Week 5 Discussion

Examine the four (4) managerial functions and determine which one (1) you believe to be the most important. Provide two (2) examples to support your choice. Suggest one (1) action you will take in order to implement your choice into your current or future role.
According to Boone and Kurtz (2013), planning is the process of anticipating future events and conditions and determining courses of actions for achieving organizational objectives. This because a business begins with vision. As such, I assert that this is the most important managerial function. The planning function of management controls all the planning that allows the organization to run smoothly. Planning involves defining a goal and determining the most effective course of action needed to reach that goal (Boone and Kurtz, 2013). Typically, planning involves flexibility, as the planner must coordinate with all levels of management and leadership in the organization. Planning also involves knowledge of the company’s resources and the future objectives of the business.
In my current professional role, which I prefer to remain anonymous due the sensitivity of my work, planning and preparation are paramount when having to be organized and deal with large numbers of people. One action that I will implement is improved planning for contingency events. It is my belief that having back-up plans will serve to sure up all other managerial functions.

MacKay, and Janice Ristock University of Manitoba The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of stress among both female and male managers, using a series of single-sex and mixed focus groups. In addition to substantial similarities between female and male participants’ descriptions about their experiences of stress (e.g., negative and positive aspects of stress, different levels of stress, lack of sleep, pressure, financial stressors, being a manager), a number of important gender differences emerged from their descriptions. These differences can be explained by the way in which gender continues to be socially constructed in society; specifically, there are differing gender role expectations and responsibilities for women and men. Female managers experienced “emotional stress,” primarily because of the pressure to meet expectations of being responsible and caring for people both inside and outside of their home. In contrast, male managers tended to focus on themselves and regard other things as beyond their control or responsibility.
