BUSINESS AND SOCIETY
INTRODUCTON
With increasing urgency, market and social forces are rewriting the roles and responsibilities of business as well as its strategies. Though the profit motive of business is understood and accepted, people do not accept it as an excuse for ignoring the basic norms, values, and standards of being a good citizen. Modern businesses are expected to be responsible towards the community resources working toward the growth and success of both their companies and their communities. Business ethics can be examined from various new perspectives, including the perspective of the employee, the commercial enterprise, and society as a whole. Very often, situations arise in which there is conflict between one or more of the parties, such that serving the interest of one party is a detriment to the other(s). For example, a particular outcome might be good for the employee, whereas, it would be bad for the company, society, or vice versa. Social responsibility of business ethics and consumer right are the influential aspects of the business and society relations. The social responsibility of businesses to the society’s interest and resource utilization is determinant to the business success. The Consumer right is the main components of the social responsibility of businesses in addition to other components needs special emphasis. The other general sector in business and society is the idea of consumerism and environmental movement, which is claim of collective right. Consumerism affects strategies of business in most powerful industries of the world. Businesses which follow this approach argue that it is not the duty of the business to be concerned about social welfare and indeed this may well detract from the primary means by which the company should be contributing to society; that is by operating in an efficient economic matter. ...going into. You will need to learn about the different laws and regulations, the different customer buying habits, and change your marketing strategies and materials to appeal to the new country you are entering. It is important to remember that the way you operate your business will be determined by culture of the market you are entering, not yours.  It is important to understand the differences between domestic and international business but they should not inhibit your interest or drive for success internationally. Rather they should whet your appetite for success.  Cultures No two cultures are the same and understanding both the social and business culture in another country is the first key to success. Culture defines everything a society does, from its business practices, to its response to advertising and marketing, to negotiating sales. It is important to include  research on the culture of the country(s) that you intend to sell to prior to entering their market. Understanding these, often sensitive, areas will mean that you are better prepared when first entering the market. Although the people that you will deal with will not expect you to be completely in tune with the culture, respect and politeness will go a long way.  Level of Competition The level of competition you will experience in foreign markets is likely to be more dynamic and complex than you experience in domestic markets.  A good strategic tool to use to determine if you are able to compete in a particular...

Should Csr Be Used as a Marketing Tool by Producers in the Cosmetics Industry?

...negatives in using CSR and promoting it using marketing depending on the consumers’ perceptions. It also finds that there exists an information asymmetry between producers and consumers in terms of CSR for their products. The paper supports previous ideas that CSR is useful in benefitting the company brand and value and that it can also be used to influence a consumer’s purchase decision of the cosmetics. INTRODUCTION In conceptual theory, CSR is how a company incorporates “social, environmental and economic issues into their values and business operations in a transparent and accountable manner” (FAITC, 2012). In simple terms, CSR is the actions that a company undertakes or doesn’t undertake during their business functions to benefit society and their stakeholders. There are many arguments for and against CSR and also differing views on whether it actually “pays” to undertake CSR. Friedman (1970) essentially argues that the only social responsibility that a business should undertake is to increase profits for the benefit of its shareholders and that CSR should be left to governing authorities that know best which social responsibilities to act upon. In contrast, Mintzberg (1983) argues that CSR is indeed important for corporations to undertake with...

Consensual Relationship Agreement

...Consensual Relationship Agreement Jessie Spell Strayer University BUS 520 Dr. Russell 07/22/2012 My paper pertains to Consensual Relationship Agreements within the workplace. I will start by defining consensual. Consensual means involving or based on mutual consent (Webster 2001). What is a Consensual Relationship Agreement? The legal name is “Love Contract”, it first surfaced eight years ago during Clintons’ Presidency. During the argument for the use of CRA’s in the workplace, I will explain the pro’s for the agreement. The use of CRA’s will help address unwanted situations that may occur such as harassment, sexual advances, favoritism, and bullying. With the CRA policy in place and enforced there will be less room for mistakes. When you have encountered an individual that attracts you within the workplace guidelines must take precedence. There should be boundaries set to protect both employees due to possible break-ups. Putting a CRA into effect not only provides guidelines for the individuals in a relationship but also for the company and other employees. Some employees may see the CRA as a tool to prevent a hostile work environment. The reality is people in the workplace sometimes get involved. You can’t always pick and choose where you will find your true love. There could be relationships that blossom and develop into a totally happy romance. The workplace is a prime example. When you have a lot of other responsibilities, the workplace maybe your only other...

Business Ethics

...Florida International University College of Business State Farm® Financial Literacy Lab http://www.business.fiu.edu/sffll 305-348-1542 Business Ethics 1 BUSINESS ETHICS An analysis of business ethics involves examining the principles and/or ethical problems that may arise a business environment context. Ethics in general is a philosophy that deals with values relating to people’s conduct when it comes to the rightness and wrongness of their actions, and the goodness and badness of the motives of such actions. This examination of people’s conduct is applied to business professionals conducting business activity when analyzing business ethics. Difference between “lawful” and “ethical” Many business professionals who are confronted with problems regarding their business activities will justify their decisions based on the legality of the ensuing actions. The fact that a particular action is legal might be enough for an individual to remove herself of any responsibility for negative consequences that might result. This leads to an incorrect thinking that because the legal systems allows it, unethical behavior cannot occur. “Lawful” does not always mean “ethical.” In 2006, Nike Inc. contracted with a supplier to make its soccer balls. The soccer balls were manufactured in Pakistan before they were sold to Nike, who would then market and sell the product worldwide. Many criticized Nike for its soccer balls being manufactured in Pakistan because child labor was being used...

Leading People in Organizations

...INDIVIDUAL LPO REPORT – PIRATE DEV When I started the LPO class at IE, one thing that clearly struck me was that how dependent are we to achieve our goals and vision. The IWWEG framework led me into thinking what I can do to achieve the visions that I have had since childhood. With this in my mind, I started working on a kind of a blueprint on my getting to that vision. Let me elaborate step by step. I – From the time I have come into existence in this physical dimension, my curiosity has been to understand why am I here? What did I come for? A long time was spent in understanding this existence. Did I come for just living and dying? Do I wake up everyday, have food, go to work, make money, make love, have kids, buy properties, become sick, and then die? Too depressive…this can’t be the reason for being here. There has to be something else. There has to be some purpose for which I have taken birth in this physical form. I now have realized that I would like to establish a co-operative mechanism, which would help people gain life skills that, would help them successful as leaders, husbands/wives, fathers/mothers, brothers/sisters etc. How do I achieve this? This leads to the next step. WE – Fortunately or unfortunately, we are dependent beings. Not just with other human beings but with everything around us. We need air to breather, the sun to give us life, water to drink, cows to give milk, animals to give us food. Every purpose in this world requires support from some...
