed is being able to speak to the people from other countries and communicate on a level that will be beneficial to us all. These are the things that I believe will be beneficial in getting a product or service to be successful globally. Alone with continuous good customer service hospitality will always be number one.
Select an organization with which you are familiar and discuss the impact of that organization’s level of social responsibility on a stakeholder group of your choice. Wal-Mart would have to be my choice of organization for several reasons: * Wal Mart is globally conscious of saving the environment * Wal-Mart made a conscious effort to become green * Wall Mart gives back to the community by donating to toys for tots annually. * Wal mart sponsors United way charitable organization * Wal-Mart contributes to St Jude Hospital annually * Wal mart gives scholarships to deserving students going off to college * Walmart fully supports the back to school drive.
As far as the responsibility to the stakeholder Wal-Mart offers 401K, stocks and bonds .Wal-Mart does a lot to support the community and charitable organizations. Wal-Mart is definitely one of the better companies to work for, get support from and a real team player.

...One of the first decisions that you will have to make as a business owner is to determine how the company should be structured. Therefore, your initial choices would be to decide on what organizational form your business will have. The three types of ownership for a business are sole proprietorship, partnership and corporation. As a Sole Proprietor you are the business owner. You are the only person who owns your business and in total control of the operations of your business. A sole proprietor has no legal findings and is not required by the Internal Revenue Service to submit budgets or annual reports for record keeping. A Limited Liability Company or partnership is when owners are called members and have limited personal liability for any debts or actions that may take in the LLC. The business is owned by more than one person and may include individuals, corporations, or other LLCs that have a more flexible and benefit through taxation. A Corporation has shareholders and is separate from their owners. Corporations are formed by submitting Articles of Incorporation to the state in which they may be doing the business. Corporations are also taxed separately from their owners at the corporate tax rate and the debts and liabilities are also separate from the owners. Although all of the partnerships are essential to any business, there are pros and cons of how each are handled on a day- to- day operation of a business. For that reason, as a business...

Business plays a large role in the economy, without business there would be no economy. Economy is defined as “a financial and social system of how resources flow through society, from production, to distribution, to consumption” ( McGowan, 2012, pg 17). By definition business is “any activity that provides goods and services in an effort to earn a profit” (McGowan, 2012, pg 3).Those profits allow businesses to innovate or offer more goods and services, which will consequently result in improving people’s lives. Businesses also play a significant role in the economy by creating wealth, employment and private enterprise. Businesses build wealth that gets redistributed throughout an economy, if businesses start to fail so will the economy that they are in. “The Factors of production is an economic term to describe the inputs that are used in the production of goods or services in the attempt to make an economic profit. The factors of production include land, labor, capital and entrepreneurship.” (Investopedia.com, definition) All four factors of production are important to the production of goods. Natural recourses, or land, provide the raw materials that make up the goods. Human resources, or Labor, do the hands-on work. Capital refers to the tools that make the job easier. ...1. Production and manufacturing both are process to converting inputs into outputs by applying some operation or process. Both terms are used interchangeably, yet both are different. Difference is the raw material procurement. When raw materials are not procured from outside, the company owns it, after processing operations produce goods/service, then the process is called Production. While maufacturing also includes Design sales marketing, and is a narrow term. Whereas production is a broader term. 2. While mass production is effective for creating large quantities of one item, flexible production is usually more cost-effective for producing smaller runs. Whereas customer-driven production system evaluates customers demands in order to make the connection between products manufactured and products bought. 3. The Analytic production system reduces a raw material to its component parts in order to extract one or more marketable products. The part of production that physically or chemically changes materials. For Ex: Petroleum refining breaks down crude oil into several marketable products, including gasoline, heating oil, and aviation fuel. Synthetic production system is the reverse of an analytic system. It combines a number of raw materials to produce finished products. The part of production process that puts together components. For Ex: Canon’s assembly line produces a camera by assembling various parts such as a shutter or a lens cap. 4. Business sustainability requires...

Classical Argument: Earthquakes

...Adrian Howley Classical Argument Reporting earthquakes are very critical to studying the behavior of tectonic plates. The very first recorded earthquake occurred in the year 1831 B.C. and is currently known today as the 526 Antioch Earthquake. The area affected was Antioch, China (located between the Syria and Turkey regions). Not much is known about how the report was formed. However, this historic report did include information about how the aftershocks lasted for twelve months. Other details from this report indicate that the death toll is around 250,000 to 300,000 casualties. Scientists today can only prove that the earthquake occurred between May 20 and May 29 (date translated from B.C. to Calendar Year). The first instrument to measure the seismic waves of earthquakes was invented by Charles F. Richter at the California Institute of Technology. (Bellis, 2013) He introduced his new instrument called the Richter scale, to the world of science. His invention allows scientists today to study the mechanics behind earthquakes and locate the epicenter to which the natural disaster originated. The largest earthquake recorded by the Richter scale was measured on May 22, 1960 at a magnitude of 9.5. The quake resulted in 1,886 deaths, 2,000,000 homeless, and $1,175,000,000 total in damages. (“The Largest Earthquake”, [PDF file]) If we want to see these large numbers slide down to zero, the impossible will need to be challenged by science. Skyscrapers are buildings consisting...

This improvement is especially apparent in the world of architecture and civil engineering, where there has been an unremitting ambition to surpass the existing boundaries, particularly with regards to height. The most renowned early example of a structure where height was key are the Pyramids of Giza where elevation was crucial in order to radiate power and divine authority. The tallest pyramid, standing at 146.5m, was built more than 4500 years ago, and remained the tallest manmade structure for the next 3800 years, until the 1300s when Lincoln Cathedral was built topping it by only 13.5m [1][2]...

...Quality Management a Competitive Advantage in a Global Market Total Quality Management (TQM), Six Sigma, and International Standards Organization (ISO), are three of the processes or tools organizations need to compete and give them a competitive advantage in the global market of today and that will allow them to keep up with the ever changing World market in the future. Total Quality Management (TQM) is a philosophy that says that uniform commitment to quality in all areas of an organization promotes an organizational culture that meets consumers' perceptions of quality. The concept of TQM rests largely on five principles: • Produce quality work the first time. • Focus on the customer. • Have a strategic approach to improvement. • Improve continuously. • Encourage mutual respect and teamwork. To be effective in improving quality, TQM must be supported at all levels of an organization, from the highest executive to the lowest-level hourly employee. TQM extends the definition of quality to all functional areas of the organization, including production, marketing, finance, and information systems. The process begins by listening to customers' wants and needs and then delivering goods and services that fulfill these desires. TQM even expands the definition of customer to include any person inside or outside the company to whom an employee passes his or her work. In an assembly plant, for example, the warehouse supplies its customer, which is the line operator of...

What Are the Key Aspects in the Construction and Design of the Burj Dubai Tower?

...structure. The Burj Dubai, situated in Dubai, will soon be the tallest building in the world, bypassing the previous record holder, the Taipei 101 by almost 290 metres giving it an astonishing 800 metre height. With over 2700 feet, designing and constructing such a vast building has given significant challenges to engineers and designers alike. Since the building can hold up to 35,000 people at once, it is essential that it is strong, comfortable and able to move people up and down it at a steady rate. This essay will explore how the designers and engineers went about solving these issues. One of the key problems the engineers had to overcome was effect of the wind load and how it would affect the building motions due to the extraordinary height of the tower. Wind load is something that must be taken into account for all buildings, but obviously the wind velocity increases the higher you go and since the structure is over 800 metres tall, there is guaranteed to be a large wind force acting on the building. Three different engineering firms: Skidmore, Owings and Merrill who were all working on the project, hired the RWDI (Rowan Williams Davies & Irwin Inc.) a wind and environmental engineering firm to conduct wind studies on the Burj Dubai’s design. The RWDI had worked on a number of previous projects such as the Petronas Towers and the Taipei 101 and its facilities included four boundary wind tunnels. Their job was to minimize the effects of the wind load and building motion of the...

My Journal Entry 1

...Entry 1 (24th September 2012) It's exactly 12:01 am now, and seeing that this is my first entry, I should update a little of myself. I'm currently at Taiwan for a short vacation with my high school friends of about 10years. And they are Lee Sue Ee, Soh Pei Ling, and Chong Yee Wun. We arrived here on Saturday, 22nd September 2012, and so far it has been an hectic journey seeing that we are here on our own for the first time and we did not go through any travel agency. Enough of updating, I just finish my STA assessment and e-mailed it to my group mates to submit later in the morning. I just hope that I did good enough despite my heavy schedule and with little initiative. Oh yes, I am now in my room while the girls are sleeping and the view is just amazingly breath-taking. How fortunate i am that I could do my assignment while looking at this sea view. The sound of the rushing waves eases my mind to relaxation and light music as my background to suit my emotion. The only thing that lack, is a partner to share this spectacular moment. Anyway, I should sleep now. Gotta be up early later for another tour around the north-east Taiwan before heading to the capital city Taipei later in the evening. I will update my entry again later whilst exploring every possibility here. Good Night ! Good afternoon, it was quite a day after waking up restlessly. Breakfast here was amazing, I mean, what more can we ask with such nature phenomenal as our spectacular view. After finishing our...

Seven Wonders of 21st Century Architecture

...Seven Wonders of 21st Century Architecture You may not be able to name them all, but most people have at least heard of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. Here’s a list with links: Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Temple of Artemis, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria . Of the seven, only the Pyramid remains, the rest we know of only through historic documents.[1] There have been other “7 Wonders” lists and in 2007, the Swiss government sponsored a project to create a new list, with selections made by popular vote. Over 100 million votes were cast, and the new 7 Wonders were announced as follows: Chichen Itza (the Yucatan, Mexico pyramid), Christ the Redeemer (Brazil’s enormous statue of Jesus), Colosseum (Rome’s arena of Gladiators),Great Wall of China (you can see it from space!),Machu Picchu (ancient city built on an unbelievably high mountain top in Peru),Petra (Jordan’s city cut directly into the side of a stone mountain ),and the Taj Mahal (India’s majestic temple/mausoleum).[2] But my final Cyber Journey of the semester started not as a stroll through history, but as a trip into the future of arts and Architecture with a look at another “7 Wonders” list – The 7 New Wonders of the 21st Century [3], as selected by Architecture, an online review published by the website Quazen.
