Gallatin Carpet Cleaning is a small, family-owned business operating out of Bozeman, Montana. For its services, the company has always charged a flat fee per hundred square feet of carpet cleaned. The current fee is $28 per hundred square feet. However, there is some question about whether the company is actually making any money on jobs for some customers-particularly those located on remote ranches that require considerable travel time. The owner’s daughter, home for the summer from college, has suggested investigating this question using activity-based costing. After some discussion, a simple system consisting of four activity cost pools seemed to be adequate. The activity cost pools and their activity measures appear below: Activity Cost Pool | Activity Measure | Activity for the Year | Cleaning carpets | Square feet cleaned (00s) | 20,000 hundred | | | square feet | Travel to jobs | Miles driven | 60,000 miles | Job support | Number of jobs | 2,000 jobs | Other (costs of idle capacity and organization-sustaining costs) | None | Not applicable |
The total cost of operating the company for the year is $430,000, which includes the following costs: Wages | $ 150,000 | Cleaning supplies | 40,000 | Cleaning equipment depreciation | 20,000 | Vehicle expenses | 80,000 | Office expenses | 60,000 | President’s compensation | 80,000 | | $ 430,000 |
Resource consumption is distributed across the activities as follows: Distribution of Resource Consumption Across Activities | | | Cleaning | Travel to | Job | | | | Carpets | Jobs | Support | Other | Total | Wages | 70% | 20% | 0% | 10% | 100% |…...

...Week 3 DQ 1: In my attempt to search for academic honest in higher learning using search engines, little was found.  When I first said searching, I decided to use google.com and ask.com as my search engines.  I decided to look for academic honesty in higher learning (in its entirety).  I had more luck with my findings when I used google.com than when I used ask.com.  I picked a few websites that sounded like they'd be useful when writing a paper on the topic.  The first two that I chose to visit were findarticles.com and wiki.answers.com.  Wiki.answers.com literally gave a one sentence definition of what is believed to be academic dishonesty.  Findarticles.com gave a short and simple description on academic dishonesty in online courses and provided a few links to articles about academic dishonesty.  Those articles gave very little information on plagiarism and other terms defining academic dishonesty.  One of the articles only informed a person about using correct citations in a paper and it was only six to eight sentences long.  As with google.com, ask.com provided many links to many different colleges and academic institutions.  I'm looking for academic integrity, not links to colleges, or links to different colleges' guidelines on their ideas on academic integrity (although they could somewhat prove to be useful).  One thing that I was hoping for were statistics (real case studies) on academic dishonesty in higher learning.  I did a search using ask.com for......

Bus 475 Week 3 Dq

...BUS 475/DQ Week 3 Question 1 What are the different strategies and what is different about them? The main strategies commonly referred to as Generic and Grand. Generic strategies are used by companies to gain ground in a competitive market. This type has subcategories, which are cost leadership, differentiation, and focus. Firms that elect to use generic strategies, may offer cheaper prices for the same service as their competitors. For instance, when purchases a plane ticket, they can go with Southwest Airlines, which is a no frills company and get a lower price. Southwest opts to omit the bells and whistles (unlike Virgin Air) to offer low prices and gain a competitive edge within the airline industry. Generic strategies can be used in all industries and on any product type. Whereas Grand strategies are elaborate and over the top and change the course of business, because their focus is long term. This type has subgroups, which are market growth, product development, turnaround, liquidation. Firms that focus on market growth, want a low risk strategy and will growing market interest on a product already being marketed. The opposite of market growth is product development, where firms focus on research and development. Pharmaceutical companies are heavily into research and development. Turnaround strategy is just what it is, firms whose product is performing poorly, will switch how they present their product to generate interest. Liquidation is a desperate......

Human Resource managers and line managers “have a responsibility to bring capable human assets into the organization who can perform the duties and responsibilities that will keep the organizational functional and competitive in the market” (Youssef, 2012). It is the responsibility of the Human Resource manager to provide the necessary guidance and advice to help the managers be successful in working with their employees. They must provide the training necessary in order for the managers to follow the proper procedures and guidelines in dealing with their employees. It is the managers responsibility to follow the policy and procedures in not only hiring the personnel that will fit their team, but to provide evaluations, coach, mentor, train, document, and provide the necessary assistance to help their employees be successful and productive. Managers must be able to motivate and attain trust in their employees. This is all part of Human Resources; working with the employees whether it is hiring, firing, documenting, evaluating, or providing the training and assistance necessary for the employees to do their jobs. Human Resource Management is there to assist the managers......

It is HRM’s responsibility to set out the organizational goals and strategies to each and every employee of the organization, but it is the responsibility of the HRM and line managers to work together to determine the needs of each of their departments. HR Planning and Strategic Planning should be integrated as one because in order to obtain the most valuable employees for the organization, HRM must strategically determine the needs in each department of the organization. There are six determining factors in the strategic HR planning process in order to “meet resource demands, examine and evaluate resource deployment, estimate capacity, and recognize and handle human talent” (Youssef, 2012). I also have had many of my own performance reports written and administered by my own supervisors. I am very familiar with the Air Force’s current performance rating systems and I understand where it plans to go. In the Air Force, every individual knows the exact date their performance report will be due and close out because they are all set up on an annual basis. At any time an Airman is free to go to their supervisor and ask for a feedback to know the status of their current performance. A good supervisor should give verbal feedback to their Airmen every day on how they are doing and also conduct a written mid-term feedback session about 6 months before their performance report closes out. Setting up a specific time and date for performance feedback helps prevent the first issue addressed in the article, “Too Vague” (Jackson, 2012). 2- Benefit offerings and salary offerings play a huge role in marketplace competitiveness. Ashford Bus 630 - Week 2

...Week 2 Assignment – Case 3A Levi Cushing BUS 630 Dr. Drakopoulou March 2, 2015 Auerbach Enterprises has recently got a new controller who is considering changing the which rate to use every year as the company previously used company-wide rate and the new controller would like to use departmental rates. Using a company-wide rate lumps all the products together in to one field, but breaking it out in departmental rates shows more detailed information of each product. Auerbach Enterprises is looking to see if one of their products is more affected by the use of departmental rates rather than a company-wide rate (Education Unlocked, 2014). Since AE has two main products that they deal with that are fairly similar it is good to compare how to two would look when it comes to the two different rate styles. If you examine the appendix you can see several different calculations that will be explained and comprised to see what would be the best solution for AE to take when it comes to which rate to choose for the upcoming year. Looking at Q1 we can determine that the department rate style is reliant on the number of machine hours and the overhead cost of the products by the department those products fall into. Radiator parts fabrication has the lowest overhead cost of the departments, but not the lowest overhead rate cost per hour. The lowest cost per hour is the compressor assembly and test department with a $4.00 overhead rate per hour cost. The highest costing......

The department’s cost control report is given below: “I just can’t understand all the red ink,” Weston complained to the supervisor of another department. “When the boss called me in, I thought he was going to give me a pat on the back because I know for a fact that my department worked more efficiently last month than it has ever worked before, instead, he tore me apart. I thought for a minute that it might be over the supplies that were stolen out of our warehouse last month. But they only amounted to a couple of hundred dollars, and just look at this report. Everything is unfavorable.” Direct labor wages and supplies are variable costs; supervision and depreciation are fixed costs; and maintenance and utilities are mixed costs. The fixed component of the budgeted maintenance cost is $92,000; the fixed component of the budgeted utilities cost is $11,700. John Fleming, chief administrator for Valley View Hospital, is concerned about the costs for tests in the hospital’s lab. Charges for lab tests are consistently higher at Valley View than at other hospitals and have resulted in many complaints. Also, because of strict regulations on amounts reimbursed for lab tests, payments received from insurance companies and governmental units have not been high enough to cover lab costs. Mr. Fleming has asked you to evaluate costs in the hospital’s lab for the past month. The following information is available: * Two types of tests are performed in the lab-blood tests and smears. During the past month, 1,800 blood tests and 2,400 smears were performed in the lab. Small glass plates are used in both types of tests. During the past month, the hospital purchased 12,000 plates at a cost of $28,200. This cost is net of a 6% quantity discount. 1,500 of these plates were unused at the end of the month; no plates were on hand at the beginning of the month. * During the past month, 1,150 hours of labor time were recorded in the lab at a cost of $13,800. * The lab’s variable overhead cost last month totaled $7,820. Valley View Hospital has never used standard costs. By searching......

Unfortunately, some of the actions taken by managers to make their performance look better may actually harm the organization. For example, suppose the marketing department is held responsible only for increasing the performance measure “total revenues,” Increases in total revenues may be achieved by working harder and smarter, but they can also usually be achieved by simply cutting prices. The increase in volume from cutting prices almost always results in greater total revenues; however, it does not always lead to greater total profits. Those who design performance measurement systems need to keep in mind that managers who are under pressure to perform may take actions to improve performance measures that have negative consequences elsewhere.  For each of the following situations, describe actions that managers might take to show improvement in the performance measure but which do not actually lead to improvement in the organization’s overall performance. * Concerned with the slow rate at which new products are brought to market, top management of a consumer electronics company introduces a new......

In eight years the equipment could be sold for about 10% of its original cost. * An investment of an additional $2,000 would be required to cover working capital needs for cleaning supplies, change funds, and so forth. After. eight years, this working capital would be released for investment elsewhere. * Both a wash and a vacuum service would be offered with a wash costing $2.00 and the vacuum costing $1.00 per use. * The only variable costs associated with the operation would be 20 cents per wash for water and 10 cents per use of the vacuum for electricity. * In addition to rent, monthly costs of operation would be: cleaning, $450; insurance, $75; and maintenance, $500. ...
